I was just thinking about this pretty amazing movie and wanted to leave a post about it---Are there any other fans out there that appreciate this fairly obscure horror "comedy"?
*SPOILERS!* *SPOILERS!*
This movie absolutely floored me when I first rented it from a dusty Mom & Pop video store...I had previously seen the photos in FANGORIA mag of the monster-poodle creature and thought, "Ugh...not interested." But having seen everything else I gave it a shot---wow, what a totally unconventional movie! Despite it's many flaws, I was totally entranced. I mean the two leads are an old detective (the AMAZING Ed Nelson---check out his resume!!! WOW) and a 300 pound psychic (I would have loved to have seen Divine play this part)...plus Phyliss Diller (as Miss Poopinplatz! That sounds like a name from a lost John Waters movie) and Norman Fell in pretty unusual roles...
the movie was alternately pretty creepy (the SUPER creepy child zombies, the most amazing things I've ever seen, especially for a fairly low-budget flick) to pretty silly but entertaining (the poodle monster and Diller's wobbly mutant monster creature)-----and that ending with it's credit roll super cheesy late 80's soft radio song...
what a strange mix! left me reeling for days and I had to show it to all my friends...
I was able to pick up a DVD of the film a couple years back and it has A LOT of extras on it---particularly an interview with Diller as well as photo galleries and interviews with crew, etc.
I also love the fact that the film was promoted in two different ways---one of the early VHS incarnations was promoted as purely horror while the other was displayed as a cult-y comedy horror/monster movie...
Any thoughts on this? I wish I could see/find another truly one-of-a-kind horror movie like this.
When due to finances I had to sell off my DVD collection, this was the last one sold (I suppose it says a lot about me that the only one I've held on to throughout is the Synapse THE BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE.)
I love THE BONEYARD. A mostly unconventional cast plays against an odd blend of send-up/straight horror. Obviously written by someone who loves the genre, but can't write it straight.
It's definitely in the same league with Peter Jackson's "DEAD ALIVE". The commentary on the DVD is definitely worth a listen for anyone interested in low budget, independent film making.
In the same league with Jackson's film? Whoa there...I mean, I too like THE BONEYARD, but...
