Title: VAMPYR
Description: How's the Image disc?

I'm thinking of buying the Image DVD of VAMPYR, having previously only seen the Redemption UK VHS. Any comments on this disc?

Thanks, Adam.

Not bad, but the transfer was taken from Dreyer's personal print, which I believe had embossed subtitles on it, so to cover them up, the new English subtitles are positioned in a black bar that takes up the bottom fourth of the screen. The biggest sin, however, is that the original artistically done opening credits sequence has been replaced by a generic English credits sequence. I really hope these problems are corrected by a new (hopefully Special) Edition at some point.

This would be a good target for Criterion, since they've done so much Dreyer very well. Or possibly Kino. Given the fogginess of the film, I have to believe a new transfer with an extremely high bitrate on an RSDL disc could make it look better. But given the film itself, it's watchable on the Image disc.

I recently picked up a DVD from Siren Visual Entertainment, one that pairs VAMPYR with NOSFERATU (1922). I believe it's Australian, but Region Zero.

Having seen the same old version of VAMPYR so many times in the past, I was resigned to another go, but this appears to be a different cut! It has a different title sequence, lacks those boxy giant subtitles, and I think the audio is clearer than I've yet heard. One or two lines appear to be in English. The visuals are pretty washed out, but it's certainly worth checking out.

The print of NOSFERATU is a rather good one as well, and it's the version with the extended scenes a la Kino's.

I'm still hoping for a better release of VAMPYR.

Considering I had to have my copy replaced by IMAGE, it's pretty good, though the black boxes with the titles are enormous! I think I've got a crush on Nicolas De Gunzberg, by the way.

I am reminded of a line in The Lion In Winter which goes something like "No sense complaining about the air when there's nothing else to breathe."

The Image Vampyr is the only game in town. I'm very glad to have it, but the edges of the print have deteriorated and the BIG black bar subtitles with Gothic Old English script are overwhelming and really annoying after a while.

On a more positive note, the animated short at the end of it (which derives from The Cameraman’s Revenge & Other Fantastic Tales) is very nice--one of my favorites.
