Title: Remake Casting Suggestions
Description: Who would you like to see in the remake?
Logan5 - December 16, 2004 02:01 PM (GMT)
With the Logan's Run remake now put on hold for at least another year (that is, until Singer finishes his "Superman Returns" project), we'd like to ask who you would like to see cast int he roles of the major Logan remake cast? Keep in mind that the main characters, with the possible exception of Ballard, need to be around 21 years of age by the time this thing finally gets off the ground (or can at least pass as around that age).
The list below is a compilation of casting thoughts from the Logan members on our previous boards. Some of these I question because of the age restricition, but they're still interesting to ponder...
Logan: Michael Pitt, Hayden Christiansen, Heath Ledger, Matt Damon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey McGuire, Taye Diggs
Francis: Ashton Kutcher, Colin Farrell, David Arquette, Henry Cavill, James Franco, Simon Cowell  ??
Jessica: Natalie Portman, Milla Jovowitch, Alexandra Paul, Joy Bryant, Thandie Newton, Anne Hathaway, Rose Magowin, Julia Stilies
Ballard/Old Man: Michael York, Christopher Walken, James Earl Jones, Clive Owen, Anthony Hopkins, Steve Hill, Frank Lengella
Doc: Ashton Kutcher, Will Farrell, Patrick Swayze, David Duchovny, Ben Affleck
Holly: Kirsten Dundst, Angie Harmon, Jessica Simpson, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Garner, Ashley Olsen, Britney Spears, Milly Simms, Serina Miller
Box: Ben Affleck
Doyle: Ethan Hunt
surely there are more possibilities....
Ron - December 23, 2004 03:44 AM (GMT)
I think Matt Damon as Logan is a good choice. He's proved that he can carry a action film. They must put Micheal York and Jenny Agutter in the remake.Maybe even Farrah!Don't do the mistake that was done in the original film, by having a all white cast.Cast a black actor in the role of francis.maybe Beyonce as Jessica?
Alexis - December 25, 2004 10:42 PM (GMT)
Hi !!!
for the casting, here is that I see (I go on the fact, that the new movie repect the first book with 21 years for the carousel) and
Spoiler Alert
Francis is Ballard (so he must a actor half old - half young) :
End of Spoiler
Logan : James Marsden; Leonardo Di Caprio; Shawn Ashmore; Elijah Wood; Orlando Bloom, Chris O'Donnell and David Boreanaz...
Francis : James Franco; Julian McMahon; Tom Cruise; Matt damon; Hugh Jackman; Aaron Stanford and Keanu Reeve (I like very much this actor !!!) ;)
Jessica : Cate Blanchett; Liv Tyler; Carrie-Anne MOSS and Natalie Portman
for the others characters, we don't know exactly that Bryan Singer will made...
Sir Rhosis - December 26, 2004 10:29 PM (GMT)
I would have some of Ballard's helpers at Cape Steinbeck be runners who over the years have made it there, thus we could have a cameos by York and Agutter as "old people," though honestly both York and Agutter have aged so damn well they would need make-up to make them look "old."
In my other post,
Spoiler Alert
I was careful not to give away the Ballard/Francis connection, but since someone else has mentioned they are one and the same. . . .
I would cast a thirty-year-old as Francis, shoot him in soft focus, then add a bit of gray, and the beginnings of age lines when he is shown as Ballard at 42. I dislike casting two different actors, unless you can get a father and son who look as much alike as say the late Lloyd Bridges and his son Jeff.
End of Spoiler
Though, I'm going to be honest and say I think they will change the ending. Although I like the book over the film, I have always been disappointed that Sanctuary was
Spoiler Alert
an abandoned space station.
End of Spoiler
I'd rather it be somewhere out in the wilderness. Heck, I could see the Black Hills as Sanctuary, or maybe the abandoned Hawaiian Islands or something of that nature.

hmmm....
Logan's Run, featuring Charlton Heston as Logan....
"Sandmen, let my people go!"... or not.
rknight - January 17, 2005 07:00 AM (GMT)
i would like to see haden christiensen (star wars) as francis .......... and tobey mcguire as logan .....jessica should be " the ever hot" chick that plays the pink power ranger, kim something ( cant remember her last name).......ballard should be will smith ( LOL!)......ok , joke there, ha, ha......ballard should be ben affleck....
The Running Man - April 14, 2005 05:16 PM (GMT)
First of all the I believe its a bad I dea to decrease the age to 21. It seriously limits your pool of actors. Leave the age at 30. In saying that here's the line up...
LOGAN: Matthew McConaughey , Brad Pitt, Hyden Christiansen, Mark Wallberg.
JESSICA: Natelie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, ( The pretty little brunett from "THE DAY AFTER TOMMORROW" I forget the actresses name), Kirsten Dunst.
FRANCIS: Mark Walberg, Colin Farel, Jamie Fox, Edward Norton.
OLD MAN: Michael York, James Earl Jones, Ian Mckellen.
HOLLY: Paris Hilton, Jesica Simpson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stafani.
DOC: Edward Norton, Macaulay Culkin.
My number one choices would Be..
LOGAN.........Mathew McConaughey.
JESSICA......( The pretty little brunette from"THE DAY AFTER TOMMORROW"
OLD MAN.....Michael York.
FRANCIS......Mark Walberg.
HOLLY..........Paris Hilton ( I know I'll get some flak for that one.)
DOC............Edward Norton.
As an End Note...From looking at some of these message boards I here the names Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio thrown around alot. Athough I recognize both of them as legitmate actors with an excellet body of work, I believe it would be a mistake to cast either of them as LOGAN. In my Humble opinion they both look too much like a Mamas Boys to pull this off. Sandmen are suppose to be killers, paramont to the Gestapo or the KGB if this part is cast incorrectly I believe this re-make will fail ...
Again its just my Opinion....

I agree -
and to go one step further...
the casting for this film must NOT include any of the actors currently working in any Teen Nick series, the WB, Disney Channel, etc. I think some young actors, such as Ashton Kutcher, have begun to break out of the young-actor TV mode and can make the leap over to serious films.
I just don't want this remake to turn into something like Beverly Hills 90210, or more recently - The OC - set in the future. I think (and hope!!) that Bryan Singer will look for fresh, new young talent to cast this film. As he did with finding the right young and upcoming actor for portraying Superman, it might be wise for him to do something similar here - given the very adult and violent world that is required for a film such as "Logans Run".
RunningMan -- you list some interesting casting choices,
but....
Paris Hilton as "Holly"???
*shudders with fear*
Logan_Five - May 18, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)
These are all GREAT suggestions!!
And Ron, there actually was a black person in the original movie (I think!). Here's an outtake photo, look at the far right of the picture and you can see an afro-headed black dude that looks like a younger Michael Jackson (pre-plastic surgery):

Book reader - May 31, 2005 03:12 AM (GMT)
The story in the book was the best to bring to film, and when I first saw the ad for the movie coming out back in 1976 I was thrilled! Then went to the movies to see it as a young man,I got mad about the changes they made to the storyline. As the years went on I grew to enjoy the movie they had made, but hoped someone would make a remake more closer to the book's story of 21 year old lastday,a whole world gone to the young [Not just a domed city!] after WW3,"Box" in his original setting, and the 2 main people "getting away from it all"!!!! I agree with the statements about very Young, unknown actors being used in the remake! :ph43r:

Hi Sabrina 5,
You've got some great casting ideas here.
I especially like Anthony Hopkins as Old Man, Reese and Kirsten as Holly13, and Joaquin Phoenix as Francis7 (hadn't thought of him in that role before, but it could work!). I also like your pick of Jude Law as Doc.
Also, I liked your comment on Dakota Fanning. It does seem like she's the only female child actress working in Hollywood today. I'm surprised she didn't show up somewhere in "The Village".
Again, some great suggestions ---
Francis 8 - September 5, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
I just don't think that a re-make should be done. Coming from the old school of science fiction and cinema in general, re-makes and re-imaginings spell poor box-office receipts and a quick death in the movie theaters. I don't want to see Logan's Run have its own version of Last Day. From an artistic point of view, that would just be terrible. However, that's my opinion. Some fans and movie goers may think differently.
The Running Man - December 8, 2005 11:24 PM (GMT)
Ok...now that Logan's Run is in pre-production its time to re-afirm some of my top choices for the various rolls, here's my choice for
Jessica. Emmy Rossum, I wish I had some better shots soon as I find some you can be sure that I'll post them.
DOB Sept 26 1986
IMHO she is perhaps the most beutiful actress in all of Hollywood, and very talented as well.
....She was accepted by the Metropolitan Opera when she was 7 years old, she performed in over 20 operas in six different languages, alongside figures such as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti....
....Her most notable movie rolls are
The Day After Tommorrow, and
The Phantom of the Opera. ...

....Get used to looking at her because even if she does'nt get the part, you'll be seeing alot of her over the net 20 years or so....
Logan5 - December 13, 2005 02:26 PM (GMT)
Hi Running Man,
Although Emmy Rossum is indeed a beautiful actress and I enjoyed both of those movies you mentioned very much, I think that the role of Jessica also needs someone that radiates a bit more strength and determination, more than what I've seen Emmy do in her previous movies.
In the book, Jessica is a strong, beautiful woman who does not just follow Logan around in his shadows all the time. If she has a chance to fight along side Logan, I think she definately would - she does rescue Logan from M.O.L.L.U. after all.
To add another name to the growing Jessica list, here's my current favorite pick to take on the role of Jessica in the remake....
Jessica Biel
Blade: Trinity
Stealth
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)
7th Heaven
Even though these films haven't been critically well-received - I think she'd really make a name for herself as Jessica in LR.
And if anyone doubts her beauty, check out:
http://www2.arnes.si/~jsubic5/Wallpapers/L...20Biel%2001.jpg
The Running Man - December 13, 2005 11:01 PM (GMT)
Logan5:
You might be right....Jessica Biel is a good actress and does possess a strength that might work for the re-make, and she aint bad lookin either...
....Ok, now for the second Leading role, and this one really scares the hell out of me. After reading your most recent post about the Brian Singer interveiw ( and listening to the interveiw ), I know that there is no way that the role will be given to Matthew McConaughey, he's too old. And after watching Hyden Christiansen try to act in the recent Star Wars I don't think I could bare to have him play Logan either. So I have to change my choice for Logan entirely ( and it probably won't be the last time ) Im not thrilled with the new crop of young actors coming up. So with much apprehention, and without any reason other than winning by default I will opt for
Ryan Phillippe, he was decent in Crash, and he was decent in Cruel Intentions, so for the time being he's my pick.. :dunno:
Logan5 - December 16, 2005 01:21 PM (GMT)
Logan5 is a very tough pick for me. Several years ago when the remake was first emntioned, I thought Matt Damon would make a good Logan -- then Leo Dicapprio. But now, six years later, they're both too old.
I haven't seen any of Ryan Phillip's work so I can't really comment on that.
I just think the role of Logan is going to be a tough one to fill now and have no idea who could pull it off.
MaryMary5 - December 19, 2005 02:18 PM (GMT)
Here are some of my choices:(I'm trying to account for the book age and the movie age)
Logan: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhall, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Brad Pitt, Ryan Phillipe or Colin Farrell
Jessica: Jessica Biel, Linda Hamilton, Robin Wright Penn, Keira Knightly, Kate Winslet or Jennifer Garner.
Francis: James Marsters, David Boreanez, Ben Affleck, Jared Leto, or Michael Varten
Doc: Val Kilmer or Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Holly: Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Geller, Alicia Silverstone or Brittany Murphy
Old Man: Anthony Hopkins, Paul Newman, Kurt Russell or Tim Robbins.
The Running Man - December 19, 2005 10:58 PM (GMT)
I like your picks MaryMary5, but you have the same problem with your picks as I had with my original line up... "Age"...In fact I think I had Brad Pitt as one of my original choices, along With Edward Norton, Mark Walberg and Mathew McConaughey. Because it appears they are going to decrease the age for the new movie to somewhere around 25, it pretty much wipes out my original choices. I like your Val Kilmer pick, Vals a great actor but again, I think he's gettin close to 40...I also like Michael Biehn, but one again he's gettin up there in age. I know we've discussed this before, but I'm gonna say it one more time. I really wish Brian Singer would reconsider his age desicion, it seriously limits his acting pool.... :deadhorse:
Logan 3(by the book!) - March 4, 2006 06:35 AM (GMT)
All the choices are good so far as to keep the age to the book .. as well as the rest .. to the book .. so I say use Christian Bale for Francis/Ballard as you know one in the same anyway. He is not too old for Ballard and can look young enough for Francis. Ryan is a good choice for Logan 3 as well(by the book!), he was good in Cruel Intentions. On a comical side use Tom Cruise for Box, remember him from TAPS he can be good at insanity :D . Natalie Portman is good for Jessica. As for supporting cast: ie doc .. holly .. etc .. use newcomers. Dont overkill high dollar actors for this one the book will sell the movie. If the remake does as well as it can if done right, I am positive Logans World can be made into a movie as well. Logans Search, nah was a good followup book but having to re create everything would be like Back to the Future 2  Well good luck finding the right actors and writing up the right script. I just hope this board is taken into consideration before filming begins, let the fans make the movie!
Logan 3
Aquarius 8 1971
(been a runner long long time  )
Lee 13 - March 15, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
I'd love to see Rutger Hauer as the old man. It would give the character a wilder edge, and I'd rewrite it a little, so he kills Frances to save Logan.
I'd like to see someone fresh and unknown play Logan and Jessica.
David4 - March 18, 2006 08:29 PM (GMT)
I think Hugh Jackman would make a great Francis. He has alot of the same qualities as Richard Jordan, not to mention a resemblance.
David4 - March 20, 2006 12:33 AM (GMT)
How about Sean Connery as the Old Man? Connery could bring his own twist to the role.
STICK MAN - April 19, 2006 02:26 AM (GMT)
If he was a few years younger i think that Jude Law would make a great Logan. And i have no problem with Jessica Biel playing Jessica.
As for Francis i would have to say Adrien Brody
Just my opinion
The Running Man - April 21, 2006 08:57 PM (GMT)
I like Hugh Jackman, and Jude Law, but like Matthew McConaughey, they would have both been sent to Carosel by now... :rip:
David4 - April 26, 2006 04:47 AM (GMT)
It's really tough to cast roles in a remake because the original actors are regarded so highly that the new actors have that much more to live up to.
monolith21 - April 26, 2006 05:11 AM (GMT)
I think they should go with unkowns for a good portion of the cast. Maybe not with soemone like Francis though. The Villain has a harder job I think so they should go with someone we know. Does that make any sense?
Logan3 - April 26, 2006 05:52 AM (GMT)
Francis was the villian?? since when? He was following order and the law and doing what he did best. The only villian is the thinker and those that programmed it after the little war. Logan tried to reason with Francis in Old Washington in the movie but the evil of the lifeclock caused him to have to kill Francis for his own survival. Truly if there was a villian it should have been Logan if you think about it ... he was ordered to seek out and destroy Sanctuary and was doing a damn good job until they met Box. He was leading Jessica on a lie as a runner to find and destroy Sanctuary, as per the book as well, destroy Sanctuary before his time was up. As he progressed his knowledge of the truth also progressed until he realized HE was the villian and changed. I just hope before the remake is started it gets a new producer and director as what I have read I do not want a remake, I want to see the book brought to life. crazy horse ... death at 21 ... devilsticks ... sleepshops ... the thinker ... William Nolans dream on screen not a directors idea that he wants to portray. Let this director make Logan's World or Logan's Search instead.
monolith21 - May 5, 2006 09:20 AM (GMT)
I agree that Fracis was not really a traditional villian...but he was definitely an antagonist to the story. It's heartbreaking to watch in the movie because we've seen these two characters as the best of friends and even as he is dying that friendship is still there. I would also agree that Logan was a villian for half of the story...but that doesn't really let Francis off the hook now does it? "They were just following orders" doesn't stand up all that well. True they didn't really know any other way to live, but I still view the runners as those who are seeking the truth, and the Sandmen the ones who are living a lie.
Personally, I can't wait for this remake. Would I rather a sequel? Sure. In the hands of ANY other director I wouldn't want to see a remake made. Singer hasn't let me down once yet. The man has a healthy respect for the property and it's fans.
He has a tough job though. The original movie has become every bit a part of popular culture and Science Fiction as the book if not more. As such there are certain things people expect to see in something titled "Logan's Run." Finding the balance between the two is the real trick, and Singer has said that he will try to do just that.
If the project goes to anyone else I doubt I will be watching it. I'll just put in my DVD and bask in its glory. I've had too many of my favs ruined in remakes by people who don't understand or even care about the originals. Needless to say I'm not the biggest fan of the new Battlestar Galactica.
The Running Man - November 13, 2006 05:59 PM (GMT)
There has'nt been much discussion on this lately so I think I'll reiterate some of my earlier choices..
Logan ...Ryan Pillippe
Jessica...Emmy Rossum
Old Man...Michael York
Holly ...Paris Hilton
Francis ...Jamie Bamber

The Jury is still out on Francis, and Logan...but these are my pics ATM. :D

I could see Steve Buscemi as Box -- the half-man, half-machine, ex-child-torturer from the novel, that is. He'd be wicked-good.
If they stick closer to the MGM robot-version, then it's all about the voice, so. . .uh, Morgan Freeman? Forest Whitaker? James Earl Jones?
Let's face it: Roscoe rocked.
Likewise, I can't imagine anyone today matching Jenny as Jess. (Sigh. . .)
The Running Man - December 14, 2007 05:35 PM (GMT)
Ahhh...Cool, a third nomimation for Paris, I love it.
