Fango has the update here. March-April 2007 should be a fun time as I gather there's a book of some sort coming out around then as well.

Gee, and I was asked to keep mum about all this till sometime in January! Well, it's true and I just approved the test disc a couple of days ago. I'll be writing a preview on my blog as time permits.

FYI, the audio commentary is a slightly edited (ie. corrected) version of the track I recorded for Image Entertainment in the summer of 2000. The featurette with Lamberto is fantastic, the best ever.

This is great news. I was just contemplating rewatching my VCI disc of KBK, since I'm going through a renewed interest in Bava, of late. I can wait a few extra months, though, for what I assume will be a version that's a little closer to definitive.

I wonder if the final TV movie that he and Lamberto did will ever show up on DVD. (What was it? VENUS OF ILLE?)

Is it sourced from the one Leone provided for some of the more recent foreign releases or have they found another element?

Tim Lucas - December 10, 2006 06:49 PM (GMT)
I believe the master was licensed from Germany; it's not Leone's master. It's properly framed and very colorful. I don't know if the transfer I saw was final or not.

Speaking of Bava releases, Tim, I remember reading in one of the VW columns that the HD showings of PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES had extra footage that was found only on the French disc which was recalled due to rights issues. Do you know if the English-language German anamorphic disc is this longer cut or just an anamorphic transfer of the MGM USA restoration?

Tim Lucas - December 12, 2006 02:26 AM (GMT)
The MGM "restoration" is a singular version, whose exact nature Glenn Erickson described in his article for VIDEO WATCHDOG #76. I believe all the imports are derived from the same camera negative element and include the extra material of the burial and Wes's death throes.

Do you know if it's a PAL-sourced transfer?

No, I don't -- and that's not the sort of question I should attempt to answer on the basis of a test disc.

I believe that there is a No Shame Italian R2 DVD release of Caltiki recently out but I don't have any info on quality/specs etc or whether this will be released in the UK or USA.

Another positive review over at DVD Talk. He wasn't totally thrilled with the sound quality, but the visuals made him a born-again KBK lover. Lots of praise for Tim's commentary as well.
