Brilliant in movies like ANATOMY OF A MURDER--a cast packed with aces--he kept his cool no matter what the circumstance, and the likes of BLOODLINE and THE NEPTUNE FACTOR were pretty dire circumstances. Excellent in THE STRANGE ONE (his film debut), the Cassavetes pictures, SAINT JACK (maybe my favorite performance of his), QB VII on TV, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, way over the top in ROAD HOUSE...I saw him on Broadway in 2005 in AWAKE AND SING!, opposite Mark Ruffalo and Lauren Ambrose, on NY Film Festival panels for HAPPINESS and DOGVILLE, and walking his poodle on 86th and 3rd in Manhattan. RIP. (He doesn't seem to have worked with the late Zalman King.)

I can't believe I forgot about QB VII. I just saw it in 2010, and it's a stunning work the likes of which you'll never see on network television again? Can you imagine a television network of today assembling a cast like QB VII's and traveling around the work to shoot an important literary work about the Holocaust?

I love ANATOMY OF A MURDER (it's better than the book). I don't know how many dozens of times I've seen ROAD HOUSE, and when I saw it screened at B-Fest last weekend, well, I wish I had known how sick he was, so I could have shouted a bravo at the screen.
