Description: Has anyone had a chance to see any yet?

I'll probably by scooping them all up and Connie Chan's For Better, For Worse will be the first. Heck, I was getting that one even before English subs were confirmed.

Hopefully, no technical glitches like the first batch because the picture quality was great on my humble set up. The original films looked to be the creme de la creme of Cathay's vault but I think there were a few Wong Tin Lam directed films in the new batch weren't there?

(Hi Dennis!) I just saw FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE last weekend. It's quite good. Helen Li Mei plays a widow who remarries and must suffer the superstitious prejudice of her new wicked sister-in-law, who believes that marrying a widow brings bad luck. Connie Chan is great as Li Mei's daughter. The film is well-scripted with good performances from many Cathay regulars. And there's some interesting location shooting too. The print quality and DVD transfer is very good.

I'm definitely picking up DEATH TRAPS (also starring Li Mei and directed by Wong Tin Lam), but I'm waiting on DEVOTION until someone else reports on it—but if no one does, I'll probably pick it up sooner or later.

I'm very happy to see the Cathay films being released again. There are still quite a few that I'm dying to see: the Cantonese films, more Li Mei, SISTER LONG LEGS, YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME (with Kitty Ting Hao in a cross-dressing love triangle), and a couple more Grace Chang films too.

Ooooh, like I needed more incentive! You're throwing a carcass to a hyena, now. Death Traps looks juicy doesn't? Not familiar with Helen Li Mei but I'm looking forward to seeing her. Thanks, and Mr Visa thanks you.

(David, just got the reissue of The Goddess, but it's ITP -- in the pile. Good to hear from you again, hope all is well with you.)

Well, if you're not familiar with Li Mei, then you definitely need to get BETWEEN TEARS AND LAUGHTER. It's one of my favorite Cathay films thanks to the strong performances of Li Mei, Wang Lai, and Ting Hao as three women who share an apartment. If you need more encouragement, read the review at YesAsia, which accurately praises the film far better than I can.

(I picked up the Goddess DVD as well. Hopefully, it will lead the way for more DVD releases of Chinese silent films.)

As if I need any encouragement. :D Now I remember your previous recommendation for this film. One of the few from Cathay Round 1 that I didn't pick up at some point, that, and one of the two parters (THE STORY OF THREE LOVES). It's on my radar now.
