Title: BUH-BYE!
Chester Berne - June 21, 2009 07:22 PM (GMT)
Aleck Bennett - June 21, 2009 08:47 PM (GMT)
If it's half as hilarious as THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, then I think we're in for the feel-good comedy of the year.
Justin Kerswell - June 22, 2009 12:03 PM (GMT)
A mega-tsunami swamping the Himalayas? Now this I gotta see!
Justin Kerswell - June 22, 2009 12:13 PM (GMT)
This is even better. An battleship riding a mega-tsunami wiping out the White House!

I saw the trailer for FINAL DESTINATION 4 yesterday, which had people being killed in 3-D by flying tires and lugnuts and engines and lawnmowers and collapsing escalators, falling scaffolding and out-of-control car washes. This one looks just like that, only with the ante upped to death by collapsing landmarks like the Vatican and the Washington Monument. Otherwise, same principle. Which will be the better movie?
And doesn't the plot of this sound a lot like WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (1951)?
And couldn't they have picked a cast of actors whom we might actually want to root for? Who cares if John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Woody Harrelson are in danger? We need someone with unmistakable trash appeal. I mean, this could have been Ashton Kutcher's breakout movie! Look what DAY AFTER TOMORROW did for Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum. :P
P.S. I got it! Jason Statham and Megan Fox--now there's a couple that would make the world worth saving. :D
Richard Harland Smith - June 22, 2009 02:52 PM (GMT)
It's about time somebody settled The Vatican's hash.

Oh, my. Hopefully there's not too much yammering in between the apocalyptic porn.

eh, why let a plot get in the way of a good story.
Gerry Carpenter - June 26, 2009 09:54 PM (GMT)
My first reaction was: Man! CGI effects are really getting good!
Brian Camp - June 27, 2009 09:33 PM (GMT)
After TRANSFORMERS 2, G.I. JOE, and the new HARRY POTTER (in which London gets wrecked), people's appetite for global landmark destruction will be so sated, they'll pass on 2012 entirely. Bad timing, Mr. Emmerich. :o
Shawn Garrett - June 28, 2009 06:55 PM (GMT)
I stopped with the HARRY POTTER films after the 3rd one, will the new one really feature global landmark destruction?

The trailer shows scenes of London under attack by some kind of evil power and I'm assuming some London landmarks will get damaged.

Don May Jr - July 7, 2009 04:29 PM (GMT)
This might be the greatest fan trailer ever.
Craig Blamer - July 8, 2009 02:19 AM (GMT)
Just pondering the heavy-handed symbolism/irony of the USS John F. Kennedy carrier wiping out the White House.
William S. Wilson - October 6, 2009 12:11 AM (GMT)
Here is the latest 2012 clip, which is getting a considerable razzing by internet film news types. Not really sure why this one is being singled out as ridiculous given the swill they shill. I mean, remember the car bit in WAR OF THE WORLDS? This it looks like Irwin Allen's dream project.

An amusing re-edit of that footage which features only the actors reactions.

When I was getting on the Staten Island ferry "The John F. Kennedy" yesterday I was chuckling, remembering the trailer. I guess this movie completes the wrecking of the Vatican that DEVILS & ANGELS began (no, I didn't see it, but I read about the fx in CINEFEX).
The flying off a collaspsing runway reminded me of the mini-series of King's THE LANGOLIERS; that really ought to be remade.

Really? I thought "Man! No more translucent alligators from ERASER, but otherwise, CGI effects still look like CGI effects!"
Marty McKee - October 7, 2009 07:02 PM (GMT)
Here's a question sure to drive some of you crazy. Have you ever seen CGI in a film that was better than the best visual effects you've ever seen done old-school--matte paintings, miniatures, etc.? Say, 2001 or STAR WARS or ALIEN or SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE or THE HOWLING or even something like THUNDERBIRDS and SPACE: 1999. Have you seen a CGI monster transformation as good as the work in HOWLING or AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, for instance (even if you don't assume those are the top of the line, you probably will admit these movies are up there)?
William S. Wilson - October 7, 2009 07:36 PM (GMT)
I would give a nod to the CGI effects in both STARSHIP TROOPERS and DISTRICT 9.

The CGI zords in MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS THE MOVIE compare well with those in the TV series. :P
Bill Picard - October 7, 2009 07:48 PM (GMT)
Harryhausen's monsters are beautiful and his craft is amazing, but I never believed I was watching a real creature, unlike in JURASSIC PARK, which is a mix of cgi and animatronics but pretty seamless.
(dodges tomato)
William S. Wilson - November 13, 2009 03:21 PM (GMT)
Well, 2012 is now upon us. The question now is who will be the Mobian crazy enough to go see it? I nominate Mark Tinta!
John Charles - November 13, 2009 03:24 PM (GMT)
I nominate Mark Tinta!
Seconded!

Chester Berne - November 13, 2009 04:01 PM (GMT)
I will probably be seeing the matinee tomorrow. After the way the last couple of weeks have gone, I'm really in the mood to see the world destroyed!

I'm glad I'm the Mikey of this forum. I'll see it, but it won't be until Thursday of next week. My dad wants to see it and I told him I'd go with him, but I won't be out my folks' way until Thursday, when I have a dentist appointment. So, I accept the nomination and will perform my assigned duty, but I'll need a four-day reprieve. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, you cowards will have a full report by Thursday evening, 11/19.
In exchange for this, someone needs to Netflix LA LINEA (THE LINE) (covered in the Arthouse thread) and see if they can make any sense out of it.
Bob Gutowski - November 13, 2009 04:16 PM (GMT)
I saw a Discovery Channel HD tie-in last night w/ plenty o' footage from the movie, which looked rather grand on my 46 inch screen.
Mark Tinta - November 13, 2009 04:21 PM (GMT)
Ebert gave 2012 three and a half stars. Which means it's almost as good as KNOWING.
Marty McKee - November 13, 2009 05:39 PM (GMT)
And 3 1/2 stars better than DEATH RACE 2000.
Terry Barhorst, Jr. - November 13, 2009 06:05 PM (GMT)
Thank goodness we have standards.
Craig Blamer - November 13, 2009 07:53 PM (GMT)
I'll probably check it out today... I do enjoy my disaster porn. Hopefully this delivers...

William S. Wilson - November 14, 2009 03:42 PM (GMT)
Well, even without Mr. Tinta's support until next Thursday, 2012 raked in a massive $25 million dollars on Friday alone.
Chester Berne - November 14, 2009 11:06 PM (GMT)
Pretty stupid, but a lot of fun. Well worth the $5.50 I spent to get into the matinee.

WHOA! Where the heck does a $5.50 matinee still exist?
Craig Blamer - November 15, 2009 02:13 AM (GMT)
Six bucks where I'm at.
Personally, didn't feel I got my money's worth. Maybe twenty minutes of disaster porn (which didn't even start until a half-hour in), padded out by another two-plus hours of badly-written melodrama. Dialogue you can mutter a second before the actors do.
And this coming from someone that enjoyed Emmerich's Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow.

The Frozen Tundra!
A regular pepsi and raisinets were $6.50, though!
