Title: any more Borowczyk DVDs?

Eric Cotenas - February 13, 2005 11:10 AM (GMT)
I've finally gotten around to seeing some Walerian Borowczyk films. I've seen LOVE RITES (the Pagan DVD), THE BEAST (Cult Epics 3-disc set) as well as horrible quality versions of ART OF LOVE and DR. JEKYLL'S WOMEN. Can anyone recommend any other titles? Also, are the latter two titles going to recieve the DVD treatment anytime soon?

Also, what else has Marina Pierro done besides the three Borowczyk films and Rollin's LIVING DEAD GIRL?

Here's a link to Borowczyk's DVD releases at Mondo Erotico.

I own the 3 DVD SE of THE BEAST and ABE's IMMORAL TALES.

Is someone going to do right by the director's truly excellent BLANCHE?

There was a now OOP tape from the UK a decade ago, and then nothing, so it seems.

Films like this suffer by not being sleazy enough. Walerian should have been foresighted enough to know that mere "masterpieces" comparable to the best of Cocteau and Polanski have shorter rerelease lives than WIP.

It galls me sometimes that this is true. I saw this when it was new, and was knocked out by it. It's totally unsung now.

Is there a release in the works or out there that I've overlooked?

Cult Epics have BLANCHE, GOTO: ISLAND OF LOVE and RITES OF PASSION (LOVE RITES) on the way.

Sounds good. How's their track record?

James, I forgot to note how much I love BLANCHE in my post. Thanks for mentioning this yet, as far as I know, unreleased masterpiece on DVD.

Anyway, Cult Epics did a great job on their 3 disc SE of LA BETE, so I'm definitely looking forward to their upcoming Borowczyk releases.

I can't wait to see what Cult Epics does with LOVE RITES. I have the Pagan DVD and would like to see how a new transfer looks (preferably with optional subs).

This is the golden era of cult dvd distributors taking on quixotic ventures! God bless 'em! And buy 'em while you can! We may not get a glut of such variety done so well for some time to come.

And glad to hear there's at least one more BLANCHE fan on board. When it's released ,though, further discussion may get relegated to the Arthouse board, as it's more that sort of film (though definitely on the further edges: a sinister fairy tale, but closer to Walerian's Eastern European animation roots than most of what he's done since: I remember the labyrinthine full of rooms of inexplicable retro-futuristic medieval machinery getting wandered in by suitors caught in a fateful maze, but also really strong performances by the likes of very old Michel Simon and young Jacques Perrin and the guy who played Captain Haddock in a Tintin movie I'd seen as the king. I can't wait to see this again)
