Title: The new season of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Domenick Fraumeni - October 16, 2006 01:11 AM (GMT)
Anyone else watching this? This show can drive me nuts. It does so many things really good, and some things just drive me nuts.
At the end of the last season, I figured creator Ron Moore had to pull a rabbit out of his you-know-what in order to salvage things. Well, it looks like he is, but I'm still waiting....and waiting.
Talk about procrastination! A 2 hour premiere and another hour this week, and about 30 min. of action, as in the story moving forward, has taken place so far. I feel like I'm watching an extended version of a two hour movie. It's great to have character development, etc but at some point the story should actually move.
This is why I don't watch as much television as I used to. When television shows got into "arcs" in a big way, it meant just dragging out a story to the breaking point, instead of wrapping things up and moving on.
Don't get me wrong. I love the acting on this show, and there are some disturbing allegories to modern day events in the new season. But get on with it, already!

I imagine this Friday will be the big payoff. Things have been morose out there on New Caprica, but given the situation... :)

My Galactica patience is measured in LOST increments. As long as they get to the point quicker than LOST, I'm OK...
...but really hating the little Starbuck family drama.
The thing I like about EUREKA and DR. WHO is that they don't play the 24/LOST "every single second must be a nailbiter with no reslution or payoff" style that is getting way too prevalent. I sometimes forget how nice it can be to watch a show that is actually enjoyable and in which things are resolved even as other things are built up to throughout the whole of a season.
Still..."Lee Adama is fat now."
Domenick Fraumeni - October 17, 2006 06:20 PM (GMT)
DR. WHO never played most of the sick little games that televison loves to indulge in, nowadays. That's one of the reasons why I love it to this day :). WHO has been just lovely this year. really.
Oh, I think the whole psychological mindgame play with Starbuck is actually pretty good and downright evil at times. I just hope that this week they "Get on with it!" and start moving things along. There IS such a thing as pacing, ya know.
Bob Cashill - October 17, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
As much as my wife and I are enjoying the second-season DOCTOR WHO stories, we haven't really cottoned to David Tennant's attention-deficit-disordered performance, and the delightful Billie Piper seems to be "playing" Rose, rather than just sort of being her, as in the first season. Eccleston's departure seems to have disrupted the vibe. But we're sticking with it. I hear last Friday's episode (which we're watching tonight) is a good one.
Dale Sherman - October 18, 2006 03:01 AM (GMT)
[Deleting a lot of DOCTOR WHO-related stuff here because I didn't want to derail this topic!}
But, uh, as for BG - I'm still catching up on Season 2.5 on disc and am saving the new season on DVD-R to watch afterwards. Why am I not caught up yet? Because my wife just got the first season of LOST, so we're watching that right now.
Which leads us right back to where we started from here, I believe.

Back to BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Unfortunately, here in Malaysia, we're only getting season 2 now (in particular, last week saw the "hostage situation in Cloud 9" episode) and thus are pre-New Caprica. But already, what I'm seeing is a pretty morose situation...especially with Starbuck being more of a depressed alcoholic than I would like. Still, have to say that it's been quite addictive viewing for me! :P

I think there's a fair amount of darkness for all of the characters during Season 2, culminating in what to me was the best season-ender cliffhanger out of any of the series that I watch.

I'm an avid fan, and have watched all but the last two webisodes prequeling this Season 3. I am going to try and wait for the Universal HD replays/repeats - as Sci Fi is so low-fi in picture quality.

Yeah...isn't that embarassing? It's the SCI-FI CHANNEL for crying out loud!
Then again, SCI-FI feels that extreme wrestling fits in with it's demographics. Ooookayyy.
Domenick Fraumeni - October 28, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
And on the 4th episode, the sun shone through.
A week late, but wow. That was one heckuva episode. From the quietly devestating opening, to the bittersweet climax, it reminds me that whatever I may kvetch about the show, the good parts are SO good, that they just wash away the rest.

Anyone watch the season finale? If so, any thoughts?

SPOILERIFIC spoilers below...
I watched the season finale and thought it was good, if a "bit" UNDER-whelming. I new that some "Cylons" would be revealed... that is, if they are indeed Cylons, but the verdict isn't out yet on that. I just want to know what the hell all that Jimi Hendrix crappola is about... I guess maybe Cylons love classic rock, right? I have a hard time with Anders being one, though... I mean, if he WAS, why go through all the trouble of having him be a part of the resistance on Caprica and all?
Personally, I think that Starbuck is a Cylon... I mean, suddenly she reappears after we all thought she died a few episodes ago... and WHEN she appears, she's with a bunch of Cylons???? Hmmm... and GLOWING? Well, if SHE is a Cylon, they've got some 'splaining to do, too... as in, why would they go through all the trouble of stealing her baby, etc.
I dunno... methinks, personally, that they either have some super-genius writer who is going to "wow" all of us next season and tie things together, or they've started scrambling for crazy ideas with no thoughts on the plots of the past episodes.
Next season is reportedly the "last" one. The series creators say they'd rather end it next year and go out on a "high note" then lose viewers with crap (like, oh, LOST) filler. Of course, this brings up another gripe I have with next season... we have to wait until 2008? Sheesh, by then, I'll have forgotten everything.
Here's some things I predict for Season 4:
- Starbuck is a Cylon and kills Adama's son in the first ep of Season 4... heh! Yeah, yeah, I know... but they only REALLY revealed four of the five (maybe) and saying Baltar is the fifth would be too obvious, right?
- The prez WILL die of breast cancer, right before the survivors get to Earth.
- Baltar will be assassinated before season's end.
- Tigh will get depressed and commit suicide (and to see if he's actually "reborn" as a Cylon).
Bob Cashill - March 28, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
I think we're looking at a new breed of Cylon. Or something other than toasters and their progeny.
In any case, my wife and I dug the season finale, which couldn't hope to beat the last one for intensity, but opens up some intriguing new avenues to be explored in...2008. :(

Sorry to drag this off-topic, but it sure seems like a lot of the best serialized shows are closing shop soon. Deadwood never came back, The Sopranos starts its final half-season in a couple weeks, Battlestar and The Wire each only have one season left, and The Shield starts its penultimate season next month. I don't know what Fox has planned for 24, but Bauer may indeed be the last man standing.

Addressing some of Don's points --- SPOILERS!
if they are indeed Cylons, but the verdict isn't out yet on that.
Moore said in a recent interview that they were cylons -- but of a different kind than the others.
I just want to know what the hell all that Jimi Hendrix crappola is about...
It wasn't Jimi Hendrix (or Bob Dylan). It was a version of "All Along the Watchtower" composed especially for the episode.
I have a hard time with Anders being one, though... I mean, if he WAS, why go through all the trouble of having him be a part of the resistance on Caprica and all?
The bigger logistical problem is with Tigh -- who served with Adama before the original Cylon war -- before "human-like" Cylons were supposedly created.
- Starbuck is a Cylon and kills Adama's son in the first ep of Season 4...
Starbuck kills Apollo?
- The prez WILL die of breast cancer, right before the survivors get to Earth.
Moore has said from the beginning that Roslyn's role in the story is to die in the process of leading the survivors to Earth.

Righto... [SPOILERS AGAIN BELOW]
Whether Hendrix, Dylan, or specially composed... what DOES it mean? I mean, they had the cast members saying lines from the song... why? I can't imagine what that has to do with anything, but I guess we'll find out...
And about my prediction of Starbuck killing Apollo... Yeah... wouldn't that be a kick in the ass? And, it would fit... unless I've got my characters mixed up, wasn't HE the one who saw the uber-glowing Starbuck right at the end of the episode? He follows her, gets caught in an ambush by Cylons and... BLAMMO... dead! That would probably just peeve all the fans, though! I mean, she WAS baiting him wasn't she... something like "Follow me, I've been to Earth and I can show you the way" or some such dialogue?
Wishfull thinking, I guess... I'm just jealous of all the weight he lost in a short amount of time at the beginning of the season! LOL!

Kiefer Sutherland still has two more years left on his contract, so there's plenty more 24 on the horizon.

I vote for prequels for 24...
Speculative Spoilers...
At the end of this season, Kiefer DIES! That would be awesome... then, it would make people wonder what's up and how they would possibly bring him back...
Next season, make a prequel season and bring back some of the cast that have been killed already! Or, do that whole "jungle" thing that was aplot point for a couple seasons already... let's get some back story!
Bob Cashill - March 28, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
I want the backstory on the cougar that so enlivened 24 a few seasons back. :) This week's savant episode brought back memories of how the show used to vamp between shootouts.
Marty McKee - March 28, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
How about a 24 spinoff about Milo and Doyle's adventures in Denver? I give a Balfour/Schroeder series about five weeks tops.

What about ROME? Although I was slow to warm to it, eventually it became one of my favorites -- and I'm very sad that it won't be back.

I'm assuming this is going to lead into some sort of new series variation on the parts of the old series where Starbuck and Apollo end up hanging out with some godlike guys who tint everything white and seem to "know a lot of stuff" but only ever speak in half-assed "you will know when the time is right" style wiseman talk.
And I was wondering if the song was going to end up being a variation of the old series episode where Apollo just misses picking up the Apollo 11 moon landing transmission.
