Title: I Can't Believe It
Description: An Oscar for Roger Corman!
Marty McKee - September 11, 2009 02:18 PM (GMT)
An honorary Oscar, but, hey,
it counts.
I never thought this day would come, but I agree it is long overdue. The downside: the Academy no longer televises the honorary awards, so we probably won't get to see Roger's acceptance speech or the amazing clip package that accompanies his award.
P.S. Oh, also Lauren Bacall, John Calley, and Gordon Willis (the director of WINDOWS...ah, just kidding...the awesome cinematographer) will be honored.

It is about dang time! It is a shame the man has to be semi-retired and in his 80s before they give him this recognition. While I know it is for his longevity in the industry and producing nearly 400 titles, I'd like to think this Oscar is for his giving the greenlight for SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE II.

What a great idea to give Corman an award, but what a stupid idea to not include it in the annual telecast and give me a reason to tune in. Can you imagine what a great live TV spectacle would result if they'd had everybody who got a break from Corman get up onstage with him when he gets his award? Jack Nicholson, Francis Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Bruce Dern, Peter Fonda, Robert Vaughn, Ron Howard, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, John Sayles, Joe Dante, Pam Grier, Carl Franklin, Robert Towne and whoever the hell else I'm forgetting. And clips from TEENAGE CAVEMAN, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE INTRUDER (William Shatner demanding a cabbie take him to "Niggertown"), THE WILD ANGELS, THE TRIP, CAGED HEAT, HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, STRIPPED TO KILL...okay, I'm getting carried away here.

. . . yes, particularly when, as you note, half the audience sitting in the theater probably owe him their start in the business . . . I have been kind of wondering if they might give him a Thalberg Award one of these days as it is given to producers whose work "reflects a consistently high quality of motion picture production", but I suppose that was always a rather silly idea on my part as I am sure those handing out these things have a very different idea of "quality" than the sort of movie Corman worked on all these years, although, of course, they did make money which should be enough of a reason to give him a producer's award . . . you know, I just thought that if Corman were producing the Awards show, he would probably cut the award presentation for himself to save money . . .

If one of his protogee's receives an award, they should call him up on stage.
Ridiculous his award presentation is not being telecast after all he's done for filmmaking in the USA (and worldwide).

I've been saying they should do this for years. And they should definitely make it part of the telecast. Just get Netflix to sponsor that segment. The clip montage will put Corman's films on their "long wait" list for the rest of the year.
Congrats, Rog.
