Title: WB farewell

Lisa Larkin - September 5, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)
The WB network, former home of "Buffy", "Angel", "Dawson's Creek" and many other shows featuring pretty young things [including the current "Supernatural" and "Smallville"] is signing off for good on September 17th. To commemorate the occasion, they are airing a five hour block of pilot episodes from their glory days. In the lineup: "Buffy", "Angel", "Dawson's Creek" and "Felicity". During the commercial breaks they will run network promos from the 11 year history of the network. I guess that means the return of Michigan J. Frog. I wonder if they will include clippage from the shows that didn't last a season. I've forgotten most of them, but I remember one that they promoted heavily from the Scream/Dawson's Creek guy.

Anyway, it's a chance to see those pilots again if you don't own the DVDs. I could live to be 100 and never watch an episode of "Dawson's Creek" again, but your mileage may vary.

The CW network launches the next day but they don't have any season premieres until the following week. I hope that means they will repeat all the returning shows' season finales that first week. That's not necessarily a sure thing given the change in ownership. When "Buffy" moved to UPN, they couldn't air any of the WB episodes until they negotiated a deal. The situation is a little different since it's more of a merger than completely new ownership, but who knows.

You may not have noticed, but UPN is already gone. Tonight, the new MyNetworkTV begins broadcasting telenovelas on most of the old UPN channels.

Y'know, I saw a commercial on Cartoon Network for the new season of Pokemon episodes beginning next Saturday, not on Kids WB, where it's been for 8 years, but on Cartoon Network!

So, seeing that and reading your post, I'm putting 2+2 together and guessing that Kids WB is gone too! I have cable, but what about all those other kids who are Pokemon fans who don't get cable? How unfair! :o

Looks like they dropped Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh but the Kids WB lives on on the CW:

My local CW affiliate in Washington State already rebranded themselves a couple weeks back from UPN 11 to CW 11. Apart from a graphics change and new sign-on / off film I haven't noticed any big differences.

"Kids WB on the CW"???????
(Let's keep that on the QT or the DL, shall we?)

Thank God I won't have to remember that. Without Pokemon, there's no reason for me to tune in.
<_<

Out of curiosity, have any of you ever regularly watched anything on UPN? I forget it even existed most of the time. My market didn't have an affiliate until just a few years ago.

I saw several episodes of THE SENTINEL and SEVEN DAYS, which were actually pretty decent action-oriented SF shows. I would consider buying SEVEN DAYS if it came out on DVD. Outside of the ENTERPRISE pilot, I don't think I've ever seen one second of another UPN series (although I'd kill to see the jawdropping THE SECRET LIFE OF DESMOND PFEIFFER, which was a sitcom about slaves in the Lincoln White House!).

Wasn't NOWHERE MAN one of their early shows? I had a good time with that series. Never did see SEVEN DAYS and only a couple of the SENTINEL episodes. A few VOYAGER episodes. More recently I've watched a few VERONICA MARS episodes and find it to be quite a well done show.

UPN had two shows I watched religiously: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" [season 6 & 7] and "Veronica Mars" [season 1 & 2]. Looking at the Wikipedia page, I'm reminded of one of their failed series, "Legend", which was a sort of Brisco County-ish sci-fi/western starring Richard Dean Anderson [post-MacGyver, pre-Stargate] and John DeLancie. It wasn't anywhere near as good as "Brisco County" and UPN pulled the plug on it pretty fast, as I recall. I did like "Nowhere Man" a lot and was sorry they never wrapped it up.

So is anyone planning on watching the launch of MyNetworkTV tonight with the English language telenovelas "Desire" and "Fashion House"? I'm sort of curious since they shot both shows locally. "Fashion House" stars Bo Derek and Morgan Fairchild as dueling designer divas.

Gotta love the critical blurbs on their website: "old-school camptastic" [TV Guide] and " "Think of MyNetworkTV as Aaron Spelling sudsers on speed" [Entertainment Weekly].
