Title: Ice Sculpture Scene Question

MaryMary5 - January 31, 2005 02:31 PM (GMT)
I know I was only 11 when I saw this movie (back in 1976), but I swear the scene with Box carving the ice sculpture was in it. Is that possible, or am I going senile at 39? ;)

Hi MaryMary5.

The only place I know where the Box Ice Sculpture Scene was actually screened for an audience was on May 7, 1976 in San Diego, CA at a special Logan's Run advanced preview - a couple weeks before the movie was officially released nationwide.

This particular special presentation of "Logan's Run" was the most complete version ever to be shown theatrically back in '76 and lucky for us, someone was able to sneak a small cassette player into the screening room, so that at least we have the audio perserved of this very special Logan's Run screening.

After this screening, the film went through numerous cuts and revisions, many to ensure that MGM would get a PG rating for this film, and many more to cut the film down to a 2-hour running time. After these cuts, Logan's Run soon became the version that we see today.

Now ---

This special audio presentation of Logan's Run Uncut is hosted over at Virtual Vikki's Logan's Run website at:

http://www.snowcrest.net/fox/loganmovie/index.htm

The portion that contains the cut Ice Sculpture scene IN IT'S ENTIRITY is the one labeled "Part III". It's a whopping 27MB, and is a very slow download - but very worth the download in the end!!

For those that don't have the patience or technology for this large download, below is my transcribed text of the actual dialogue from this audio presentation.

I'll begin it where Logan and Jessica pose nude for Box while he starts sculpting them in the background.

**************************************

(Actual Spoken Dialog between Logan and Jessica while they are posing nude for Box's sculpture in the Special Advance Preview version of Logan's Run):

Jessica: Why did you want to send me back? Was it because you were going to return to the city all along?

Logan: That was the plan. I've been ordered to find out where the runners have gone to... locate this Sanctuary and destroy it. That's why I brought in the Sandman that killed your friends. Jessica..... Jessica..... you do know that it was my fault that killed them?

Jessica: Yes (sadly).... and now you're one of us, aren't you?

Logan: Yes... I think so. I don't know what I think. But I do know what I feel. I wanna be.... free. And I find I.... I need YOU.

(They kiss long and passionately as Box finishes his sculpture and declares....)

Box: Well... What do you think? Superb, is it not? (showing off his Ice sculpture to Logan and Jessica)

Jessica: It's glorious!

Logan: Alright, now keep your part of the bargain....

Box: Very well - follow me. This way....

(and Box leads them to the frozen runners)

btw....... I was 11 too when I first discovered Logan's Run back in '76. Now approaching 40 -- OMG --- still can't believe that one!!!

I believe "Logan's Run" was officially released theatrically in the US on June 23, 1976 nationwide - in it's present 'cut' form.

Thanks for the info Steve. I guess I only imagined seeing it, but however I saw it - it was great. I saw it in Philadelphia, on July 3, 1976. My cousin and I went to one of the few "old"theaters left in the city. The screen was huge.

Anyway, thanks again.

I too seem to remember seeing a scene of the movie where there was brief nudity. I remember logan and jessica having to to change clothes in a very cold environment. Does anyone else remember seeing this?

Yes, tdub.

Right before Logan and Jess meet Box in the Ice Caves, Logan and Jessica strip down and wrap themselves in some animal furs to stay warm.

It's right before this scene...

This was the second film I saw that year that featured female nudity in a PG rated movie. The other film was King Kong with Jessica Lange.

To an eleven-year-old boy at the time, this was something special indeed!! :D

The Sculping Scene was cut from the nation wide release, it ended up on some cutting room floor then lost forenver, also lost was the openning sceen were aparently Francis hunts down a runner and kills him, as well a few minutes were cut out of the Love shop sceen. The only indiction that the Scupting scene ever existed is prensent the current version. If you look in the top left corner of the screen just as Logan and Jessica are leaving the Ice Cavern you can make out the Ice Scupture of Logan holding Jessica. Im glad they left it in....but its a shame the footage was lost.

Run Runner !!!

Do you think it is possible that the staff at MGM or WB will put back in all of the edited footage from the film? I have heard from various people that the footage was still in existence. I've also heard that the footage was destroyed after it was edited from the picture. Who is right and who is wrong concerning the edited footage and its present condition?

Of all the scenes cut from the movie, this loss makes me saddest. :(

The Box/Ice Cave scene blew me away even in its edited form (I was 14), but how magnificent it would have been with the posing and the sculpting and the reveal! My guess is that the edit had less to do with running time than with the combination of nudity & necking. This was 1976: you could get away with nudity (Jessica disrobing), and even with VISUALLY DISTORTED nude necking (be it in the Love Shop, or L & J in the pond, underwater, just before they discover Washington D.C.), but NOT with nude necking out in the open. That's just too close to -- egad! -- sex.

Blame our culture's Puritanical roots. Hey -- maybe those free-love Domed City-zens were onto something...? ;)
