Title: The boffo BOXOFFICE thread

William S. Wilson - September 15, 2009 10:49 PM (GMT)
Any fans of this magazine dedicated to the movie theater business? I recently got close to 50 issues from the late 70s on eBay and I love it. Not only are there great ads and info about box office returns (duh!) but they have a great section announcing new film projects, some that got made and some that didn't. As I mentioned in the Variety thread, I love hearing about projects that got announced but never got made.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting little interesting tidbits from the issues I grab at random to read. Here is the first go round. I should also have a scanner soon so I can put up some of the artwork. Here are some scans Marty put up on his blog:

http://craneshot.blogspot.com/2009/09/boxoffice-1976.html

BOXOFFICE
Issue date: October 25, 1976
Cover film: THE PASSOVER PLOT ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075043/ )

From the producer of LUNCHWAGON (1981) and HOLLYWOOD HOT TUBS (1984):
QUOTE
High Gross in Seattle for Borde's SEX MACHINE

Seymour Borde, president of Seymour Borde & Associates, has reported that the "science-friction" comedy THE SEX MACHINE grossed $27,161 during the week of October 6 in a four-theatre multiple in the greater Seattle area.  Borde will be releasing THE SEX MACHINE nationwide.

Hollywood Report:
QUOTE
Henry Ehrlich has acquired Curt Siodmank's comedy-fantasy story "Variations on a Theme" and the two will collaborate on a screenplay.  Production is planned for next January.

QUOTE
A film version of John Hersey's novel "The Child Buyer," about a precocious 12-year-old boy purchased by a company doing government research, is planned by Tony LaMarca and Andrew Bonime.  Lee Minoff (THE YELLOW SUBMARINE) is writing the script.  Shooting is scheduled to begin next March in New England.

QUOTE
Robert Redford's Wildwood Enterprises has purchased James Carroll's novel "Madonna Red" to be made as a Paramount Picture with Walter Coblenz as producer.

QUOTE
Broadway and film producer David Merrick has scored a coup of the year by obtaining the film rights to the new bestseller "Blood and Money" by journalist Thomas Thompson.

The book is a nonfictional account of a series of violent and mysterious circumstances surrounding the death in 1969 of a famous Houston socialite-horsewoman.  Her husband, a wealthy doctor, was accused by her father of her death and later stood trial but was never convicted.  The husband later was murdered under unusual circumstances.

QUOTE
INCIDENT IN THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE will be produced by Cedric Francis for MAK International, with production slated for early next year.  Francis is writing the screenplay for the $3,000,000 feature based on the story by Matt Braunwalder.

QUOTE
James Costigan will write the screenplay for Brut Productions' film VICKY, in which Faye Dunaway will play the 19th-century feminist leader, Victoria Woodhull.

This one is interesting in that it references Cirio Santiago adapting a book H.G. Wells never wrote:
QUOTE
Filming on ZARKOFF - HALF MAN, HALF BEAST started Monday in Manila, Philippines.  The feature, which will be released by Dimension Pictures, is being produced and directed by Cirio Santiago.  The film is from the H.G. Wells book "Zarkoff."

And perhaps the most interesting blurb that never happened:
QUOTE
Phil Kaufman has been named to direct Paramount's STAR TREK feature, based on the science-fiction TV series created by Gene Roddenberry, who will produce the film.  Alan Scott and Chris Bryant are writing the script.  Jerry Isenberg will be the executive producer.  Shooting is slated for next spring.

By far my favorite story in this issue was this one:
QUOTE
Family Fare Switch Hurts, House Returns to X Films

San Diego - Exhibitor Jerry Rucker thought that X movies were seasonal.  During the summer vacation, he switched from showing such films as ALL ABOUT SEX to family fare such as ROBIN AND MARIAN to give parents a place to take their children.  Rucker says he lost $11,000 during that period.  Now he's back to showing DEEP THROAT and BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR.

Ian Maguire - September 16, 2009 01:23 AM (GMT)
Great stuff, William. Looking forward to the scans. There are some great ones on Marty's site. I love the tagline from the ad for NO WAY BACK. "Never trust a woman with her clothes off!"

William S. Wilson - September 16, 2009 02:53 PM (GMT)
Glad you like the stuff, Ian.

BOXOFFICE
Issue date: March 29, 1976
Cover film: REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075137/ )

Hollywood Report:

Yesterday we had an unmade Robert Redford project:
QUOTE
Ward Just has been signed to write the screenplay for THE R DOCUMENT, the forthcoming novel by Irving Wallace, which will be a Paul Newman-George Englund production for United Artists release.

Under the new UA deal, Newman will star and Englund will produce the film, a story described as a "challenge to the Bill of Rights in a near-future America, ravaged by crime and the menace of random violence."

QUOTE
Brut Productions has acquired an original screenplay by S. Lee Pogostin, AND THE DEVIL MAKES THREE, as George Barrie's next picture.  Filming is set for this summer.

QUOTE
Transworld Entertainment, Inc. has acquired three novels and two original  screenplays for filming.  The novels are "Arigato" by Richard Condon (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE), "The Romanov Succession" by Brian Garfield and "The Patchwork Man" by David Harper.  Screenplays are Robert Kaufman's (FREEBIE AND THE BEAN) P.O.W! and Fred M. Stewart's (THE NORLISS TAPES) THE GREAT TRAIN CHASE.

QUOTE
J.W. AND BILLY BOB, described as an EASY RIDER with horses instead of motorcycles, will be produced by Marty Robbins Enterprises.  Robbins and rodeo champ Larry Mahan will star.

This appeared to want to be a spin off of the 1975 TV series THE INVISIBLE MAN, which Stevens and Levi worked on:
QUOTE
Robert Forward has been cast in THE NEW INVISIBLE MAN, a World Premiere feature produced by Leslie Stevens and directed by Alan J. Levi.

Just a cool little casting blurb:
QUOTE
Former all-American football star Scott Lewis and Rainbeaux Smith have signed for roles in Dino de Laurentiis' DRUM for Paramount release.

A rather big sounding project that never got off the ground:
QUOTE
Gene Kelly, who just completed directing THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT, PART 2 for MGM, has been signed to direct the musical HOW SANTA CLAUS GOT HIS NAME, the first film for Delores Taylor Productions.  The big-budgeted feature is scheduled for release Christmas 1977.  Casting is under way for the project with a screenplay by Norman Sachs and Mel Mandel.  James Pratt is the producer.  Production is set for September on various European locations.

QUOTE
Academy Award winner Jeremy Larner has been set by producer-director Sydney Pollack and Universal to write the screenplay for VICTORY, based on Joseph Conrad's English novel.

In the back review section, they offer the following tip to sell BOBBIE JO AND THE OUTLAW:
QUOTE
EXPLOITIPS: Use TV and radio spots.  Exploit the violence and action.  Play up star Marjoe Gortner.

It's hard to scan these, because the pages are just slightly larger than my scanner, leading to some focus and cropping issues, dang it.

Scorsese ended up doing NEW YORK, NEW YORK instead of this:
QUOTE
Universal has signed Martin Scorsese to direct TO FORGET PALERMO, a contemporary dramatic love story based on the novel by Edmonde Charles-Roux, to be adapted as a screenplay by Julia Cameron.  David Foster and Lawrence Turman will produce.  The story dramatizes the contrasting worlds and love relationships of a New York Italian street politician and a WASP fashion magazine editor.

QUOTE
SWAMP APE will be produced by Pine-Thomas Productions from a screenplay by Larry Hilbrand and John Beshelman.

This was clearly going to be amazing and you can guess how it got pitched:
QUOTE
Robert Goulet's Rogo Productions will produce NEW FACE in association with Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Rudi Unterthiner.  The film will be based upon Dr. Unterthiner's experiences in plastic surgery.

QUOTE
Harold Robbins International has scheduled shooting to begin late this summer in Europe and Hollywood on Robbins' novel, THE PIRATE with an international cast to be directed by Just Jaeckin, who directed EMMANUELLE and THE STORY OF O. [it did get made, but not by Jaeckin]

QUOTE
Stephen Kronish will write the script for GAMMA GAMMA GAMMA AND THE DELTA RHO BOYS, based on an original story by William A. Levey, with the Movie Machine production set for a July start.

QUOTE
Michael Lindsay has completed the screenplay for CUCKOO'S PROGRESS, based on the novel by Sture Dahlstrom, for producer-director Sam Peckinpah

QUOTE
Ron Howard, currently starring in EAT MY DUST!, will make his writing-directing debut in New World's FOLLOW THE SPEEDERS, an action comedy in which he also will star. [obviously became GRAND THEFT AUTO]

And my favorite story in this issue by far:
QUOTE
Tom Laughlin Flays Park Service; Charges 'Harassment' in Capital

Hollywood - Tom Laughlin, star of BILLY JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON, got his first taste of the capital city last month and says the experience was unpleasant.

Laughlin, whose Billy Jack Enterprises is making this new version of MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, at a press conference here Tuesday told about his experience on location in the nation's capital.

"It's outrageous how free speech is being denied," the actor charged, "The press harassment is staggering."

Laughlin cited examples of alleged harassment by the National Park Service, which he threatened to sue as violating his civil rights.  The park service officials, he contended, denied him permission to film a bum dozing on a bench in a park across from the White House.  "It doesn't look good for the White House," Laughlin said he was told.

Is this the genesis of what being Quintet, the Altman directed post apocalptic movie with Newman?

I don't think so. Here is the Amazon.com description of THE R DOCUMENT's plot:
QUOTE
Before the Patriot Act, there was . . . The R Document
As crime and violence threaten to engulf America, the President proposes a daring new amendment to the Constitution, allowing the Bill of Rights to be suspended during times of national emergency.

To its supporters the 35th Amendment is the only way to keep America from sliding into chaos. Its opponents see the Amendment as an outright attack on freedom.

Christopher Collins, the newly-appointed Attorney General, has reservations about the Amendment, but feels confident that it would not be abused in the way its more hysterical opponents fear. Then a deathbed confession from his predecessor warns him to beware of something called “The R Document”.

What is The R Document, and what does it have to do with the proposed 35th Amendment? As state after state ratifies the Amendment, pushing it ever closer to becoming the law of the land, Collins must get to the bottom of an unimaginable conspiracy—before time runs out for the fundamental liberties of all Americans.

First published in 1976, Irving Wallace’s bestselling thriller is more timely than ever before.

Could still make a pretty good movie, but I don't think Newman will be up for it (too soon?).

What a doozy this would have been:
QUOTE
Steve Krantz will produce the $5,000,000 ATTACK OF THE 50-FT WOMAN for Dimension Pictures and has signed Paul Morrisey to direct.

QUOTE
Aubrey/Lyon Productions has signed an agreement to produce JEAN'S WAY, based on an English novel by Derek Humphrey dealing with voluntary euthanasia.

QUOTE
Producer Paul Rapp plans to begin filming next winter in Aspen, Colorado on WEEKEND IN ASPEN, from a screenplay he has written from his own novel with Casey Kasem starring.

Interesting switch of directors (this was eventually made by George Roy Hill):
QUOTE
Warner Bros. has acquired rights to THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, a novel by John Irving.  James Bridges (THE CHINA SYNDROME) will adapt the novel for the screen and will direct the feature set to begin shooting next year.

Another interesting director switch (Buzz Kulik made the film):
QUOTE
THE HUNTER will be produced by Paramount Pictures with Peter Hyams signed to write the script and direct the feature starring Steve McQueen, based on the novel by Christopher Keane.

QUOTE
Paramount has signed Terence Cahalan to write the script for INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE from the novel by Ann Rice.  Bob LeMond and Lois Zetter will produce.

Is this another joke? Can't find reference to these titles anywhere:
QUOTE
Lawrence H. Woolner, president of Dimension Pictures, has announced the acquisition of three additional theatrical features for 1979-80 distribution.  The films are GODS FROM OUTER SPACE, SHEIK OF BEVERLY HILLS and BADDEST MAN IN TOWN.  Dimension also recently acquire THE GREATEST BATTLE with Henry Fonda.

THE GREATEST BATTLE was released in 1979, and then re-released by 21st Century Dist. after they bought the Dimension library, according to this. The others never saw the light of day under those titles, if they existed at all.

Peter Hyams has a screenplay credit on THE HUNTER. Since Buzz Kulik wasn't a guy one would call in to direct a Steve McQueen action movie unless you were in a real jam, I wonder how late in the ballgame Hyams left the project. Maybe he even shot some of it?

QUOTE
MGM has signed Martin Scorsese to direct HAUNTED SUMMER, a Gothic horror film being scripted by Frederic Raphael from a novel by Anne Edwards.  The story is set in Europe in the early 1880s and deals with Mary Shelly writing "Frankenstein." Robert Kaplan and Burt Weissbourd will co-produce.

Incredibly, a lot of this issue is spent talking about Tom Laughlin (BILLY JACK) and his new rental plan he describes as "the most radical change in decades in the distribution of motion pictures." He says, "Our approach is going to be simply that the guarantee we're going to ask for on each picture will result in giving the cream to the exhibitor for taking the risk. For instance, we will ask for a guarantee on a picture and the dollar amount of the guarantee will vary from theater to theater, depending on the grossing power of that house, and houses will be rated from A through E on the basis of their weekly grossing average."

To complement all of this, there is a gorgeous centerfold ad for BILLY JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON. I wish my scanner could have gotten the whole thing, but this is a pretty good representation.

"Forever" was the favorite book of the infamous Virginia Hill, Bugsy Siegel's mistress. This was reported in the book, "We Only Kill Each Other: The Life and Bad Times of Bugsy Siegel," by Dean Jennings, which Warren Beatty used as the basis for his film, BUGSY, in which Annette Bening played Miss Hill. No mention of Mildred Cram or "Forever" in the film, however.

Cram co-wrote the original story for BEYOND TOMORROW (1940), in which three old guys who died in a plane crash use their celestial powers to help a young couple, whom they'd brought together before they'd died, through their romantic turmoil. It's quite touching. It stars Richard Carlson, Jean Parker, Harry Carey, C. Aubrey Smith and Charles Winninger.

Has anybody ever seen this film, DEATH MACHINES? I remember seeing this ad back then and reading a plot synopsis of it, and I've always been intrigued by it. But everybody connected with it was a complete unknown back then and they remain so today. I don't think I've ever read a review or critical comment about it. And I'm not sure it ever played New York theaters back then. So I have no idea exactly what kind of film it is. Or if it's even worth tracking down.

I'm a fan of DEATH MACHINES. It is one of those low budget US martial arts flicks that could only be made in the 70s with a plot predating UNIVERSAL SOLDIER. I've seen quite a few Ron Marchini flicks after this and he certainly is an unusual leading man. Just make sure when you watch it that you know full well you will never see anything as cool as that poster in the final film.

Interesting little story about CARNIVAL OF BLOOD helmer & XXX director Leonard Kirtman trying to make a stab at mainstream movie making again. It didn't happen:
QUOTE
Leonard Kirtman, president of International Film Industries, announced plans to delay production of the feature BOUNCE! ...  BOUNCE! is a comedy set in a New England college about a group of coeds who form a college basketball team and demand the right to play the boys' team to determine who will represent the school in a key tournament.

Hollywood Report:

I wonder if this morphed into HERO AT LARGE, also written by Carothers and starring Ritter.
QUOTE
MGM plans to begin production early next year on WHO SAYS NICE GUYS FINISH LAST?, a comedy to star John Ritter.  Stephen Friedman will produce from an original screenplay by AJ Carothers.

Edwards made 10 instead of this; it was made as a TV movie in 1985:
QUOTE
Blake Edwards has signed with Orion Pictures to write, produce and direct THE FERRET, a suspense comedy about a clumsy, bumbling son of the master of international intrigue. Production is planned for next summer.

Could this have been the infamous ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN? I wonder if they sprung the fishmen on Cotton after he signed.
QUOTE
Medusa Productions of Rome will begin shooting in mid-October in Rome on VOLCANO ISLAND with Joseph Cotton starring as a scientist in the adventure-romance to be directed by Sergio Martino.

QUOTE
Niko Mastorakis has optioned ODYSSEY OF THE MEEK, an original screenplay by Fred Perry.

In the section on local area film news, this was mentioned about what was showing in Pittsburgh:
QUOTE
Area theaters were featuring HOT AND SAUCY PIZZA GIRLS, THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, HARD SOAP, SLITHIS, YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE, CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE PEANUT BUTTER FREAK, LOVE ME TO DEATH, TAKEOFF, THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, FM, THE HILLS HAVE EYES and DON'T OPEN THE WINDOW.

Quite an amazing mish-mash of titles there. Just for kicks, here is this issues Box Office barometer. The wide assortment of flicks playing at the time is pretty amazing. Surprisingly, Kansas City looked like the place to be as they showed everything.

More on this one here. Chris Poggiali works around the corner from Kirtman's old office and a couple blocks from where this was filmed. That "New England college" is really a Catholic high school in New Rochelle, N.Y. Chris pointed it out to me once during an impromptu movie tour of the city, along with locations used in DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE, SCREAM FOR HELP, GOODFELLAS, THE DELI, RAGTIME, a couple of Samuel Sherman productions, even the old Terrytoons studio.
