Title: BLACK EMANUELLE Boxset from AB

David Huber - October 26, 2004 02:38 AM (GMT)
According to Fangoria.com, Anchor Bay will be releasing a BLACK EMANUELLE boxed set, including the first film, in the Fall of 2005. No other info on which films will be included or what supplements, but I'll definitely be picking this up, as I'm a huge Laura Gemser fan.

Awesome news!! I am anxious to update my Russian EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD disc, with its burned-on Russian subs and not-so-hot video quality. Is it safe to assume that the BLACK EMANUELLE box will include the original plus all the remaining D'Amato entries?

A great bonus to the box would be the complete documentary JOE D'AMATO: TOTALLY UNCUT; snippets of it appeared on BU's EMANUELLE IN AMERICA disc, and the whole thing is incredibly informative.

The Fangoria scoop does mention that the original will be included, but the wealth of possible 'Emanuelle' and faux-'Emanuelle' titles after that is dizzying. Many 'Emanuelle' movies are really not, and the multiple titles of some of them are confusing! I'm also wondering if AB will include the hardcore inserts for BLACK EMANUELLE; they don't have a history of doing this because that eliminates Best Buy as a sales outlet, but with BU, Synapse and Media Blasters sticking hardcore inserts in, I wonder if AB will follow suit? For the record, I don't like hardcore and would actually prefer the soft-porn versions, but perhaps they could offer multiple versions like MB did with EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Wait a minute...There is dreadful sound on the supplied 'remixed' Masters. Let's hope/protest that they include the original mono mixes, as opposed to the awful remixed stuff that I have heard on 'Black Emanuelle Goes East' and 'The Degradation Of Emanuelle'. I haven't heard the remix of 'Emanuelle And The White Slave Trade' yet, it is on my 'to do next' pile when I get around to it.

Casey - the subs are not burnt in on that Russian DVD, they can be de-selected on the right DVD players. It is a dual layer disc, and the colour grading is a bit off. I have amended it to green +8, blue + 15, and brightness +3 on that Master.

You could also include the 'variant' of 'Eva Nera/Black Cobra' known as 'Porno Esotic Love' (available on Greek VHS' in English); Emanuelle And The Porno Nights (available on Australian VHS) a sort of night club review, and I believe there is also a volume 2? Are there some others please?

I actually posted a list on dvdmaniacs message board, which I cut-and-pasted here, trying to make some sense as to what is or isn't considered a 'Black Emanuelle' movie. Perhaps a Mobian would like to amend or correct this?

...many Gemser films were retitled EMANUELLE AND [insert here] just to capitalize on the series' success, even though Emanuelle is nowhere to be found. Some of the legit ones are:
BLACK EMANUELLE
EMANUELLE IN BANGKOK
EMANUELLE IN AMERICA (already out from BU, so this won't be in AB's set)
EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD aka DEGRADATION OF EMANUELLE
EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS (already out from Media Blasters)
EMANUELLE AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE

I'm not sure about EMANUELLE'S DAUGHTER, EMANUELLE IN PRISON, and VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON as I haven't seen them; some definitely non-Emanuelle movies that exploit the title are EMANUELLE ON TABOO ISLAND, EMANUELLE IN THE COUNTRY, EMANUELLE IN EGYPT, and EMANUELLE QUEEN OF THE DESERT, and BLACK COBRA, which I've heard sometimes has the title EMANUELLE IN JAPAN or EMANUELLE GOES JAPANESE.

Also, there is a legit BLACK EMANUELLE 2 that does not star Laura Gemser. Plus all of the above films have multiple titles, some of them 6-7 distinctly different ones. I'm very curious as to which ones actually make it to the AB set!

Andrew, I believe Porno Esotic Love (which is a fabulously sleazy title, by the way) is an entry in D'Amato's caribbean serie, which makes it more of a variant of Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, than of Eva Nera, or the Black Emanuelle serie.

Other carribean titles are: Porno Holocaust, Voodoo Baby, Papaya and Sesso Nero, and probabably a few more. Some of these films are hardcore, others aren't - can't remember whether PEL is, or not.

Also, all (?) of the mentioned films are out on italian DVD (Legit? I don't know, haven't got them).

Now, do we need a boxset of the carribean films? Not really... or?

Casey Scott - October 31, 2004 10:08 PM (GMT)
Hell yes we need a boxed set of D'Amato's Caribbean films!! PAPAYA hasn't shown up uncut in English or with subs, as far as I know, and I would like a good English dub/sub of PORNO HOLOCAUST and SESSO NERO, too. All of them are atmospheric good fun, even though the sex is strictly by the numbers.

I would love an AB representative to at least leak a few of the titles that will be in the EMANUELLE box. Ideally, they would all be Gemser titles and not any cash-ins or unrelated titles. I.e., EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD, EMANUELLE AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE, EMANUELLE IN BANGKOK, BLACK EMANUELLE.

Yeah, we need all the D'Amato we can get on region one. It's been slim pickins thus far. We still don't even have a decent GRIM REAPER (I didn't feel like spelling the proper title) disc.

I would mind seeing a D'Amato/Siffredi box set either. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Posted from the Anchor Bay Web site: "First there was Sylvia Kristel, then there was the lovely Laura Gemser who took the role of Emanuelle to a whole new level in a series of films that have rocked the erotic all around the world. This collection includes three of Ms. Gemser's most popular forays in the character: the original BLACK EMANUELLE (1975) and two sequels directed by legendary cult filmmaker Joe D'Amato; EMANUELLE IN BANGKOK (1976) and EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD (1977) Look for these restored classics in the Fall of 2005"

I know I'm looking forward to these...I just wish they out now! I'm doing a doctoral disseration on european exploitation from 1964 to 1980 from my Ph.D dissertation at the University of Florida and this semester I'm looking at the gender and race representations between "white" Emmanuelle <sylvia kristel> and Black Emanuelle....it's been very interesting research so far....pristine transfers and extras would have been a blessing.

Danny,

Don't know what the restrictions are going to be on distribution/publication of your disseration, but I'd (and I'm sure others) would be thrilled to see it in print. Keep us in mind when you finish. Congrats!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'm lucky that I have a great subject that continually keeps me fascinated. As for the publishing, my inital thought was to write it academically (lots of theory etc.) to please my committee and when finished, re-edit to make it a more of a popular culture book (which pleases me more). I'll have a better grasp on what I want to do when I finish my quals. As for Mobius, I could never forget you, the website and the people who inhabit it are a major source of inspiration.

Lars Erik Holmquist - November 13, 2004 11:45 AM (GMT)
You should at least make the dissertation available for download as PDF and post a note on Mobius - I can't imagine any university opposing to that!

I'm happy to have my Ph.D. (in a non-Mobius-related subject) far behind me and it was a good experience to do it. Good luck writing and congratulations on choosing a subject that I'm sure allows you to get the school to fork out for lots of interesting "reference materials"... ahem... ;-)

Danny Shipka - November 14, 2004 02:43 PM (GMT)
The University now mandates electronic copies for all dissertations. It would be my pleasure to post it (when finished of course! -smile-) for everyone.

Would also be good to see the other two Gemser BLACK EMANUELLE related DVDs of LOVE CAMP (even just for the Christian Anders songs alone!) - and SEXY MOON a.k.a. EMANUELLE QUEEN OF SADOS, released in the same box set.

That would make a great sounding set into an AWESOME sounding set.

David Huber - November 20, 2004 07:37 PM (GMT)
I just recently watched LOVE CAMP, and it was one of the most ridiculously entertaining movies I've seen in a while. The whole movie was a camp masterpiece, with a budget about as big as a Happy Meal. And those songs...I was singing "Let me be your guide in the loving land of love!" for days afterward! Throw in a cleaned-up DVD of EVA NERA aka BLACK COBRA along with SEXY MOON and you've got another great Gemser box set there, Kit.

Kit Gavin - November 20, 2004 08:30 PM (GMT)
I completely forgot about EVA NERA/BLACK COBRA. I couldn't agree more...

As for the songs in LOVE CAMP, David, you won't be singing them for days afterward, it will be YEARS. Trust me, I still do from time to ti me in the shower, and it's been over 5 years since last I watched the film (!!)
