Title: 5 Dead On The Crimson Canvas
Description: Thoughts, anyone?

I see that this just came out on DVD and have never had the opportunity to see it. I did a bit of research and see it was winner of the 1996 Fantafestival and won the 1997 Cinemafantastique magazines "Best Outlaw Video Award".

While awards mean little to me as far as the merits and quality of a film, what does interest me is that it is purportedly an homage to the vintage era of the Giallo. That does get my attention.

I would really appreciate anyone's opinions on this film.

It's OK viewing, but nothing too compelling. The guy who directed it worked at a Laser Land (now closed) on Long Island where I did the majority of my laser disc purchasing in the 90s...he does truly love the giallo film and has exhaustive knowledge, and the film's ambitions and intent are admirable, but it had a lot of talky interior scenes that weren't particulary compelling or well-acted. The film is kind of long, too, as I remember...it has its moments, and some interesting stuff happens towards the end, and I believe the dvd has a commentary, which may be interesting (again, he knows his stuff), but I would say one viewing is enough, which may preclude a purchase on your part.

I saw it about 10 years ago and thought it was awful.

I remember reading a review of the film that basically went "Imagine if Doris Wishman directed DEEP RED." I think that pretty much sums it up...
