Title: Wonderful MARK OF THE VAMPIRE trailer!

Ian McDowell - October 20, 2009 05:01 PM (GMT)
In honor of Bela's birthday, here's the trailer for the Todd Browning film, which I'd never seen before today (the trailer, not the film). It's great (again, the trailer, not the film), with wonderful narration by Lugosi himself, thus giving him far more dialogue than he has in the actual movie.

Do I really need to post SPOILER before mentioning the film's plot? Scroll down.

It really is a shame it's such a Scooby Doo style cheat, as it's more atmospheric and much more imaginatively shot than DRACULA. And with much better special effects. The bats are great, and the first time I saw it, some years ago, I was really surprised by the shots of Caroll Borland flapping around on bat wings (she can be seen doing this at the beginning of the trailer). It's ironic that the Lugosi vampire film with the best bat and flying effects should be the one in which the "vampires' are revealed as mere actors.

Thanks for posting this! I agree with you about MARK OF THE VAMPIRE, but it was basically remake of the still-lost Lon Chaney vehicle, LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1922), directed by Tod Browning.

"Basically?" It was emphatically and absolutely a remake of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. What's your point?

In honor of Lugosi's birthday, the only picture I have of him in my Flickr account:

I believe it's from THE INVISIBLE GHOST.

Oh, I know all about LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, but we can't see it and it's not a Lugosi film, so it's irrelevant to my probably poorly expressed point, which is that it's ironic that the Lugosi vampire film with the most impressive special effects depicting the vampire's supernatural powers is also the one in which he's not a real vampire.

How did they do Luna's flying effect, anyway? There are a couple of brief shots where it almost looks like stop motion (no doubt this is exacerbated by watching it on YouTube).

Bob is it really necessary to be so caustic? What was the point of that?

I may be wrong, but I think August was just saying that Mark is following London's playbook and the blame for any resulting scooby-doo-doos partly rests at London's door. :)

I have been summoned.

But I don't know what theater to go to!!!!

Guess I'll have to put on my old laserdisc.

Thanks for this, Ian.
