Title: Last photos of the Great Hall, RIP
Huxley - October 11, 2006 12:19 PM (GMT)
Nems12 has convinced me to post what are probably the last pics of the Great Hall before its demolition last Feb. Although I took these shots months ago, I was embarrassed to show them due to the quality and the POV angles. I wasn't able to take any balcony shots because all the levels had already been gutted, and I had to use my back-up camera, so all the shots appear brutally dark. Not to mention that upon arriving I realized I was unable to locate some of the key movie scenes in the Hall, at least compared to Nems12's awesome Pics.
Anyway, I'll send Nems12 the rest of the shots, I hope everyone enjoys them. Linked below is a teaser. FYI the last shot is DS HQ, which, although Exxon did grant me access, I had to miss due to a tight schedule. Next year, the Water Gardens in FW.
Regards,
Hux

What a wonderful slideshow, Huxley! Thanks for sharing your images with us here.
I hope you and nems12 are able to share the rest of them with us, as well.
I've got several pictures that a fellow Dallas Logans Run fan has sent me showing the demolition of the Apparal Mart which is happening as we speak.
I'll post these images soon to this thread here. Check back again soon....
It's very sad --
The Great Hall experiencing LAST DAY ---- precisely THIRTY years after the film's opening (1976)....
Ironic - ain't it??? :(
The Running Man - October 11, 2006 08:26 PM (GMT)
That was excellent Huxley, and also very sad. I'm sorry I never got a chance to see it... Perhaps I've missed an earlier post in which it was explained, but can anyone tell me why they demolished this beautiful building?? :dunno: . Its like a peice of cinematic history has been destroyed and I'm extremly un-happy about it. :(

Here are a few of the demolition shots that our Texas friend David S has sent us showing the current state of the famed Dallas Apparel Mart - location for many of the Logan's Run interior shots including the Great Hall, the Logan and Francis runner hunting scene after Carrousel and the final climatic return to the Domes scene where Logan and Jessica scream to the Citizens to not go to Carrousel and show that their crystals have gone clear!!
I'm sure you will notice that exact location in these depressing pictures.... :(
David took these photos on October 8, 2006 in Dallas!
And now -
Last Day
The Dallas Apparel Mart -
Year of the City - 2006 (ironically, 30 years after Logan's premiere (1976))
Enter the Carrousel..........
This is the time for Renewal!!

No one has to die at Thirty -- You can live!! LIVE!!! And grow old!!

We've been outside -- there's a whole world outside!!

Carrousel is a LIE!!! The Lifeclocks are a LIE!! There is no renewal!!!

Only DEATH!!! :rip:

Again ---
Special Thanks to David S for sharing his photos with us....

The gentleman who gave me the tour was a VP of property management for the Dalllas World Trade Center. His explanation was that they felt the building was too dated to draw any interest from the Dallas public. The Great Hall was a great venue for Wedding, fashion shows, and the like, but what I think hurt them as a corporation was the huge amount of retail space that remained empty in the area surrounding the Hall. I took a side entrance into the Great Hall and the dozens and dozens of leasing units that were empty was quite telling. So, a sad surprise, but an understandable one, from a fiscal point of view.
Yes, it hurts looking at these pictures of the demolition, no question. As fans, if you have any interest of visiting these great sites of Logan's Run, at least those that still remain, DO IT NOW! You won't regret it, and the people or organizations that own these sites seem to be quite receptive to the idea of letting rabid LR fans visit them, but Nems12 may be better able to attest to that, as he been to seemingly all the sites that still remain.
I will be doing the rounds again the second week of Feb, anyone wanting to make it into a LR fan tour let me know!

Great commentary, Logan5. A fitting eulogy to a grand building. RIP.

Ironic! The Great Hall is now the best home for Old Man's cats... hehehe!
Seriously, this is very sad.

From a fan of LR "and" architecture - this is truly a sad event. The Great Hall was so unique and beautiful. It was a modern and award winning design that wonderfully represented the optimism of the late 60's and early 70's. This is a great loss. On a personal side - like many others, I had always hoped to see it one day.
While I can understand the reasoning behind it's destruction, I believe in hindsight it was a huge mistake. Obviously it was a tough decision, since the Hall remained untouched long after the remaining areas were dismantled. It is too bad they did not preserve the Great Hall structure and renovate around it.
Thanks for all the last pictures!

Hey guys. This is David S. I'm the one that took the pictures. I drove by there again yesterday and they haven't done anymore to it. It creeps me out to drive by and see those futuristic windows where the balcony once stood for Michael York's famous "Return" scene. It's almost as if I can see the scene going on right before my eyes. I talked to a lady at the Dallas Market Center last week and she said the entire building is coming down. She said that it might just be made into a parking lot. All vendors have been moved to another building and they are renovating the "Trade Mart" building now which will include a new HALL of some sorts. Not sure how much longer it will stand. The famed "Sandman HQ" building is just down the way. I'm distraught by the destruction of this building. The HALL was a beautiful site to behold. I'm wondering what happened to the sculptures inside. The bronze SUNDISK sculptures which are visibly seen in the film have probably been sold to a collector I'm sure. And the other art as well.

So sad that it is being torn down.
Thanks for the pics David.

Thanks for the pictures David. Has the demolition of Apparel Mart been completed?
David S. - November 15, 2006 08:11 PM (GMT)
Oddly enough, it is still standing as in the pics as of 11/14. I drive by it quite a bit. Not sure what they are doing. I wish I could get a piece of the white textured wall that's left. Wonder if there is a way? Maybe I can figure it out.

Thanks for the information. I was just curious of the current state - the Great Hall being torn down (or at least partially torn down for now) is certainly a bit depressing.
Good luck in obtaining a souvenir - hope you can get something.

If you are going to get a souvenir, go big! I'm sure us fanatics here would each love a $5 piece of the Hall. :D

When I was there in Oct 2005, there was discussion that the West Atrium (Arcade) might be torn down. When I heard this, I suggested to the lady from the DMC who was showing me around, that they take some of the distinctive features (like sections of the mirrored wall or the odd raised sections of wall) and couple them with certificates of authenticity (on official DMC letterhead with a signature from the DMC CEO). Then put these on ebay and watch 'em sell. I recommended that they only list one item at a time on ebay (don't want to saturate the market all at once). I figured there are lots of folks beyond our group who may not be hardcore LR fans, but would still love to purchase a real movie set piece. Initially she and I were just kinda joking about the idea, but then she became genuinely interested. She explained that one of her responsibilities is to gather donations from DMC exhibitors which are then given to local charities. She figured that the money from the ebay auctions could gather and then the DMC could present the sum to a local charity (and gain some nice PR in the process). As I left she was thinking aloud, naming folks within the company that she would gather to suggest this auction idea.
Alas, it didn't happen. But I can tell you there was genuine interest at least from her.
As someone else already mentioned, the Great Hall contained many pieces of artwork (sunflower sculptures, horse sculpture, giant tapestry, etc). All of this can be seen in the film if you know where to look. I would love to know what happend to that stuff. Any one of them, coupled with a film still and certificate of authenticity, would gain much interest at a movie prop auction.

Guys, I'm going to see what I can do to get pieces of the "window wall" from the Great Hall. There is a construction company telephone number posted really big on the site. I'll give them a call and see what I can do. I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't let me have some of it if they are going to just throw it away. The ultimate would have been to be able to get some of the artwork that hung in the hall. Especially the bronze sun disk sculptures that are clearly seen in the film. I'll keep everyone posted.

Hello everyone,
As a kind of final note to this, here is a web page addressing the recent destruction of the Great Hall and Apparel Mart. The last picture show the empty site where the structure once stood.
Here is the link:

Pike:
Thanks for the article regarding the Hall. Yes, I drove by there the other day and realized the entire thing was now down. It looked as though they already have a parking lot there. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is what it looked like.
I tried to get portions of the "wall" that was left but could never get anyone to return my calls. Alas, another fabulous movie site gone!!
nems12 - February 7, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
The link below is all the pics I took during my visit in Oct 2005. You've seen the first two before, but the rest should be new. I know...I was fool for not taking more pics, but at the time I really thought I would be able to return for another visit.
Great Hall in Oct 2005. :rip:

Huxley mentioned a LR tour....does this happen on an annual basis? I think it's a great idea for a LR gathering - tour the locations, have viewings of the movie and TV series, games, Dinners, etc.
It could be held at a median grade hotel, nothing too expensive but one that could accomodate a few dozen fans and meeting rooms.
Sounds like a GREAT weekend to me!! Where do I sign up? :D
Logan5 - December 8, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)
This is a great idea! We tried arranging a meeting here several years ago in the Dallas/Ft Worth area (central location in the US, many scenes from LR were filmed there, etc) but it didn't work out so well.
People's plans fell through - not enough interest - etc. etc.
Maybe sometime in the near future we can try this again.
