Title: Questions for Universal Titles on DVD
Description: I'm speaking w/ their PR person Today

Todd Loya - October 20, 2004 10:41 AM (GMT)
Well as the title and description say I'm going to Uni's retailer And rentailer seminar tonight at 7pm in Irvine, CA and like last year will be annoying them about their screw ups and plans with there Genre catalog. I'm looking for questions so I don't forget anything important. I will of course ask about "Night Gallery" future plans and their problems, the reason for all the Best Buy Exclusives (Van Helsing/DOTD). So any other question you want anwsered will help. I'll repost back when I return. I'm leaving at about 6pm and will check and print the questions then. I'll get as many awnsered as I can.

Sorry about the spelling errors I'm half awake and wish I would have posted this sooner.

i hope i don't get anyone upset or in trouble by reposting this in the other sections

The most obvious question I could think of is what plans to do they have for releasing the M.I.A. titles from the 1930's through 1960's. Movies like THE BLACK AT (1934), THE INVISIBLE RAY (1936), THE MAD GHOUL (1943), THE MONOLITH MONSTERS (1957), and even films previously issued to DVD by Image (i.e. KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN, etc). Gracias!

Pleazeeeee ask them where are the HAMMER titles they hold the rights to, which include:

BRIDES OF DRACULA
CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
KISS OF THE VAMPIRE
PARANOIAC
EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN

do they hold the rights to
MANIAC
NIGHTMARE
CAPTAIN CLEGG - THE NIGHT CREATURES
???

and of course the Universal classics not yet released on DVD: MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, THE RAVEN, THE BLACK CAT, THE INVISIBLE RAY, THE BLACK ROOM...

Thanks

Where are THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN and THIS ISLAND EARTH?
I'd like special editions please, maybe with a commentary by Tom Weaver.

MOBIUS HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE!!!

Like many, I am hopeful that Universal will turn their attention to their other classic horror films now that all of the monsters have been represented. I know Universal is milking Dracula, Frankenstein, and the rest as their Mickey Mouse cash cows, and I understand that. But I hope they won't forget the non-monster horrors such as THE BLACK CAT and THE RAVEN (which would make a perfect double feature). I'm also curious if they still own ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, as I'd love that one.
-Bill

PS: Welcome back everyone. The present day Mobius refuses to die.

I am most curious about THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, myself. It's the one outstanding SF movie of the 1950s that's not available on DVD so far. Well, that and CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN, of course.

Non-genre, but I'd love a CASINO Special Edition. Anyway, THE FRIGHTENERS is well overdue to have its LaserDisc special features resurrected on DVD.

Damn, looks like I missed out, I would've asked if region 1 would get a Dune SE though.

THE BLACK ROOM is owned by Columbia, I believe.

I'd like to see a Karloff/Lugosi Legacy Collection, featuring:

THE BLACK CAT
THE RAVEN
THE INVISIBLE RAY
MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE

OK, on to what I found out which sadly isn't much. First off I'll say their PR guy seemed like a nice guy but not very knowledgeable. Since I've been to this thing before I knew the basic format of it. His first statement was that he'd be taking questions later and he'd be surprised if anyone could stump him, which my guest openly laughed knowing the list of questions I'd brought with me, she had already taken advantage of the open bar, but that's another story. They showed a Theatrical feature trailer reel that started off with Shaun of the dead and ended with Seed Of Chucky talked about upcoming projects (Steven Sommers FLASH GORDON  possible Van Helsing sequels) ect. Then it was on to the war on piracy, HD vs BlueRay, Upcoming DVD releases, Finally TV DVD and questions.
Before I move on to questions and what they announced, I have to say that they made an honest statement I was very surprised to hear anyone associated with any studio openly say that the reason business has been down this year is due to the glut of bad movies coming out, but would only own up to CAT IN THE HAT which he apologized for since last year that was the big movie they where hyping.
He also talked about the ALIEN QUAD set when discussing DVD extras saying how it had 50 hours of extras and it was overkill and what shut in with no girlfriend had time to watch it. Which offended me and probley half the board, I've only watched 90% of the extras and I leave the house to buy DVD's ;) .When questions where asked I was the first one to ask I waited to see if anyone else was going to but like last year everyone there was more for the free food, drinks and promos.
I asked about LOST HIGHWAY and ORGAZMO which he responded "Do we even own those titles?" I told him yes they acquired them with Polygram. Well you can see where this is going, I asked about the rumored "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" seasons which were on their TV on DVD presentation hoping to get some news, but he said their isn't much of a demand for it and that it may have some rights issues holding it back. I stopped asking questions to let other people go but only one other person asked a question about blue ray vs HD. Then he stated that if any one else had questions they could come up an talk to him. Which I took him up on. Here is a breakdown of the questions.

Future Universal Monster Sets… Depending how this wave sells we’ll se more, if they do as good as the first wave

Psycho Sequels… possible for future Uni Monster set of their Franchise Collections

Psycho Sequels… ???

Polygram and October titles… ???

DOUBLE INDEMNITY ???

COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, CHARLEY VARRICK and ICEMAN will be released in pan & scan on DVD ???

Hammer Titles… ??? I let him know Uni’s the only studio still sitting on major Hammer titles and that there is interest.

You can see I got the company line on most questions, unknown or “rights issues”. I tried not to keep asking questions I knew he wouldn’t have an answer for but he said he’d email me the answers and if I didn’t here from him to call or email him. I gave him a copy of the questions and titles.

Here are a couple things that are coming I don’t know if it’s already been reported but here it goes.
SHAUN OF THE DEAD has changed street from 12/28 to 12/21
