Title: Dagored DVDs

Lon Huber - August 22, 2005 11:57 PM (GMT)
I'm sure Mobians are aware that Dagored, whose CDs we love, has some DVDs out, but CRIMES OF THE BLACK CAT seems to have a bad transfer according to the one review I've found online, making me wary of ordering their other titles. Has anyone seen THE SENATOR LIKES WOMEN or MILANO ROVENTE?

I've seen MILANO ROVENTE and here is what I wrote about the disc in an review posted here a few months back:

The MILANO ROVENTE disc actually looks pretty good. If you are expecting something along the lines of Alan Young Pictures or Media Blasters, then prepare to be disappointed. It isn't that nice. The image is letterboxed at roughly 1.85:1. I'm not sure if that is the correct ratio (Lenzi tended to shoot most stuff 2.35:1 then) but it doesn't look like much is missing. The colors are nice and there is minimal print damage. It is a decent transfer that suffers in darker scenes. Still, I found it very easy to watch. The only problem may be the subtitles which are extrodinarily small in some instances. The extras include a photo gallery and trailers. The trailers are in awful shape and I hope their upcoming transfers don't look that bad.

i totally agree with what William wrote about the MILANO ROVENTE disc! It looks better than the CRIMES disc but still far from perfect. And certainly inferior than the releases of Allan Young Pictures. and yes, the subs are hard to read and the trailers are mastered from VHS too. so is their new disc of 7 DEATHS IN THE CAT'S EYE.

It is a real shame that Dagored messed up the CRIMES disc... It looks as if it was mastered from VHS. It was a major let-down for me as I was expecting an upgrade to my Greek VHS of the movie for years. This is definitely not an upgrade.

Entering the DVD business and earning a good reputation among fans is hard for a company to achieve. especially when they make a start with such a bad product.

Is the 7 Deaths In A Cat's Eye disc cropped? I have the horribly butchered video & was really looking forward to an uncropped dvd. Wide screen would at least suffice for me even if not masered from negatives or something like that.

I was considering this release too, but the news that Blue Underground will be releasing their version in October has prompted me to hold out for it instead.

I was hoping that Dagored would at least use the anamorphic master prepared for the Japanese DVD since it was available but that does not seem to be the case. Xploited carried it for a few days but it does not seem to be listed at the site anymore (they noted that it was not of the best quality).

I'd say go for the BU disc (one of many releases coming out on October 25).
