Title: THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
Description: old school horror for Halloween

Even though Boris Karloff has long ago left us and the absence still aches... it's wonderful to have guys like Tom Noonan around to help take the sting out of it. Here's the trailer page for the upcoming The House Of The Devil, which looks like a perfect 70s-early 80s throwback starring Noonan and Mary Woronov as couple straight out of the fevered imaginations of Charles Addams and Weird Tales. They invite a pair of babysitters to their creepy old house and... oh hell, just click the link! And check out the retro poster with the painted artwork too. This looks like the movie guys like Rob Zombie keep promising but never delivering. I'm sold. It's available through Video On Demand this month and opening in a couple cities on Friday, October 30th.

Just thought I'd bump this thread with the limited theatrical release this weekend. It's showing here in NYC at the Angelika and I plan on checking it out soon. Is it showing near anyone else? Or has anyone seen it through On Demand?

Drew McWeeny liked it.

Devin Faraci didn't.

I recorded it yesterday off one of the hi-def cable stations--either HDNet Movies or Universal HD--so I hope to watch it this weekend.

Well, goddamn but that was intense! A perfect way to cap off my Halloween weekend. As many critics observed, The House Of The Devil deals with slow-burn suspense, deliberately building the creepy atmosphere and dread without much happening for most of the film. This approach could have been a disaster, but it worked for me. Jocelin Donahue was a little bland in the lead role, but her angelic beauty has not a single angle the camera doesn't love. And she more or less pulls off the classic 70s babysitter horror heroine schtick. Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov are priceless, making the most of every word, every gesture, every moment. Great use of photography, music, and retro/Grindhouse-style opening credits. There was a nice little burst of applause from the Angelika crowd at the end.

Recommended. This may give Drag Me To Hell competition for my favorite horror movie of the year.

I'll take Drew McWeeney's opinion over Devin Faraci's any day.

When is this due on DVD? Looks great.

HOUSE OF THE DEVIL DVD plans

CDWow has it listed for February 2nd. And it's still available VOD.

I'm seeing that this beat the pants off of the much overhyped PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. 58 on Boxoffice Mojo's charts, but the on screen average at 3 theaters was 8,358 per screen compared to PA's 2404 screens at 6817 per screen. Not too shabby.

Here's a GreenCine Daily Podcast interview with Noonan where he talks about the film:

QUOTE
Sitting down with Mr. Ulman himself in what sounds halfway through our podcast as if it might actually be Satan's homestead, Noonan and I spoke about his dramatic workshops, being naturally creepy, why he never reads the whole script, and anecdotal remembrances of working with John Cassavetes, Michael Mann, and Michael Cimino—"just a terrible human being."

Thanks for that great interview. The stuff about Heaven's Gate made my eyes bug out a bit, especially in light of recent discussions on who's to blame for the Twilight Zone crash (over at the Landis Burke & Hare thread). How do these crazy bastards keep getting hired?

Also loved that bit about Noonan and Mann just sitting in the dark together all the time.
