Title: A Look at the TWISTED SEX Series

Robert Plante - September 29, 2006 06:18 PM (GMT)
I've started a series where I'll be examing in detail each volume of Something Weird's Twisted Sex series. Check it out:

Just uploaded the Vol. 2 review, and added a bunch of sleazy newspaper ads. Some rarities covered include EVES ON SKIS, GIRL SMUGGLERS, PROFESSOR LUST, and THE PEEPING PHANTOM.

I see the address - but what city was the LITTLE ART THEATRE in?

I see the address - but what city was the LITTLE ART THEATRE in?

The Little Art Theatre was in Columbus, OH, and run by a Morris "Moe" Schwartz, a former "Dr. Elliot Forbes" for Dave Friedman's MOM AND DAD roadshow. This info, and the great ads for that theatre, are from Terrance Jenings Wharton's 1990s zine Xeromorphic. Other ads are from my Albany and Raleigh-area collection.

The Vol. 3 review has been posted, including rarities like Eddie Romero's THE PASSIONATE STRANGERS, Joe Sarno's SCARF OF MIST THIGH OF SATIN, and Barry Mahon's THE GIRL WITH THE MAGIC BOX, FANNY HILL MEETS DR. EROTICO, and THE DIARY OF KNOCKERS McCALLA. Some choice newspaper ads are included.

Tim Lucas - December 8, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
The trailer for THE DIARY OF KNOCKERS McCALLA is noteworthy for the surprise participation of actor Lane Smith, who later played Perry White on the TV series LOIS & CLARK.

Robert Plante - January 5, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
The review of TS Vol. 4 has been posted. Rarities covered include Joe Sarno's WARM NIGHTS & HOT PLEASURES, UK nudie SOME LIKE IT COOL, DAYS OF SIN AND NIGHTS OF NYMPHOMANIA, and WHIP'S WOMEN.

Robert Plante - April 12, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
Just posted the Vol. 5 review:

http://plantweed.blogspot.com/

Rarities covered include DEVIL’S GIRLS, ON HER BED OF ROSES, THE STREET IS MY BEAT, DIAMOND BUST, DR. MASHER, and THE LECHER.

John Black - April 13, 2007 06:32 AM (GMT)
ON HER BED OF ROSES was briefly available as a SWV VHS release, but I believe that it was pulled due to copyright issues.

THE STREET IS MY BEAT was a rarity that actually played drive-ins in Seattle, rather than the usual downtown "art" theater.

John Black - April 13, 2007 06:50 AM (GMT)
Along with THE STREET IS MY BEAT, there are a few other sixties exploitation flicks that have never, to my knowledge, shown up on home video:

MME. OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR
PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE (Mamie, June, Ted Knight)
ANGELS FLIGHT (uncompleted, but exists as a "workprint", and once aired on a PBS channel in LA)
LIKE IT IS (aka NOT MY DAUGHTER, 1970/75) Was released on Australian PAL in the early eighties as NOT MY DAUGHTER, but long out of print--not to be confused with the William Rotsler hippie documentary.

Robert Plante - April 13, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
There are a lot of them actually, but the two biggies for me are Tom Laughlin's THE YOUNG SINNER and Al Adamson's LASH OF LUST. I really hope they turn up someday.

John Black - April 14, 2007 07:02 AM (GMT)
THE YOUNG SINNER (aka WE ARE ALL CHRIST) is definitely on my want list.

The title LASH OF LUST reminds me of an Audrey Campbell/Dyanne Thorne flick that was completed but never released, due to nebulous reasons.

I hope to see Crown International's THE BABYSITTER show up in the new BCI Grindhouse series.

If WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR is public domain (based on its inclusion in the latest Sinister catalog), I can't believe that it will escape commercial release forever. However, probably only 35mm prints are uncut.

Tim Lucas - April 14, 2007 08:17 AM (GMT)
I've given up all hope of ever seeing THE SMUT PEDDLER, but I console myself with the knowledge it could never live up to its trailer.

You're thinking of the earlier Joe Sarno film of the same title. Hasn't turned up either.

The listing to ERIKA'S HOT SUMMER is pretty great...

A few years back I was set to interview Erica Gavin for an article and we spoke briefly about that movie (a full interview never came together). She said she didn't remember it but did remember the footage shot by Gary Graver (mostly Ms. Gavin running around on a beach in a yellow bikini). She didn't realize he cobbled it together to form a "movie!"

Mike Mariano - April 18, 2007 02:59 AM (GMT)
There's a trailer for PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE (1964) on Sinister Cinema's Exploitation Trailers Vol. 6 (though Sinister themselves no longer offer trailer tapes). Judging from the trailer, it looks like it may be similar to PROMISES! PROMISES! with Jayne Mansfield. Ted Knight plays a corrupt Senator involved with Mamie Van Doren and call girl June Wilkinson in a Washington sex-scandal drama. Black & white, low-budget, with a bit of nudity (June topless, I think) and a couple Playboy playmates in the cast. As you say, John, another film that's MIA.

John Black - April 18, 2007 06:08 AM (GMT)
I first learned of the film THE CANDIDATE back around 1964, in a forgotten movie magazine entitled Movies Illustrated. The magazine showed pictures from both the domestic and the foreign (more explicit) versions.

I had long since forgotten about it, although there is a soundtrack LP of the music, I believe. Sinister (possibly simultaneously with SWV) did release the trailer preview, under the somewhat longer title PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE.

It is indeed MIA. Another MIA flick is PRIVATE PROPERTY from around 1960, from Leslie Stevens before he eventually made INCUBUS. My mother inadvertently saw PRIVATE PROPERTY first run, and was really shocked by it. I don't think it has played anywhere since those days.

Robert Plante - June 6, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
The review for Vol. 6 has been added:

http://plantweed.blogspot.com/

Titles covered include GIRLS OF THE NIGHT (59), HOT MONEY GIRL/THE TREASURE OF SAN TERESA (59), WILD IS MY LOVE (63), SCHOOL FOR LOVE (60), GEISHA PLAYMATES (60), PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE (64), VOODOO VILLAGE/SORCERER'S VILLAGE (58), HIGH YELLOW (65), INDISCREET STAIRWAY (66), I, MARQUIS DE SADE (67), CONFESSIONS OF A BAD GIRL (65), THE HOUSE OF CATS (66), BARBARA (70), LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AND HIS WIFE (70), and SLAVES IN CAGES/THE CAPTIVES (72).

Marty McKee - June 6, 2007 06:54 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the updates, Robert. These films aren't my bag, so I don't have much to say about them, but I appreciate your efforts.

John Black - June 7, 2007 06:30 AM (GMT)
I think that the poster artwork for I, MARQUIS DE SADE was later "borrowed" for another exploitation campaign, possibly for a foreign release of THE MANSON MASSACRE.

I believe that WILD IS MY LOVE stars Ray Fulmer, who would go on to star in the later episodes of the sitcom HAZEL. Fulmer's wife in the TV series was played by Lynn Borden, who also appeared in a few cult films herself.

Marc Edward Heuck - June 7, 2007 09:43 AM (GMT)
I'm ticked at all the old ads you found from the "Little Art" theatre in Columbus, which went on to become the World adult house, and then the Roxy second-run art house before closing and turning into a gym and now a dance club. I went there a lot my freshman year at OSU before it closed.

I may have to get Volume 6 just to get that trailer for WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR, since WB didn't include it on their DVD for the film. Probably didn't even know there was an extant version available.

John Black - June 8, 2007 06:53 AM (GMT)
Along with the other lost sixties black and white exploitation flicks that we've mentioned here, I would love to find RAT FINK, which was lensed by Vilmos Zsigmond in 1965. There is a trailer for RAT FINK included on SWV's WILD GUITAR/CHOPPERS DVD two-fer. So, my current want list is:

RAT FINK
MME. OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR
PRIVATE PROPERTY
ANGELS FLIGHT
THE STREET IS MY BEAT
THE YOUNG SINNER (WE ARE ALL CHRIST)
PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE

One of my favorites in this genre is THE GLASS CAGE, which fortunately is available from Sinister Cinema.

Robert Plante - June 9, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
I think when I'm all finished with this series, we'll be looking at dozens and dozens of titles that have never been released on home video. Maybe I'll make up a list and we can shake a few out of the trees.

John Black - June 16, 2007 06:18 AM (GMT)
To my list in my last post, I'll add:

LIKE IT IS (aka NOT MY DAUGHTER) (1970) Forgotten, poorly distributed generation gap exploitationer.

WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR Sinister Cinema is selling this, but their print is missing about 4 minutes from the uncut version. I still want an official, uncut, and letterboxed DVD.

Robert Plante - August 16, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
The Vol. 7 review has been posted:

http://plantweed.blogspot.com/

Highlights include BIBI CONFESSIONS OF SWEET 16 (76), THE BODY BENEATH (70), THE DEPRAVED (71), FLY ME (73), FRUSTRATED WIVES (73), THE NINE AGES OF NAKEDNESS (69), THE SCAVENGERS (69), THE SENSUOUS HOUSEWIFE (76), SWEDEN HEAVEN AND HELL (68), and VENUS IN FURS (67).

John Black - August 17, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
Always fun to see these reviews, Robert. I do think that George Sanders narrated ECCO!, unless it was Paul Frees imitating Sanders.

Robert Plante - August 17, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
Thanks, John. George Sanders did the movie itself, but it's definitely Frees in the trailer.

Robert Plante - September 26, 2007 03:25 PM (GMT)
The Vol. 8 review is up. Some titles include THE TALE OF THE DEAN’S WIFE (69), WANG WANG (74), LES PLAISIRS FOUS (77), THE SWINGIN' PUSSYCATS (69), YOUNG SEDUCERS (72), EROTIC CARTOON FESTIVAL (76), THE CAT ATE THE PARAKEET (72), PUT OUT OR SHUT UP (58), BANG BANG THE MAFIA GANG (71), and THE NAKED FLAME (64).

John Black - September 28, 2007 06:38 AM (GMT)
The Sinister Cinema print of THE SINISTER URGE is the best looking print of that film that I've seen. However, the older Admit One print had a topless shot that's missing from the Sinister Cinema version.
