Title: BCI's 1st TWO PAUL NASCHY DVDs
Description: Has anyone seen these yet?

David Allen Jackson - October 13, 2006 06:08 AM (GMT)
I have these on pre-order, and they haven't been shipped yet, and I checked out a couple of Best Buy stores today, which had some nicely packaged BCI martial arts titles I'd never seen before, yet alone heard of - but no sign yet of NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF (THE CRAVING) or VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES.

Has anyone bought these yet, seen them, had confirmation of shipping, etc.? It's beginning to look like they've been postponed again. I hope this is good news that BCI is working to get everything right and not bad news that we'll be waiting for more weeks and months and years to come

Knowing these are also coming out in the HD-DVD format is almost enough to get me to jump on the HD-DVD bandwagon - but I'm holding out for Toshiba's recently announced second generation of players. My eyes are targeted like a laserbeam, on the HDVA2. If these HD-DVD titles show up too, maybe I should just pick them up as future investments.

Anyone have any insights, thoughts into these oh-so-serious matters? (Well, it's more fun to dwell on this than the fact that the Eisenhower strike force is set to arrive within striking distance of Iran just before the upcoming election... that's just plain depressing.)

Netflix has both films available for rental, but with Very Long Waits.

John Bernhard - October 13, 2006 01:01 PM (GMT)
They are still being tweaked and there is currently no release date for these. The subsequent releases have also been pushed back. I'm hopefull they'll street in time for Christmas! Cliff from BCI will sing out with info when it's available, but for the moment the Spanish Horror titles are in delay mode. The upside to this is BCI caught something and are fixing it and are determined that these releases be 100% perfection ( which is always worth waiting for to me ).

Marty McKee - October 13, 2006 02:37 PM (GMT)
I guess Netflix should list them with a Very Very Very Very Long Wait.

DDD sent me two emails saying that the two titles (at least my pre-order of them) was canceled. Hopefully that's not the end of things.

John Bernhard - October 14, 2006 02:39 AM (GMT)
They are coming out, it's just a matter of when. If you check in at Latarnia in the Naschy and Spanish Horror folders, you'll get the most up to date info. Cliff from BCI posted weeks ago there that the Oct. 10 date was being pushed back while the discs got an additional polish. He is currently out of the country looking at new possibe acquisitions and will be back soon, and hopefully we'll get a new street date once he is back stateside. The delays have fans 'nasching' their teeth in anticipation, but I think it's a safe bet that buyers will be very impressed once they see these discs, and the wait will have been worth it.

I received my screener copies today. While the packaging says the films were mastered in High Definition, they do not say they are IN HD. I assume HD versions are to follow? Or not?

Sean Borg - April 26, 2007 02:35 AM (GMT)
Has anyone else had their order for these cancelled at deepdiscount?

Linn Haynes - April 26, 2007 06:29 AM (GMT)
Fans have contacted DDD. It seems the company is under the impression that the dvds are still canceled from the time before. The woman at the help desk told them to order again.

Sean Borg - April 26, 2007 11:38 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the info Linn. I did try to reorder, but I can't find them anymore!

1. What is BCI’s plan for next gen digital media such as HD and Blu-ray?

We plan to support all formats. When we announced our hd-dvd titles about a year ago, we thought retail would embrace quality titles at an affordable price, but they just wanted studio titles, so we put our plans on hold until the retailers devoted space for the independents. So, I hope we will have hd-dvd releases later this year

Linn Haynes - April 26, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Sean,
I looked as well and couldn't find them. It doesn't help that DDD has the worst search function ever. DVDplanet has them up. NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF is listed as THE CRAVING and THE VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIIES is under HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB.

Sean Borg - April 26, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks again Linn. Much appreciated.

Linn Haynes - April 28, 2007 06:38 PM (GMT)
Forget that, I found the two pack in Best Buy today. Shock of shocks, it was actually in the horror section!! At $19.99 for both, it was a GREAT deal and the discs look great. If you're a fan of the man, it's a must. If not, that's the perfect price point to try these out. Excellent work BCI!

Anthony Thorne - April 29, 2007 08:13 AM (GMT)
Tim's initial thoughts on these two Naschy classics is up at his blog - cool stuff! I hope BCI can release a bunch of these Spanish titles before the whole Eurocult DVD market wheezes its last.

My initial observations from earlier today:

QUOTE
At first I was concerned about the aspect ratio as the Spanish credits are rendered at anamorphic 1.66:1 while the feature itself is 1.78:1. In comparison, the Spanish credits look squeezed at that ratio and there does not seem to be any (perhaps minute) picture loss on the sides or top and bottom of the frame in the 1.78:1 version compared to the 1.66:1 Spanish credits (I'll have to compare the rest of the feature later). The deleted scenes are 1.66:1 anamorphic but perhaps could survive additional matting to about 1.85:1 as was likely for its US theatrical play.

It's disappointing that the English credits only credit Naschy, Saly, Aguilar, and Menta along with editor, production manager, production company, and writer/director as the others certainly deserved credit (most deservingly cinematographer Allejandro Ulloa) and because the preparers of the English version did not bother to shorten the length of the credits freezeframe and music so there are long stretched with no credits. Fortunately the Spanish credits are featured as an extra.

The first difference I noticed was the Countess' sentance. In the Spanish version she was confined to her quarters until death (somewhat historically accurate) while the English version sentanced her to be buried alive.

I also did not realize that three of her accomplices were sentanced to be beheaded (we only see one), I thought he just had a long name but the subtitles put commas between the three names spoken.

I've just submitted a comparison between the BCI and Tripictures discs to DVDBeaver so it should be up in a couple days. The 1.78:1 anamorphic BCI disc definately reveals more picture information than the 1.66:1 Tripictures version.

Michael Den Boer - April 30, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
No surprise I was unable to find any copies of the Naschy DVD's at any of the Best Buys I checked in my area. :( It is getting harder to track down any of these cult DVD releases.

Could someone whom has purchased these Best Buy Exclusives tell me if they're availiable in South Orange County CA? I can't find them on Best Buy's site (even though they are BEST BUY EXCLUSIVE 2'FER'S)! Iknow they're not supposed to come out officailly until 5/8 but...

Bob Cashill - May 3, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
They certainly aren't for sale at Manhattan Best Buys, which have pretty dismal selections. But they seem to be available for purchase (in 4-6 weeks time) from Amazon.

Well, you damn Mobians did it again. I did a blind buy on a gothic horror film based on your delirious anticipation and some beautiful screen captures, just like I did with Castle Of Blood and Lemora. This film was even more fun, with a tasty layer of cheese on top. I went into Night Of The Werewolf a total Naschy newbie and I'm happy to discover a wonderfully daffy combo of Universal monster bash, Hammer horror, and Bava gothic. I found the retro greasepaint werewolf make-up and transformations rather charming, in the way they resemble the photos of every how-to make-up instruction book I ever checked out of the library as a kid. That this film was made just a year before An American Werewolf In London* and The Howling only makes it sweeter. And what a gorgeous-looking transfer! This is like a feast of ice cream cake with fistfuls of candy for every Monster Kid out there.

From reading around at other forums, I take it that Anchor Bay's Werewolf Shadow is the next best Naschy to seek out as a rental?

*One of the women even complains about how they could be in Rome instead of dreary werewolf territory full of unfriendly locals...just like Griffin Dunne! I guess Landis was just too highbrow to have Dunne and David Naughton assaulted by shotgun-wielding rapists.

Yes. In fact, NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF is pretty much a bigger budgeted remake of WEREWOLF SHADOW, which is itself, a major film in the history of European horror, since it pretty much ushered in the Spanish horror wave of the 70's.

AB's dvd is pretty good, though the Devisa import is even nicer. Still though, the AB version will do you quite fine. They also released the pretty good CURSE OF THE DEVIL as well.

Is this the Best Buy combo you are all looking for? Not bad for $16.80, although it appears to be backordered here:

NIGHT is a remake of WEREWOLF SHADOW with elements from DR. JEKYLL AND THE WEREWOLF. Its one of Naschy's most visually stylish films (especially compared to the original).

AB's DVD of WEREWOLF SHADOW is out of print but you can probably still find it (along with their other OOP stuff that seems to have dropped in price). I think the Dutch DVD is the same if you have multi-region capability. I think ABUK also has it out.

Divisa's DVD has better color and some different musical choices but is not English friendly. The image is non-anamorphic but still quite good (you can actually see blood dripping out of the werewolf's mouth in the opening scene).

Bob Cashill - May 5, 2007 03:37 AM (GMT)
Amazon shipped my WEREWOLF today, but that Best Buy combo price (if you can find it) is excellent.

Mark Zimmer - May 11, 2007 03:12 PM (GMT)
I snagged a set of the Exclusive at the Madison WI Best Buy last week. Only one they had out on the shelves, though.

I just checked again. Netflix no longer has either film.

Here's a question for you Naschy scholars from a newbie... in Night Of The Werewolf during Daminsky's nightmare, Countess Bathory calls upon her Master (uhm, Satan? Or some other bloke?) and also Thuistem, "the master of all cats", to deliver 99 black cats onto our hero... and I'm totally lost. Who? Huh? As someone who lives with a cute little black cat, I'm amused at the close-up of the cute little black cat that seems to disturb Naschy so much. Just what in the hell of ferocious felines is going on here and to whom are they referring? Google and Wikipedia came up empty.
