Title: Top Cult/Exploitation Movies Not on DVD?
Marty McKee - July 12, 2009 04:31 AM (GMT)
I'm talking Region 1 here, but feel free to set your own ground rules.
Most of mine are basically interchangeable, except for the top two, which are:
THREE THE HARD WAY
RITUALS
It's possible that even a remastered DVD version of RITUALS will still be too dark to see in places, but this terrific Canadian thriller is just tough to watch in its current pan-and-scan form. That it still manages to tingle your senses is a great tribute to director Peter Carter and his cast.
Of course, THREE THE HARD WAY is one of the finest blaxploitation movies of its era and the greatest showcase for its leading men: Fred Williamson, Jim Kelly, and Jim Brown. It's one of the few blaxploitation movies that transcends the genre (like SHAFT) and stands as just a great action movie, black stars, white stars, or otherwise.
Also,
STACEY
I think Roger Corman owns this one, and as awesome as I think Roger is, he is really frustrating when it comes to sitting on his films and not making them available. As well as he smells money, it's amazing it hasn't occurred to him how much he could make putting STACEY, GALAXY OF TERROR, FORBIDDEN WORLD, DAY THE WORLD ENDED (which was released, but not LBXed), etc. on DVD.
DARK OF THE SUN
Fantastic two-fisted (four-fisted?) African adventure stars Jim Brown (again) and Rod Taylor and demands a larger audience. Similarly, SANDS OF THE KALAHARI with Stuart Whitman could really use a LBX DVD (was this even on VHS?).
STUNT ROCK and THE MAN FROM HONG KONG are out with plenty of extras in Region 4, but not here yet. Although STUNT ROCK has been announced by Code Red, I believe. But Code Red has announced several titles that remain on the shelf. Why not MAN FROM HONG KONG, Code Red?
ROLLING THUNDER...Hellooooooo, does some rights owner want to make some money or what? Great cast of name stars, great premise, put the riveting poster art on the box, get Quentin Tarantino to "present" it and maybe do a commentary track with Bill Devane, and let the cash fill your pockets. I really need to be a DVD producer.
Anything from Earl Owensby, but if I had to name one, it would be CHAIN GANG or SEABO. I just want to see the obligatory Owensby career retrospective featurette that someone would have to make for it.
Boy, and several more '70s action flicks never on VHS: TRACKDOWN, VIGILANTE FORCE, THE FARMER. Was RAPE SQUAD on VHS? Also, a MOONSHINE COUNTY EXPRESS DVD is necessary.
Now I'm getting carried away.
John Charles - July 12, 2009 01:20 PM (GMT)
Thorn-EMI released RAPE SQUAD on tape as ACT OF VENGEANCE. That is also the title on the remastered version MGM has in TV syndication.
STACEY was issued on tape, but not by the usual Roger Corman outlets (Inter-Global being one of the labels that released it), so I don't think he has it anymore.
I'll wager that DARK OF THE SUN and THREE THE HARD WAY come out as Warner Archive titles.
Patrick Lefcourt - July 12, 2009 02:57 PM (GMT)
Quite a few of
these would make my list.
It'll be interesting to see if BEN comes out now that Michael Jackson's fanbase has reawakened from its 20 year slumber.
William S. Wilson - July 12, 2009 04:39 PM (GMT)
Just a few off the top of my head:
-ELECTRIC DREAMS
-BUSTING
-NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER
-THE PURSUIT OF D.B. COOPER
-8 MILLION WAYS TO DIE
-GATOR BAIT I & II
-DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION series
-HARRISON BERGERON
-NIGHTMARES
-CHEERLEADER'S WILD WEEKEND (although Code Red has announced this)
-REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS
-SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY
EDIT - I second the Owensby request and also demand we get deluxe editions of every Patrick Donahue action flick.
John Charles - July 12, 2009 09:54 PM (GMT)
NIGHTMARES, the 1983 horror anthology from Universal? Anchor Bay put that out a few years back. OOP, but still floating around.
Bill Picard - July 12, 2009 10:24 PM (GMT)
I'm surprised UNHOLY ROLLERS hasn't made it to DVD yet.
John Black - July 13, 2009 05:16 AM (GMT)
Here are some of my cult wants:
UNHOLY ROLLERS (with the original rock 'n' roll soundtrack from 35mm)
BLOOD AND ROSES (widescreen, uncut including full nightmare sequence)
VAMPIRE CIRCUS
THE NAME OF THE GAME IS KILL (1968)
BLOOD AND LACE
THE COUCH
GAMES (widescreen)
KITTEN WITH A WHIP
THE TODD KILLINGS
THE MANSON MASSACRE (in English)
THE ANGRY BREED
NOT MY DAUGHTER (aka LIKE IT IS, 1970)
THE YOUNG CYCLE GIRLS (uncut)
and a couple of "lost" films:
PRIVATE PROPERTY (1960)
MME. OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR
RAT FINK (1965)
one note--REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS is available in the CHEERLEADERS triple set from Anchor Bay (I think it is)

It is.

How did I forget KILL SQUAD?? Joseph needs this.
Steve Johnson - July 13, 2009 12:39 PM (GMT)
Hugo Haas. The more I learn about the guy the more serious and involving his films become, and not a one of them is available in decent quality.

To make it even more frustrating for Joseph, Code Red initially listed this on their site as a title they had but it is no longer on there.
John Charles - July 13, 2009 04:25 PM (GMT)
For what it's worth, Sony has done nice new transfers of several Hugo Haas films and they are currently in rotation on Drive-In Classics. Don't know about whether they are airing in the US yet.

Just a few off the top of my head:
-ELECTRIC DREAMS |
No idea if this is of any use to you, but ELECTRIC DREAMS has just been released on R2 in the UK.
Rob Peace - July 13, 2009 08:59 PM (GMT)
BEN was mentioned, but how about the original WILLARD?
STARSHIP INVASIONS was announced recently but then never released.
Mick Sheehy - July 14, 2009 12:44 AM (GMT)
I must have:
1) Deep End (1971/Jerzy Skolimowski)
2) T.A.G. The Assassination Game
Mike Mariano - July 14, 2009 04:09 AM (GMT)
I'll second DEEP END and STACEY, and also add:
SWEET SUGAR (w/Phyllis Davis)
1,000 CONVICTS AND A WOMAN
SAVAGE SISTERS (Eddie Romero)
Hal Horn - July 14, 2009 04:39 AM (GMT)
I'll second BLOOD AND LACE and third DEEP END, and my other top cult "wants" that haven't been mentioned yet are:
DARKTOWN STRUTTERS
CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD
SUGAR HILL (1974)
PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW
BARQUERO (just got a UK release recently, still nothing in the U.S.)
THUNDER RUN (1986)
HCH
Marty McKee - July 14, 2009 01:38 PM (GMT)
CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD is out on a PAL DVD at 2.35:1. I should get around to watching that sucka. I've only seen it on TV (pan-and-scan) and theatrically on a double bill with BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (!) in the mid-1990s. Norman Fell as a befuddled guy named Stanley (Roper?) is killer.
Jason Minnix - July 14, 2009 02:22 PM (GMT)
Code Red has a trailer for RITUALS on at least one of their discs (SWEET SIXTEEN), so there's a glimmer of hope there.

And THE FARMER, but I'll believe it when I see it.
John Charles - July 14, 2009 04:26 PM (GMT)
THUNDER RUN was released on DVD in the UK, but it's now OOP. Likely foolscreen with no extras.
Mike Mariano - July 14, 2009 04:59 PM (GMT)
I'll second PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW, and add some others:
NAVY VS. THE NIGHT MONSTERS
THE PSYCHOPATH (Amicus)
THE FEMALE BUNCH (Al Adamson; w/Lon Chaney, Jr., and scenes shot at Spahn Ranch)
THE PENTHOUSE (finally saw this via a grey market copy; was amazed to see Suzy Kendall bare her lovely behind in a brief nude scene!)
John Charles - July 14, 2009 05:13 PM (GMT)
Here we go again --
THE FEMALE BUNCH is allegedly coming from Code Red!
Chas Lindsay - July 15, 2009 04:51 PM (GMT)
THE LAST MOVIE (because it's got Julie Adams in it)
THE SAVAGE IS LOOSE (I remember George C. Scott on the Merv Griffin show defending this as about the survival of the family. After watching the kinda weird RAGE (also directed by Scott) recently, my desire to see this has upped considerably).
TILT (I'm not dying to see this Brooke Shields movie again but if it became available I might be tempted to pick it up just to see all that I've forgotten).
Mike Mariano - July 18, 2009 04:18 AM (GMT)
Another: THE MAD ROOM (1969, w/Stella Stevens and Shelley Winters), which has never been released on tape or disc anywhere.
John Black - July 18, 2009 05:50 AM (GMT)
I'll definitely second THE MAD ROOM, and PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW would be cool, too.

Potential bad news for DARK OF THE SUN fans. Roy Frumkes claims
the original negative is damaged:
I’m putting in my vote for DARK OF THE SUN, a film whose negative, I hear (directly from the source at MGM) is damaged, so a print will have to be found elsewhere, as some of these have.
John Black - August 15, 2009 05:30 AM (GMT)
I'd still like to see WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR come out on Region 1, and uncut! Letterboxing would be nice, too.
