Title: New Movie: "The Island" - Coming Soon
Description: This sounds awfully like "Logna's Run"

Just read about this new movie coming out this summer (July 22, 2005) called The Island and starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlette Johansson.

Listen to this description:

Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in the mid-21st century. Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island," reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare parts" for their original human counterparts. Realizing it is only a matter of time before he is "harvested," Lincoln makes a daring escape with a fellow resident named Jordan Two-Delta (Johansson). Pursued by the forces of the institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan engage in a race for their lives to literally meet their makers.

Yes - I know it's not "Logan's Run" to a 'T', but it's awfully damn close.

Similarities between this and Logan's Run:

1. Each character's name is an actual first name and follows with a number (which is then followed by a greek letter)

2. A controlled environment.

3. Utopian society.

4. The Lead longs of going to a beautiful Island (a sort of 'Sanctuary'?????)

5. Main character discovers his life is a lie.

6. Lead character escapes this Utopia, with the aid of a beautiful female (Johansson) :P

WOW!!!! Could this be the remake just using a differtent title??????? I don't think so, but it sounds very good!!!

The previews are up at Yahoo Movies.

Anyone elses thoughts????

I just saw the preview for this movie today, on TV. Although it appears that it has many similar aspects of Logan's Run, it's probably gonna be very different.

A few years ago, I was told that "Gattaca" was very similar to "Logan's Run", too - yet that movie was very different, and didn't resemble LR to me at all. I was kind of let down by that movie after knowing that. It was good - but nothing like I was expecting.

The previews for this one do look very good, and with a super cast that includes Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson (who, at one time, I thought would make a very good Jessica), it's one that I am now looking forward to seeing this summer. I just won't go in over-expecting the Logan's Run themes, as I did for "Gattaca" - and will just try to enjoy it on it's own merits.

Well, it looks like The Island is one of this summer's biggest money losers at the Box Office. I'll probably wait to see it now on DVD - it'll probably be out within the next month or two - seeing how no ones going to the movies to see it.

This article compares The Island to Logans Run and Stealth (another Box Office loser) to 2001. The article seems to suggest that todays audiences are becoming more Hollywood smart, knowing when a studio is marketing a film as 'new' when it's nothing more than an old idea, rehashed.

"The Island" is similar to "Logan's Run", but perhaps too similar to "Clonus"...

"Clonus" director says he's seen this clone story before
By Mark Rahner, Seattle Times DVD writer

Here's an irony alert — and a lawsuit alert: a new movie about clones appears to be an uncredited clone of another movie.

Director Michael Bay's new science-fiction blockbuster has drawn comparisons to the '70s classics "Logan's Run" and "Coma." But "The Island" looks so much like 1979's "Clonus," aka "Parts: The Clonus Horror" (available on DVD from Mondo Macabro, $19.95) that its director says he may seek a federal injunction to stop "The Island's" distribution.

"Clonus" is an obscure cheapie with a fascinating premise, best known now because of the ridiculing it took in a "Mystery Science Theater 3000" episode. Viewing one after the other will make you do a double take.

In Bay's movie, the closely monitored, mod-clothed, naive residents of a futuristic colony win a lottery to go away to a promised land called "The Island."

In "Clonus," the closely monitored, mod-clothed, naive residents of a futuristic colony are chosen to go to a promised land called "America."

In both movies, a male resident goes on the run when he discovers that the promised land is a lie, and that he's part of a colony of clones being grown to harvest their organs when the rich human originals ail. Both feature an evil scientist keeping his project a secret from the public at all costs by sending assassins after the runner.

Reached at his home in Ashburn, Va., "Clonus" director Robert S. Fiveson said Wednesday that he'd sneaked into a preview screening of "The Island" the previous night. "I went in hoping and praying that it was enough different than 'Clonus' so that I could just put my mind at rest and move on, but I can't. Because astonishingly enough, it not only seems to rest on the very skeleton of the film, ... there were enough (similarities) in the movie in the first third that I thought this cannot be happenstance or casual."

Fiveson said he'd known about the numerous Web sites and message boards that have been pointing out the similarities — even of some specific shots: "Subplots, characterizations, even down to the butterfly getting through the filter! And the chase scenes were almost in the same order and same locale."

What went through Fiveson's head as Bay's movie unfolded?

"I was thinking 'Jeez, this looks so much better than my movie. I wish I had the money.' "

"Clonus" cost $257,000. "The Island's" budget was $120 million.

Press materials for "The Island" tout its "original screenplay," which an enthusiastic Steven Spielberg sent to Bay. The story is credited to Caspian Tredwell-Owen, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. There's no mention of Bob Sullivan, who wrote the "Clonus" story and co-wrote the screenplay with Ron Smith, with an "adaptation" credit going to Fiveson and Myrl A. Schreibman.

Although he's been talking with lawyers, Fiveson said he doesn't know what he wants from "The Island" filmmakers or its studio, DreamWorks. "I'm not in this to make money, frankly." However, he said, "I wouldn't mind if this thing went to a jury trial at all."

Ok, I just saw this movie yesterday on DVD, and although it could have used some improvements in certain areas, I have to say I enjoyed it. The story was good, albeit not original and the second half is just one Big Over The Top Chase Scene, but still well done. I think the critic were Way, Way, Way overly harsh trowards this movie...I myself am pretty fimiliar with Michael Bay's style of movie making and knew exactly what to expect before I saw the film, and of couse after watching I found it was exactly what I expected. I think sometimes these critics go to see these action flicks with the expectation of seeing the next Indiana Jones and its simply never gonna happen. I myself am a very simple guy when it comes to movies...Just make a decent story, blow lots of shit up, and throw in a decent looking female for good measure and I'll be happy... :D
...It does'nt have to be "Gone With The Wind" to get my two thumbs up..Way to go Michael, well done!! keep em comin  ...

I just got done watching "The Island" this afternoon and yes - it is VERY much like "Logan's Run" in many ways!! And although it was not very ORIGINAL, it was still enjoyable to watch.

Similarities:

The psuedo utopian society, populated with beautiful citizens (even though it wasn't very hedonistic).
The lie of The Island being similar to the lie of Carrousel.
Lincoln Six-echo questioning the order of things, only to discover it's all a lie.
Lincoln running to escape death with a beatiful girl in tow
Heading back to the 'city' to free everyone else at the end!

in other words......

The Clone world is the City of Domes
The Island is Sanctuary
The Lottery is Carrousel
Organ retrieval is a blinking lifeclock
The Mercenaries are the Sandmen
Ewan McGregor is LR Michael York (just not a cop)
Scarlett Johansson is LR Jenny Agutter
Sean Bean is LR Mother Computer
and Djimon Hounsou is LR Richard Jordan (what I really liked about this newer 'version' is that 'Francis' ultimately sees the error of his ways).

With all that said, the film was still entertaining and enjoyable, just not that all original.

"The Island" borrows ALOT from other CLASSIC SciFi films such as "Logan's Run", "BladeRunner", "Coma", "The Matrix" and "THX-1138" - all personal SciFi favorites of mine. Many say it was a rip off of the low budget 1979 film "The Clonus Horror", but alas, I haven't seen that film.

For what it was though, "The Island" was well done, had a great cast, was funny in parts and had some terrific chase/action sequences! It was a pretty good film - just not all that original.

What I always enjoyed about LR was the futuristic city itself. Like a large playground for the kids of the society - free to explore and to do whatever you'd like. There is none of that in "The Island" - thank God! If there were, I would have to sit Michael Bay down and ask him why he thought it was o.k. to TOTALLY rip off one of the greatest SciFi films ever amde and disguise it as his own, only to change it's name!! As it stands, it's a partial rip-off, yet oddly still enjoyable.

Still, it works as entertainment. Just beware of it's disguise....

Two out of Four stars....
