Title: Floating in Carousel?

:wave2: Hi everyone!

I wondered what everybody's opinion might be on what was supposed to be happening when the people in "Carousel" started to float? The movie doesn't seem to contain any "paranormal" type events- it's futuristic, and some of it may be pretty far-fetched, but nothing seemed entirely impossible to me (except for that scene). The people seem to be on an open platform, and not in any sort of a vacuum or anti-gravity chamber. There is no indication that air is blowing them upwards, and they all go up at different intervals. I think at some point in the film, people make reference to "hoping they can get up", or something along those lines - leading you to believe that the people in the movie have been introduced to the concept of having "faith" that they'll rise and renew. But what in your opinion IS actually happening? I mean obviously their "faith" isn't floating them up there? It didn't make any sense to me that people in the future could suddenly defy gravity for no apparent reason. What are other people's thoughts on this scene?

Hi Lori,

I believe Carousel _did_ involve some sort of anti-gravity device as you
mentioned, but I can't remember where I read or heard this. It's probably
discussed during the commentary track on the dvd/laserdisc. I believe
director Michael Anderson talks about the "laser cone" visual effect that
envelopes and then levitates the Lastday participants.

You're absolutely right! I just went back and watched this scene again, and a mist-like curtain encircles the platform for a few seconds. I don't know why I didn't notice that before. Thanks for your reply!

I think it's supposed to be that energy field that descends over them. Before that happens you see the crystal light up overhead - I assume that's the emitter for it.

It sort of looks like they have Sandmen taking potshots at them as they float, as they effect is that same as a gun blast.

Like shootin' ducks in a barrel.... :D

If you look closely, you can see the wires suspending them. Maybe you aren't supposed to see the wires, but just maybe the audience at carousel wasn't supposed to see them either. They could hook up the wires in the "holding rooms" and the ones who reach last day are not let onto this secret until they are ready to go. Heck, they wouldn't be around to tell anyone about it later anyway ;)

The energy curtain came down so the floaters would not be floating all over the arena (that would suck, wouldn't it?)

It looks like they are able to control gravity in this time. Look at the Love Shop - it looked like it was like trying to move in water LOL, so on Carrousel I guess they just turned gravity off altogether - like Cathedral says - shooting ducks in a barrel.

Want to see an interesting sequence on how the Carrousel scene was done?

Thank you :)

There is also:

Advance Preview Reel

shown to theatre owners to get them to book the movie into their theatre. Contains basic plot synopsis with scenes not in the actual film.

Deleted opening scene

Deleted: Yellows running into Logan & Francis

Maybe those yellows are practicing to be runners? ;)

Ass On Fire

I will never watch that scene without seeing that red in the background with his you-know-what on fire!
