Title: Is Synapse to release SECERTS OF SEX?
Chris Neill - November 8, 2004 04:57 PM (GMT)
A question for Don,
I read recently in Videoscope (I think) that Antony Balch's SECRETS OF SEX, plus two shorts he made with William Burroughs, would be coming out through Synapse at some stage. Can you make any comment on this? However, this DVD release is not (to my knowledge) mentioned on your website. I would LOVE to see the two shorts, at least one of which, THE CUT-UPS, apparently inspired Nicolas Roeg prior to him being a director himself.
Thanks in advance.

Various Antony Balch shorts have been issued on VHS by, I think, Mystic Eye Video.

Yep, we sure are putting it out!
SOS will be released early 2005 and we are finishing up audio work right now, then it's off to authoring (maybe in a week or so).
We do have THE CUT-UPs and TOWERS OPEN FIRE (oopsie... fixed) on the disc, as well as the longer international version of the film (in the US, there was a sequence removed that had someone putting a phone receiver in a... ahem... "bad place".
We received original vault materials and the transfer is pretty awesome.

That's TOWERS OPEN FIRE, Don.
Kinda look fwd to the opportunity of seeing SOS again, though my memories of it from a VHS rental 20 years ago are not ones of a good film.

Actually, it's TOWERS OPEN FIRE (without the OPEN being italicized). :)
SECRETS OF SEX isn't a good film... it's a great one. Gotta love that "Rod Serling" talking mummy and that crazy "crotch tearing" torture machine.

Don:
Not that TOWERS OPEN FIRE and THE CUT-UPS aren't enough -- love Burroughs' cut-up phase, completely surreal --, but are other extras, if you know yet, going to be included on the SECRETS OF SEX DVD?
Not that I wouldn't scarf it up otherwise!
Thanks, in advance

We have an audio commentary and a small interview featurette put together by Scooter McCrae. Also, there is a theatrical trailer (or two... maybe).

This is great news, Don!
Can you tell us who is doing the audio commentary?
Again, thanks in advance!
Can't wait for this release.
