Title: ABC Movie of the Week
Description: Who composed the theme song?

Remember the intro to the ABC Movie of the Week?
How about the theme song? Was it composed by Burt Bacharach?
Marty McKee - November 6, 2006 10:48 PM (GMT)
There have, in fact, been several different Movie of the Week formats on ABC over the years, all with different themes. I know Harry Betts, Patrick Williams and Perry Botkin, Jr. composed some of them. I've never heard of Bacharach doing one, but I suppose it's possible. I guess it depends upon which theme you're referring to.

The "Movie of the Week" opening with the cool slit-scan animation (
"A World Premiere Motion Picture produced especially for ABC") featured a theme adapted by Harry Betts from parts of two Bacharach tunes - "Nikki" and "Are You There."
There's a quote from producer Harry Marks over at TV Party about the creation of the theme.

The subject line instantly made me flash on early era MST3K in which the bots were constantly chastised by Joel for going off on a "movie of the week" riff [usually inspired by some character in the movie being viewed shining a flashlight].
No wait. That was the "ABC Mystery Movie". I can't remember the "ABC Movie of the Week" theme. Is there an mp3 online somewhere?
Marty McKee - November 7, 2006 04:57 AM (GMT)
The famous NBC SUNDAY MYSTERY MOVIE theme with the whistle was composed by Henry Mancini.

That's the one - wow!
That was actually nicely done for the time - reminded me of 2001.
Plus I remember that movie SECOND CHANCE!

Michael Karol has written a helpful little guide to the ABC Movies of the Week, and I contributed to it.

*sigh*
A little bit of a flashback there. Used to be, that was the big movie experience for folks that didn't live anywhere near a theatre. Imagine that.
