Title: Best News of The Day SYNAPSE acquires THE DEPRAVED
Casey Scott - November 20, 2004 11:16 PM (GMT)
Man oh man, am I excited!! After begging, pleading, suggesting like crazy and dropping hints everywhere, Synapse has finally managed to buy the rights to Christina Lindberg's underrated exploitation classick THE DEPRAVED!
Fans of Lindberg will not want to miss this one. While THRILLER is her most popular film, her performance in THE DEPRAVED is similar and the film itself is an interesting counterpart to that famous revenge flick. This film jumps back and forth from Christina's fantasy to her reality, and by the shocking climax, the audience is never attuned to wether she has dreamt the whole film in her perverse imagination or she really did fall into the clutches of a filthy pornographer.
Don, I'm anxious to hear your plans for extras, but am most excited about this film being presented uncut, lookin' gorgeous and treated with the typical Synapse TLC...and a Christina Lindberg interview, please..... ;)

SWEET BABY JESUS!!!
This is just awesome.

Don May hates my wallet. Picked up The Deadly Spawn and Blue Sunshine SE at Best Buy this week...probably get the Fantasm films at some point too. Also Organ. And Stacy. And looking through the synapse catalog, like five others. My wallet is wincing with each new great sounding disc announced for next year. Sigh. It'd be disheartening if the discs weren't so great.
:D

i've had my fingers crossed for a DVD release of this one since i first witnessed the trailer on the GODSON/Below the Belt Something Weird disc!
Excellent news.

I really, REALLY hope one of those "other five" Synapse DVDs you're planning to buy is A BETTER PLACE :-)

I've been meaning to buy A BETTER PLACE forever, it sounds so damn good! Is it still in print, Vincent or did Synapse's license run out?
Henry Hopper - November 24, 2004 01:08 AM (GMT)
Still in print according Synapse's
site. :D

I know this is taking things way off the original topic, but I would move A BETTER PLACE further up my purchase list if I were you guys. It was one of those films that I bought 'blind'. Synapse had not released that many discs at that point, but I had liked what I had seen of their output. I seem to remember initial word about the disc sort of centering around the fact that it was a View Askew film, which I was totally naive to - I still haven't seen any of them (what's wrong with me?) - I was sold on it really by the description of the film alone - it sounded like it had great potential. I preordered the title at DVD Express (once a major player, now but a dim memory in the online DVD store hall of fame) - seems that is where Synapse was pointing people to for the pre-ordering at that point - with a promo that the first 1,000 discs (I think that was the number) included a certificate signed by the director and a couple of 16mm trims. I can't tell the story as well as those involved, but the disc took longer than expected to street, and during that time I believe DVD Express was in the process of folding and these preorders were cancelled. So - apparently these first 1,000 (or however many it was discs) were going to be shuffled over to Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash for preorders. I preordered again, and it was still a while before the disc was finally released, but it was every bit worth the wait.
In all honesty, I have never been as pleased with a blind purchase (for that matter, a blind purchase that I actually spent months anticipating receiving) as with A BETTER PLACE. I can't speak to anyone else's tastes - and the film does have it's detractors - but I really enjoyed it and it stands up well with repeated viewings for me. It's easily one of the top ten DVD's that I own (and I own quite a few from many a genre). I did get the 16mm trims, and kick myself repeatedly now for not having ordered the poster and soundtrack while the film's official site was still online. Again, sorry to have veered so far off-topic, and off European Cult Cinema altogether, but give A BETTER PLACE a chance guys. I doubt that you will be disappointed.
UPDATED: Just noticed that IFC is playing A BETTER PLACE a few times this month (including tomorrow night, 12/9) for those reluctant to buy thie disc without seeing the movie.(MSRP is only $19.95, though) - but without the disc you'l miss out on the commentary, the deleted scenes...and oh yeah, you won't get to tip The Pizza Guy. A great amount of effort went into making this disc happen from what I understand - so please support it if you enjoy the film. Sorry again about veering so far off topic, but I'm a big fan of this film and don't think that enough people have seen it.

I've got #16 of 1000 on the "A Better Place" LE.
Great movie IMHO, I've haven't watched it since I first got it, but bringing it up encouraged me to dig it out of my stacks of DVDs to check it out again.
I wonder if the director has a new project on the horizon? ;)

I know this isn't the forum to bring it up on Casey, but A BETTER PLACE is highly recommended. An excellent movie, IMHO. I just found out about the movie only about 6 months ago, and bought it. It was also shown on IFC last night.

Is this DVD still in the works?
I have the Swedish DVD but - no English subtitles or dub track.
Was there ever a US theatrical poster ever issued for The Depraved?
Don May Jr - June 20, 2008 12:05 AM (GMT)
Yep, we're working on it. Got a new interview with Christina that is different from the one on our MAID IN SWEDEN. We've just had more pressing licenses to get out. We've got more Lindberg on the way, too... we're just trying to space 'em out.
EXPOSED (aka THE DEPRAVED) is sitting on my desk right now, waiting for me to approve the transfer.
Marc Morris - June 20, 2008 12:30 AM (GMT)
Excellent news - thanks Don.
Incidentally, this got a UK cinema release as EXPOSED.
It's already out on UK DVD albeit with
12s of cuts.
John Bernhard - June 20, 2008 01:44 PM (GMT)
This is a tricky one as the English dubbed version is quite a bit shorter and it also changes the ending of the film. Ms. Lindberg may be at her most fetching in this one, so her fans really have something to look froward to.
I watched the Swedish DVD while I played my Alpha Blue VHS dub of THE DEPRAVED on a second monitor and listened to the english soundtrack, and really enjoyed the film. I had always assumed the American distributor imposed a phoney ending for the US, and this watch confirmed it.
I am wondering how Synapse will handle the different cuts, I'd like to see both versions on the DVD.
Marc, there was a US poster and I think I have a scan of it somewhere.
I'll check when I get home.
Casey Scott - June 20, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
Don, you may remember that I lent you a 45 RPM record with illustrated sleeve containing the two musical themes from the film. What ever became of this item? Will you be using it, and can I expect to get it back...?
Richard Harland Smith - June 21, 2008 12:03 AM (GMT)
(Don rushes to eBay to block further bidding.)

Isn't this more suited for a PM?

We licensed the film from the original Swedish producers and, as such, our version is the original Swedish version and does not contain an English dub. It's Swedish with removable English subtitles.
It's anamorphic widescreen and nicer looking than the Swedish DVD release.
John Bernhard - July 1, 2008 02:14 PM (GMT)
Well, that's great news as the Swedish dvd left lots of room for an upgrade.
I know I have a poster for THE DEPRAVED somewhere, but can;t find it.
Here is one that looks similar...maybe thsi was UK poster?
Marc Morris - July 1, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
Yes, that's the UK quad poster.
John Bernhard - July 1, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
I can remember the US poster ( Banned in 36 Countries! ) but can't find my scan of it. There may be one in the Psychotronic Encyclopedia......I'll look again.
Meanwhile, here is some random Christina hubba hubba to tide us over.

I've seen two different U.S. one-sheets for this as THE DEPRAVED -- the one below, and another with Lindberg handcuffed to a bed and being menaced by two men (this graphic shows up in the trailer also) and also the one below as DIARY OF A RAPE.

I wonder what's censored out on that
Depraved poster?

It looks like the usual Group 1 box that read "Banned in 27 countries! Now you can see it without a single cut!" Why this would be censored is anyone's guess.

Ebay doesn't allow the sale of any "banned" items and that image appears to be from an ebay sale. The seller most likely photoshopped out the banned box so that he could sell it there without it getting yanked.
Marc Morris - July 3, 2008 09:56 AM (GMT)
Does anybody have a better pic of that US THE DEPRAVED poster?
Chris Barry - July 17, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
I love the tagline:
"...NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH OR THE EASILY EMBARRASSED..."
