Title: Profondo Rosso new UK release

Tim Rogerson - February 16, 2005 01:39 PM (GMT)
I spotted a new UK DVD release of Profondo Rosso today. It contains both the long Italian version and the shorter UK version. Plus an Argento interview and trailer.

Has anyone seen this and can comment (eg: aspect ratio; end credits status) as I may buy - the BBFC website posts the longer version on its website with a "some previous cuts waived" comment but then also, confusingly, says it has been passed with no cuts. But shorter version not on there.

thanks

It's just a re-release by Platinum Media.

Re-release of what? I'm intrigued that Tim reports that it contains the shorter "international" cut of DEEP RED as well as the long PROFONDO ROSSO cut. I thought only the Spanish release of DEEP RED was the shorter cut, I never realzed it was also released on DVD in the U.K.

I had no idea the shorter version was out here either... Is it 'uncut' (other than the dialogue cuts) and in the correct ratio? I would doubt it myself given that the cuts were legally binding under UK law (animal cruelty). Which leads me to beg any non-UK DVD company out there likely to plan a DEEP RED re-issue to PLEASE put out this shorter version, which I myself prefer, in the right ratio, unlike the Spanish disc which is cropped to 1.85:1, and with the correct opening and closing credits.

Yeah, I saw this in-store today. My initial excitement (it's a lovely sleeve IMHO) was quickly dampened though.

Firstly, it has indeed got both versions on it. As I'd posted many times here, my perfect edition would include both versions; one in Italian and complete; the other shorter and entirely in English; both with their correct end and beginning title sequences. I don't enjoy the language switching of the AB version and I hate those tampered-with end-credits.

So what's the problem? Well I can't speak about the integrity of the print, but I presume it still cuts the lizard pinning scene as per earlier UK DVD's. The main problem is that it has both versions on a single disc. I can't even tell you if it's a branching disc (which would minimise compression) because the trendy cover is surprisingly lame when it comes to technical data. It says something like (and i'm paraphrasing here from memory):

ITALIAN COMPLETE EDITION: 123 mins: Dolby 5.1 Sound.
ENGLISH INTERNATIONAL EDITION: xx mins: Full Screen.

Essentially, it tells me nothing about the AR of either version. I'm guessing this is not the definitive edition i've been waiting for.

Victor.
