Description: Media Blasters Prepping Special Edition

Media Blasters is working on a special edition DVD of Jun Fukuda's GODZILLA VS. MEGALON (1973). Read more about it at my blog:

My heart skips a beat.
I have nothing to add but to say this is great news, provided it doesn't fall apart for any of the usual reasons. I'd sort of worried that this film was never going to get a proper disc on account of the, um, strong opinions people have about it. I cannot unpeel the many layers of happiness it would bring me if GODZILLA VS. MEGALON were somehow the first Godzilla sequel to hit US Blu-ray.

Sci-Fi Japan is now running a story that says the MEGALON DVD was never happening. This is curious, because my source claims there were active inquiries asking for participating in providing materials for a proposed set of special features, and that an audio commentary was mentioned. While I was asked to keep my source's identity under wraps, I do have a e-mails which are contrary.

Was my source mistaken? Did those who sought the participation of my source lie? Was this an "elaborate hoax"? Or was this done to make me look silly? I certainly don't feel silly, nor angry, embarrassed, or remotely upset. But, I do find this pretty insidiously funny, actually. "Sh*t happens", as they say. Now, whatever the case may be, I'm sure that it will "all come out in the wash". Surprisingly, this poor-man's soap opera actually has become far more interesting that the original subject of the story...

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines!

The sadness begins. Not to stoke the fires, but this is obviously a conspiracy to suppress the film because of the scene where Godzilla and Megalon fight on top of the World Trade Center.

Perhaps it is time to acquire the Australian disc.

Not breaking news at this point, but:
Media Blasters release of MEGALON & DESTROY ALL MONSTERS!

MEGALON arrives on November 29. DESTROY ALL MONSTERS! still doesn't have a release date that I've heard.

Rob Peace - August 10, 2011 04:20 PM (GMT)
DVD Empire and CD Universe have DESTROY ALL MONSTERS up for preorder with an October 25 street date. No retailer seems to have MEGALON info yet.

Ah ha! The Media Blasters Facebook page (apparently the best news source for the company?) confirms:

DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (with AIP dub "definitely" included): Sept 27

Chris, odd as it may sound the Media Blasters FB page may not be the best source for news on the Godzilla releases because the guys answering fan questions on Facebook are not the guys directly working on the discs.

Carl Morano, the producer of the Godzilla discs, emailed me this morning to say the Facebook posting "got the dates wrong". So DAM is still 10/25, and MEGALON is 11/29 as previously announced.

You know, it occurs to me belatedly that Media Blasters can not correctly master a Blu-ray to save their life. Sorry if that is a rude thing to say, but it will be sad if/when these turn out to be botch jobs. Fingers crossed, though.

Well, as it turns out, the Media Blasters DESTROY ALL MONSTERS is a very nice disc, the presentation blows the previous ADV DVD out of the water, and the company has done well by this much-loved title. In and of itself, this is not an eye-popping Blu, but stacked against prior home video history and paired with a fine Ryfle & Godziszewski commentary, it is a more than worthy upgrade.

There are rumblings that Toho is displeased with some (surely inconsequential) something-or-other, is holding up the MEGALON release, and may be unhappy about the DESTROY ALL MONSTERS disc. I can't speak to the veracity of that, but if (if!) it means they may request a recall of D.A.M., pick it up while you can.
UPDATE: Actually I just looked at the Media Blasters FB page. They're openly telling customers that Toho was unhappy with the bonus content on MEGALON and D.A.M. both, which is stalling MEGALON and reorders of D.A.M.

This used to be my favorite giant monster picture, due to the high number of kaiju on display. I still like it a lot, but after spending some quality time with every Showa Godzilla this year, I think it is sort of second tier. [*** SPOILERSY FROM HERE ON ***] There are a couple of excellent group combat sequences, and a great image of Gorosaurus demolishing the Arc de Triomphe. I love the evil Kilaak aliens calling in Ghidorah like a one-beast last-resort death squad, and the final act in which the subjugated Earth kaiju throw off their mind-control shackles and fight for their home planet of their own free will. That's all rousing stuff, but in the end lots of monsters appear and/or are name-checked, but most of them don't do anything. It's not as imaginative and beautiful as MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA, outré as HEDORAH, or berserk as a GAMERA sequel (but then again, what is?). I still think it's super neat and it packs a nostalgic charge, it's just not the Godzilla to End All Godzillas.
