Title: I axed for it!

Hey, how about a Basil Gogos coffee table book highlighting his horror film artwork from magazines like FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, CREEPY, MONSTERSCENE, etc?
There's a great book on Berni Wrightson called A LOOK BACK and Basil's work would shine in a book done in a similar style!
Anyone want to sign a petition?

Absolutely. I have a publication called Monsterscene that had a Gogos cover. Is he still alive?

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I think that Bud Plant carries a lithograph series of Gogos' monster paintings; I know that some of his men's magazine work appears in the Taschen book "Men's Adventure Magazines in Postwar America" along with great work from other noteable genre artists. I believe there was a recent gallery showing at La Luz De Jesus Gallery of original paintings featured in the book (none by Basil Gogos however) and there are links to purchase Gogos' original art from his own webpage.
Back in the eighties there were a series of hard cover books that were galleries of silver age comic book covers, and I think they did a book of Warren's magazine covers, but I don't have it and can't officially confirm its existence. I do have the Fawcette Golden age, and Marvel comic book volumes, and of course there are dozens of EC portfolios and reprint editions. If you don't mind viewing Basil's great works in B&W, you can pick up the Monster Magazine collectibles guide, which shows almost every cover of almost every genre fan publication including Famous Monsters Of Filmland.

Indeed, Basil is still alive. Check out his website at
http://basilgogos.com/He's also done some artwork for Zacherley comics and CD covers by the horror punk band The Misfits and (most noticeably) Rob Zombie. Basil still does signings at comic cons here and there. He's a wonderful artist and it'd be nice to have his work collected in one volume, uncluttered with magazine hyberbole.

If you are in the East Coast(NY/NJ/CT/PA)area, BASIL GOGOS appears at every CHILLER THEATRE EXPO...He is not listed on the website, as he has just become a permanent fixture of the show, having a booth at the show for about 6 years or longer now...If you even have enough money, you may even be able to commission him to do a work of art for you if he has the time. Besides that, he sells various prints of his work & his talent is superb as always...Next CHILLER is the first week of JAN. '05...

I just saw Basil again at the National Comic Book & Collectible Expo last month here in NYC. He had a wonderful collection of art for sale, much of it, he said, not even available on the website. So if you are a fan and able to catch him at a convention appearance, by all means do it. I agree that a coffee table book is long overdue - I have enough of the man's art on my walls, I would love to see the rest in my home in any form!
