Title: Fox / Fortune Star DVDs
Description: Should I stay or should I go....

Hello,

I have heard a few things about the Fox / Fortune Star releases and was wondering if I would be better off with the laser disc versions of some of them. I was particularly curious about items like City Hunter, Eastern Condors, Duel to the Death and the Prodigal Son. I have the older MEGA STAR DVD of City Hunter and the domestic laser discs from Tai Seng of the rest. I have heard that the older Fox discs are all dubtitled. If you were me which would be the best to have?

Thanks!!

The remastered Fox titles you mentioned (plus the R3 Bruce Lee Ultimate DVD Collection and Police Story Trilogy [trilogy?]) look great! All are uncut except for NAKED KILLER. They are the correct aspect ratio, enhanced for 16:9 TVs, look sharper and (mostly) have better color saturation and contrast. Some newer titles include a dts track. I do not know if the subtitles are dubtitles or not. Sorry.

As I have the old Mega Star DVDs of these titles as well, I did some one to one comparisons on select titles - namely the Bruce Lee titles. I will give the completely uninformed opinion that the same source prints or masters were used before a digital cleanup was done. They look remarkably similar, except of course, for the 16:9 enhancement.

I am very impressed with the Fox titles. So much so, that I will be more careful of purchasing from the Hong Kong Legends line unless there is some special feature that I want. The Fox DVDs include a few trailers but are otherwise are extra-free.

Thanks for the info Phil. I got the latest wave of Fox / Fortune Stars (Knockabout, Iron Fisted Monk, Battlecreek Brawl, Postman Fights Back, Mr. Vampire) and really enjoy them. These were nice because they included the original mono tracks. Dubtitles kind of bother me and I have been trying to find out for sure if the older ones were in fact dubtitles.
