Title: Behind the scenes pics from LAND OF THE DEAD
William S. Wilson - December 4, 2004 09:07 PM (GMT)
Moviesonline.ca has post a small set of 18 behind the scenes pictures from Romero's currently shooting zombie film. If anyone wants to check out what the truck "Dead Reckoning" looks like, it is in here:
LAND OF THE DEAD

Here's zombie extra Susan Wloszczyna's (how does one pronounce that name?) on-set report in case anyone hasn't seen it:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2...01-zombie_x.htmI like her comparison of a George Romero zombie film to a Clint Eastwood western or a Martin Scorsese gangster epic.
Did any Mobians manage to make it to Toronto to be a zombie?

I wish I could give details but Roy Frumkes shot some behind the scenes footage of Land of the Dead, and from the stories I heard it's gonna be a great film experience, especially for hardcore Romero worshippers like myself.

I sorta got a kick out of the pics of Uniontown...overgrown in the interum, but neatly raked.
Chris Barry - December 6, 2004 09:42 PM (GMT)
One of the things that worries me is casting Dennis Hopper in LAND OF THE DEAD - as an actor, I don't know how he can go beyond parodying himself...But John Leguizamo is a casting coup!
John Szpunar - December 6, 2004 09:58 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know what part Hopper has been cast for?
William S. Wilson - December 6, 2004 11:04 PM (GMT)
John,
To answer you question

Hopper will be playing Kaufman, the "head" of elite who run the fortified city.

Thanks for the link- pics are great and seeing Romero directing a zombie film after all these years almost brought tears to my eyes! I just hope that he will preserve his style of filmmaking instead of trying to make a film like the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. But in any case, I really trust Romero!!
But I think that Tom Savini is not in the movie... Anybody knows why?
Don May Jr - December 7, 2004 09:10 PM (GMT)
Tom is in the movie... he told me he was. And I know he was on set a few weeks ago.
James Clifton - December 8, 2004 10:18 AM (GMT)
Savini was originally slated to have both a cameo and a semi-decent acting role. Unfortunately, once Universal picked up distribution rights, they apparently didn't want Savini having a prominent onscreen role as they felt it would conflict will his brief appearance in the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. From what I understand, he'll be having a cameo only - one that alludes to a previous character in the series.
Of course this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but that's what I hear...
Shame, really.
Steve Guariento - December 8, 2004 12:58 PM (GMT)
Do we know why Savini isn't providing the makeup effects this time around (isn't Greg Nicotero handling them this time)? Has he simply retired from the makeup business? Was his bid too high to secure the gig? It just seems very odd that the celebrated Romero/Savini zombie partnership has been ruptured, slightly, with this "final" instalment of the series...
Lefteris Tsoutsos - December 8, 2004 01:00 PM (GMT)
Well, my problem is that there will be someone else handling the special FX instead of Savini... But apart from that, I also appreciate his acting and would really love to see him getting a role in LAND OF THE DEAD. Damn...
Mark Entwistle - December 8, 2004 06:39 PM (GMT)
According to a few sites, Savini will be playing the role of
****SPOILER********
Blade, the head biker from Dawn. Last we saw he was falling off a balcony. So he's been wandering around undead ever since. I'd rather see Howard Sherman back as Bub, but I suppose this will do.
Sal Ciavarello - December 8, 2004 07:47 PM (GMT)
I guess this is a Spoiler....
But yeah, I like the idea that Savini is playing the biker once again but he's now a decaying zombie after all these years! I think it's a very cool idea.

Steve and Lefteris:
I believe Savini isn't doing the effects simply because he doesn't really do that anymore. He's pretty much left the world of doing make-up effects for features to concentrate on running his make-up effects school and is more interested in acting.
Also, I thought the main reason Savini couldn't have a larger acting role in LAND OF THE DEAD was due to Canadian union rules?
And let's not forget that KNB got their start as Savini's crew, and they handled the effects on DAY OF THE DEAD under Savini's guidance, so it's not like the job was given to a Romero DEAD virgin. KNB are Savini's proteges and in my opinion, in savini's absense they were the right choice to take up the DEAD make-up effects mantle.
Vincent
William S. Wilson - December 9, 2004 01:22 AM (GMT)
I agree with Vincent. KNB is the right team for the job given their past DEAD experience. I think Optic Nerve would have been great too (are they still around?). I loved the zombie work they did on the NOTLD remake.

Possibly, but I don't see why if you had to give up one or more of your cards, you'd give up your ace - that ace being Tom Savini. There's an in-built audience for this picture and that audience is expecting the participation of Savini in some capacity or another but presumably one of significance.
Maybe Romero valued his other cards more or maybe the hard word did come down from the top (hence the Universal rumor). There doesn't seem to have been much of a tussle, however, and nobody really seems phased by Savini's virtual exclusion from this episode in the series.
Hey, I'm glad Tom's got a cameo and I'm sure the movie is gonna be dynamite, its just a shame his contribution will be of no greater significance than, say, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) - who also briefly appear in the film.
First Pittsburgh and now this. I'm very disappointed.

Does anyone know what Asia Argento's role is? and any pics of her on the set
William S. Wilson - December 13, 2004 03:39 AM (GMT)
Asia Argento is playing...
**MAJOR SPOILERS**
a character named Slack. In the script I read, she is a former prostitute who the hero saves from being zombie food in a twisted underground gambling den. She then teams up with him to help on his mission.
