Title: NIGHT OF THE LEPUS
Description: and other animal horror obscurities
Nick Karakizis - December 2, 2004 01:15 PM (GMT)
I watched this one several years ago and i still cant forget how trashy it was!But still, pure entertainment!
What other bizzare animal horror films have you seen?
A friend of mine told me about a film called ATTACK OF THE BLOODY LLAMAS or something like that.
Has anyone seen this?
Lefteris Tsoutsos - December 2, 2004 02:09 PM (GMT)
Alway nice to see people interested in great movies like these. I reallly must watch NIGHT OF THE LEPUS- I think that it's main idea is brilliant. Anybody knows if this has any possibilities of getting a dvd release?
I just got CLAWS (does the title bring anything to mind?) which features a huge killer bear. Starts off with 2 huge bears fighting. Aftewards a bunch of hunters start shooting at them and some other bears go after bloody revenge.
Also gotta love Something Weird's BLOOD FREAK- the movie with the (stoned) killer turkey! Yes you heard right. This is an absolute masterpiece and never got the attention it deserves.
But my favorite animal film is master Enzo Castellari's LAST SHARK which easily blows Spielberg's gay shark out of the water. Castellari's shark is huge, growls like a lion and even crushes a helicopter (a children's toy actually). Not to mentioned the great gore in the film. Well, the Italians always do it better...
And we shouldn't forget about RATS, KILLER CROCODILE- but we can talk about these extensively at the euro-cult forum... :D
Marty McKee - December 2, 2004 03:33 PM (GMT)
You can talk about them here too, Lefteris. All horror is on-topic here, be it American, European, Asian...or Martian! In fact, I just snared a copy of THE GREAT ALLIGATOR with Barbara Bach, but haven't seen it yet. Any thoughts on it?
For killer animals, it's hard to top the ridiculousness of GRIZZLY and PROPHECY, which make for a perfectly riotous Killer Bear Night at the Movies. In GRIZZLY, the killer bear lops a horse's head off with one swoop of its mighty paw, while PROPHECY hits you with a double-decker of outrageous scenes: Bobby Foxworth wrestling with a manic raccoon (!) and the infamous sleeping-bag murder, a scene you'll be rewinding to rewatch for hours.

Do you mean BARN OF THE BLOOD LLAMA? It was some no-budget cheapie made in the mid-90s by some guys in Austin, Tx. Missed this when I was at the SXSW alternative festival in '98...
You can judge from the following reviews by The Flick Filosopher (MaryAnn Johansen):

I think that the market is right for a film about killer ferrets. Any takers?

In college I made a short film about a killer ferret. Maybe I should expand that idea into a feature?
Ed Black - December 2, 2004 07:45 PM (GMT)
oh man, someone mentioned the last shark. i have that under the title great white and it is undoubtedly the most ridiculous thing ive ever seen. the best part is....
SPOILER ALERT...
when the two guys are stuck on the little raft thing and the one guy is in the water and the shark comes out of the water and bobs around until the guy floats near his mouth and then gets eaten. completely dumb but highly watchable.
also, day of the animals is a good one, as was grizzly, which i believe were directed by the same guy. someone else already mentioned blood freak as well, which would be high on my list.
Marty McKee - December 2, 2004 08:07 PM (GMT)
Oh, yeah, GREAT WHITE (aka THE LAST SHARK) is a lot of absurd fun. Every time we see each other, my friend and I greet with "Damn youuuuuuuuu!" after James Franciscus in the climactic scene.
GREAT WHITE is full of glorious idiocy. I like to fantasize that the local butcher, after selling out his entire stock of beef to shark hunters who used them to tantalize their prey, was able to close his shop and head to Tahiti for a well-earned vacation.
Nikos D Vassiliou - December 3, 2004 09:39 AM (GMT)
GREAT WHITE/LAST SHARK is one of the finest examples of European
monster-films, and it is a shame that legal matters will probably prevent it
from getting a wide DVD release. As far as aquatic monsters are concerned
I am quite fond of SHARK ATTACK 3 which has a brilliant twist towards the
end a brilliant discussion immediately prior to a sex scene, that I cannot quote
at the moment. I also love the english-dubbed bulgarian cast. For some reason
I haven't gotten around to the other two titles in the series.
I also enjoy the Dick Randall release of (I think) a Tai film simply calles CROCODILE with an insanely huge crocodile massacring a village.
By the way, has there ever been a killer swordfish film? I always felt there should be one.
Torstein Karlsen - December 3, 2004 11:48 AM (GMT)
I dig these kind of movies
Night Of The Lepus is excellent, come on with a dvd release already!
Day Of The Animals is also good with a sadistic Leslie Nielsen B)
Crocodile from thailand or something is fun
Tintorera - The Killer Shark was very bad, too little shark action, too much tight pants latinos
Killer Crocodile is great, gotta love that one
Monster Shark is... well... special to say the least :P
I'm looking for the name of a 70s ants movie with small ants, not gigantic ones they had in the 60s, i remember i loved it as a kid, i heard the title Phase IV, might be that i guess.
Nikos D Vassiliou - December 3, 2004 12:12 PM (GMT)
Yes, it's PHASE IV. I caught it on TV many years ago and I remember it to be
a quite good film, but definitely artier than the ones mentioned above...
Joel Stein - December 3, 2004 05:54 PM (GMT)
Could be PHASE IV...Could also be ANTS with Suzanne Somers. While both involve small ants, there's a world of difference between them!

I'm not going to quote this line of dialogue either  but it had my wife and I both looking at each other in disbelief the first 5 times we rewound and rewatched the scene on the DVD. We still try to work it into conversations. It's especially funny in the context of the film (the characters in question have just escaped from being chomped on and have both lost companions earlier that day). Anyone who has seen SHARK ATTACK 3 will know the line. I don't remember the twist ending though.
Another DTV Megalodon film, SHARK HUNTER with Antonio Sabata Jr., did feature a neat twist near the end that I really didn't see coming. It was a refreshing change from the typical formula these films often follow and a nice capper to an otherwise mediocre thriller. I especially liked the "underwater" scenes in this that looked like the cast was walking around a set s-l-o-w-l-y with blue lighting and chalk dust floating in the air.
Nick Karakizis - December 4, 2004 03:14 AM (GMT)
I also loved Franco Prosperi's WILD BEASTS.
It was about a zoo with poisoned water that turned all the animals into blood thirsty beasts!
Watch out for the scene where a jaguar(or a panther,i am not sure)hunts a man driving a volkswagen!!
Has anyone seen NIGHT OF A 1000 CATS?Are there blood drinking :D cats in the movie or the title is symbolic like Lenzi's GATTI ROSSI IN UN LABIRINTO VITRO(Translated as RED CATS IN A GLASS LABYRINTH a.k.a EYEBALL)
a movie with no cats inside, except the title...
Lefteris Tsoutsos - December 6, 2004 01:42 AM (GMT)
Somebody here mentioned a NIGHT OF THE LEPUS dvd release. Any details on this (availability, Company, country, aspect ratio- etc) would be highly appreciated.
Eric Weber - December 6, 2004 03:13 AM (GMT)
night of the lepus will be released by warner bros. probably late next year.
other great killer animals!
Tentacles! Slugs! Squirm! Food of the Gods 1 AND 2!!! Would Q count?
Empire of the Ants! Alligator (oh Ramone!)
Of Unknown Origin!
Cujo!
Razorback!
What's the killer baboon movie, In the Shadow of Kilimanjaro? The VHS box used to terrify me!
Pigs---isn't that the name of the bizarre Marc Lawrence killer pigs movie? Blood Farm (i think was an alternate title) or something like that?
Ed Black - December 6, 2004 03:29 PM (GMT)
yes, in the shadow of killamanjaro was the name of the killer baboon movie. that box terrified me when i was a little kid, i mean, with a box like that how could the movie not me amazing. i finally saw it one day, and to put it nicely, i was very disappointed.

It wasn't the ending actually I was referring to the first attack
of the mother, I hate to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it.
As far as Q is concenrned, it does sit to fit the bill, but I don't
think its fair to group it with all this stuff, although the monster
is probably the worst.
I think BLOOD FREAK is my favourite of the genre.

Let's hear it for an arachnid-tastic duo, John 'Bud' Cardos' KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS (1977) and Chris Munger's KISS OF THE TARANTULA (1975)! Both guilty pleasures of mine for some reason, and both readily available on DVD too - in fact KINGDOM is out in Germany in a matted 1.85:1 widescreen print (with choice of German or English track) in a great cardboard slipcase. Some might prefer the bargain-bin U.S. full-frame release on Goodtimes Video which offers more picture and stronger colours but cannot improve William Shatner's gurning over-acting... KISS OF THE TARANTULA is the stronger of the two films, with a CARRIE inspired plot and very nasty final scene. Anybody else like either of these flicks?

[QUOTE] Tintorera - The Killer Shark was very bad, too little shark action, too much tight pants latinos
Years ago I rented a Spanish language tape of this, and even on that the dialogue changed from Spanish to English and back again, just like on the new DVD. Of course, the new disc--at two hours--is longer than the tape. As you say, about 5% is devoted to shark action, and the other 95% is devoted to Hugo Stiglitz and his buddy picking up on women, partying and occasionally getting involved in a groovy 70s love triangle or two. I guess you just have to wade through the shark footage to, as Joe Bob Briggs would say, to get to the good stuff--like a Susan George topless scene or Fiona Lewis skinnydipping. On second thought, even with Susan, Fiona, Jennifer Ashley and Priscilla Barnes, the movie was still a little on the dull side. It does have plenty of nice travelogue footage of Mexico though.
Jeff Nelson - December 7, 2004 06:24 AM (GMT)
Let's not forget the killer bees films, the best example of which is probably the television film SAVAGE BEES, and the worst example of which is probably THE BEES. THE SWARM I rate better than THE BEES, because it's at least entertaining.
And the killer spiders films, such as KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS and TARANTULA: THE DEADLY CARGO.
I don't see how Q could fit, because it is a fantasy monster that never existed (well, not as far as we know anyway...).
As for my favorite animal-runs-amuck film, ALLIGATOR is it.
"But my favorite animal film is master Enzo Castellari's LAST SHARK which easily blows Spielberg's gay shark out of the water. Castellari's shark is huge, growls like a lion and even crushes a helicopter (a children's toy actually). Not to mentioned the great gore in the film. Well, the Italians always do it better..."
As for "gay" sharks, did JAWS really need to be called that? It seems to have been used as a slur against a minority group, a term of derision...a practice I find a bit reprehensible. Lefteris, I'm sure you meant no harm, but nevertheless I felt I should speak out about it.
Nigel J Burrell - December 7, 2004 07:49 AM (GMT)
FAO Jeff Nelson: I don't know in what context Lefteris meant his quote, but here in the UK I've noticed that current 'teen-speak' (AKA 'gibberish'...) seems to use the word 'gay' to mean 'useless' or 'naff' rather than homosexual (though I guess both are still kind of linked together in what passes for UK teenagers' minds)... I once heard a teenage boy speaking to an older man of the same background (ie. not too clever, or to be PC, 'intellectually and socially challenged') along the lines that someone he was disparaging , a 'mate' of his, was rather 'gay'. Incredulously, and with the requisite tone of aggression that all too often goes hand in hand with mindless stupidity, the older guy replied "What?! He's GAY?", to which the teen hurriedly replied, somewhat defensively, "Yeah, well he's not 'gay', he's 'gay', you know?". That cleared things up then! Now, I'm sure that Castellari's shark is not attracted to other sharks of the same sex, but it is certainly a tad 'naff'!
Jeff Nelson - December 7, 2004 08:29 AM (GMT)
I guess what I mean is that "gay" has morphed into an all-purpose negative adjective, rooted in homophobia. Using it in this fashion is a slur, like it or not. Here's an interesting article regarding its use by a couple of pro boxers on ESPN:
http://www.totalobscurity.com/mind/news/20...ay-comment.htmlAnd this will be my last post on the subject, as I don't wish to drag this thread any further off topic.
Lefteris Tsoutsos - December 7, 2004 08:45 PM (GMT)
Well guys, when I wrote about "Spielberg's gay shark" I couldn't imagine that some of you would misunderstand it. To avoid any offense, I have nothing against gay people as long as they stay away from me.
And with that characterization I meant that Spielberg's shark is not as huge, mean and brutal as Castellari's. Hope this will clear things out a bit. As Jeff himself wrote, I meant no harm. Guys where is your sense of humour? :D
In any case, I think it's not right to jump to conclusions just because of a single word.
Anyway I think it would be much more interesting to continue with our "animal obscurities" topic instead of arguing for no reason...
Marty McKee - December 7, 2004 11:03 PM (GMT)
Let's please keep this thread on the topic of misanthropic killer animals. I understand Lefteris' sense of humor, but if this thread is to remain open, we need to not discuss contemporary slang in it.
Thanks,
Marty McKee
