RUNNING ON KARMA
(Hong Kong 2003, 93 min)
[Dir: Johnnie To, Wai Ka-Fai
Cast: Andy Lau, Cecilia Cheung]

Our 3rd Annual Midnight@Sunset (MAS) comes with a twist.
We're casting aside our brain-bludgeoning ways to salute
one of our favorite actors, Andy Lau Tak-Wah (House of Flying
Daggers, Infernal Affairs), in the L.A. premiere of the award-winning
film, Running On Karma, directed by—of course—Johnnie To.

For over a decade, Andy has enjoyed unprecedented fame and
is considered to be one of the most successful and adored
singer/actor in Asia. He has made over 118 films and 116 albums,
most of them going multi-platinum. In 2003 Lau won his second
Best Actor award for his physically and emotionally demanding
role as “Biggie,” in Running On Karma, a monk cursed
with the ability to foresee the fates of those around him.
When Lau meets rookie cop Cecilia Cheung during a botched
police raid, he’s forced out of his self-imposed exile to help her
find a dangerous killer in the hopes of altering her karmic debt.
Don't let the body suit fool you...Running On Karma is action-packed,
brutal and emotionally complex. That’s why we’re showing it twice :-)

Come join us for a rare treat to see a film that normally wouldn't get
past the mainstream police. Be sure to bring a friend who likes to think.

I'm still not quite sure if I think this is a good film - I'm really not a fan of Johnnie To in general - but it certainly is a fairly compelling viewing and should be seen purely for Lau's muscle suit ... it's not bad for latex, but it's definitely latex. The do the entire film with this very obvious, distracting, and weirdly rivetting effect purely so they can have a single shot at the end where Lau's character has lost a ton of mass ... one of the strangest production choices ever ...
