I remember on the "classic" MHVF forum, I posted a question about which horror & sci-fi films provoke even the toughest, manliest fans to shed a tear or two. It was an awesome thread, and was very revealing and interesting to see what films provoked such emotions.
New question: have you ever cried at an exploitation film? Granted, not many of them invest so muc emotion in the characters and their well-being, but some really tug at the heartstrings. Here are some films I've viewed which have caused me to burst into tears (well...not burst, but quietly allow a few trickles down my cheek):
!!SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY!!
TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN - The devastating ending with poor Marcia Forbes being rejected by her father and left alone in the world. Hands-down one of the best performances in a low-budget film from the 1970s; in fact, the entire cast, crew, and film itself deserve another look from everyone!!
KILL BILL VOL. 2 - Don't know if this counts as exploitation, but the brilliant NAVAJO JOE score by Ennio Morricone swelling as David Carradine gets up to walk to his death always gets me bawling.
REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS - This is one of the funniest, craziest cult flicks ever shot, but the bittersweet ending of Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith cradling her newborn son and waving to the camera is made all the more tragic after her early passing in 2002. I can't watch past the credits anymore...
COFFY - Pam Grier realizing the love of her life is the villain, and her tearful confrontation with him at the climax. The violence is surprising, but Grier's brutally honest performance is a good one.
THE CRAZIES - Lynn Lowry being shot by the military men, and the subsequent. Actually, Romero's brought me to tears several other times: Barbara being dragged out of the house by her zombified brother in NOTLD and when Roger had to be shot in DAWN.
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW - Tim Curry's "I'm Going Home" number is beautifully shot, and after all the insanity, is quite moving.
TRASH - Holly Woodlawn's incredible confrontation with Joe Dallesandro after she finds him having sex with her pregnant sister. Sounds goofy and silly in description, but Woodlawn sells the scene.
SATAN'S SADISTS - Regina Carroll's suicide jump over a cliff. It wouldn't be so sad if Regina wasn't really deceased...
SWITCHBLADE SISTERS - Robbie Lee's high-pitched voice should keep these scenes less-than-dramatic, but I always well up when Dominic is shot down in the roller rink, and when Joanne Nail is forced to kill her in a switchblade fight.
THE HILLS HAVE EYES - The trailer invasion always gets me.
DEATHDREAM - The mother is forced to bury her living dead son.
LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT - Mari's suicide/murder after being brutally raped by David Hess. Hess' moving score helps in this scene.
SPIDER BABY - Lon Chaney, Jr.'s speech as he realizes he has to kill the children.
OK, 'fess up. No one will call you a sissy
not cry, but made ME depressed
