Title: Joseph Larraz's Warren days
Description: CREEPY and EERIE Strips

Mike Metzler - September 29, 2006 03:08 AM (GMT)
Just read that the director of VAMPYRES and SCREAM - AND DIE! used to be an artist for Warren comics. Anyone ever read his strips? Where they atmospheric and/or did they relate to his films at all?

Marty McKee - September 29, 2006 04:18 AM (GMT)
No one using that name ever drew for CREEPY, EERIE, VAMPIRELLA, BLAZING COMBAT or any of the yearbooks, according to this Warren checklist.

According to the book 'Immoral Tales':

"Some of Larraz's best work for the magazines Creepy and Eerie were his jungle strips". No other details are given.

There's more detailed info here: link

So whens Larraz other films coming to DVD proper?

Who knows? I think Larraz is one of the most unjustly neglected genre directors on the DVD front - the fact that SYMPTOMS isn't available anywhere beggars belief. I wonder if the materials no longer exist to master a DVD release (it hardly even got released on VHS).

I consider myself fortunate to have a nice looking copy of SYMPTOMS from a French VHS source. I also have a copy of the 'Prima' VHS release of DEVIATION (a surprisngly enjoyable film) and recently a friend sent me a copy of Larraz's long-presumed-lost first film WHIRLPOOL, in ropey quality but something I thought I'd never see.

Obviously VAMPYRES is readily available, and SCREAM & DIE is also out (though lacking in extras). Then there's the cut UK release of LA VISITA DEL VICIO. That's about it isn't it (ignoring his late 80's work)? You'd think BLACK CANDLES would have been released by now, if only for sheer trash value...

Classic Spanish genre cinema (except Naschy and Franco) seems to generally get a rough ride when it comes to DVD; where are the two excellent films by Serrador for example? LA RESIDENCIA and WOULD YOU KILL A CHILD? are available on non-English releases, but why no US/UK release? Or what about Jorg Grau's CEREMONIA SANGRIENTA? I'm sure there are other good examples though at least the odd one gets through (like BELL FROM HELL for example)...

I wasn't aware of a Scream & Die dvd being available. Any more info?
