Title: LOGAN'S RETURN - A Brief Synopsis
Description: Fourth Adventure in the Logan Series

Logan5 - January 8, 2005 03:03 AM (GMT)
Back in the summer of 2000, William F Nolan released his latest Logan adventure, "Logan's Return" - a short story that was only available at the time for purchase as an ebook.

Presently, it is only available for purchase through WFN's longtime bookseller Paul Kennedy in typed manuscript form.

"Logan's Return" tells the story of Logan, Jessica and their eight-year-old son living with other 'Wilderness' people in the Angeles Complex on Earth. The Thinker who had controlled Earth's population has long since been destroyed and the people of Earth are still learning how to live with each other in peace in this strange, changed world.

Logan has been having recurring nightmares of himself as a Sandman again, running through Los Angeles Complex - hunting runners. The dreams are so real and haunting to him, that he is afraid that they are a premonition of things to come. He is afraid that he will have to kill again. His wife Jessica (now pregnant with their second child) tries to reassure him that those days are well over with and that they can all finally live together as a family, in peace and safety.

Meanwhile, in Nassau Complex, a new and ruthless leader is emerging. His name is Stendar and he has recently built a large stadium for his people to watch enemy combatants fight to the death. But these combatants are not of Logan's and Stendar's time. They are warriors from Earth's long past history. Stendar has discovered a way to ressurrect them, so that they may fight each other to the death for the amusement of all his citizens!

Eventually, Stendar finds a way to lure his nemesis Logan out from the safety of Angeles Complex to also participate in his maniacal games.

"Logan's Return" also features appearances from a now, grown-up Mary Mary2 and a 'surprising' return of Jonath 4!

Back in 2000, William F Nolan had given our "World of Logan's Run" website exclusive permission to post the first chapter of "Logan's Return" online.

It is still available there to read. Just go to:

to read the entire first chapter!! :o

.... and have fun running all over again!

Hate to say it... but it sounds rather... ugh! I don't know why, exactly. As you mentioned on another post, it sounds like a TV episode of a bad cheesy 70s show.

I really disliked the introduction of a parallel universe into the Logan world, now we have resurrection of dead gladiators, etc.

And does this fall after the three novels, or in between "Run" and "World,", because the number of children Logan and Jessica have confuses me? They had Jaq on Argos, brought him back to Earth, and then in "Logan's World,"

Spolier Alert

Jaq is killed by the Borgias, then in "Logan's Search," Jessica is pregnant again.

I'll probably pop the 25 bucks for a copy, though. It is Logan, after all.

Mary-Mary is in "Logan's World" and "Logan's Search." In my review of "World," I don't mention her by name, I just refer to her as someone who remembers the kindness Logan and Jessica showed to her in Cathedral and helps them at the Thinker Complex.

End of Spolier

I'll eventually post my review of "Search" once I finish reading it. My mother is gravely ill, and we're having to commit her to a nursing facility, so I've not felt up to much light reading lately.

Sorry to hear about your mother, Sir Rhosis. I wish you and your family the best during this time.

To address your concerns on Logan's and Jessica's children:

Spoiler Alert

Logan and Jessica 'technically' have a total of three kids. Their first son, Jaq (born in Sanctuary/Argos), had been killed in Logan's World. Jessica then had another son, named Jaq2 after the events in "Logan's World" occured. He is still alive at the beginning of "Return". In "Return", as stated in my above post - Jessica is now pregnant again - making this really their third child.

The reason I stated it was their second child was to keep hidden the fact of the loss of their first son to the Borgia Riders.

Also, I didn't want to say the son's name (Jaq2) for fear of inferring that something happened to Jaq1.

End of Spoiler

Now that we allow spoilers, we can talk of such things. :)

When I first read "Logan's Return", I had just seen the movie "Gladiator" at the theater (and I suspect WFN did, too) - as this latest Logan adventure definately took on a look and feel of that successful film.

"Logan's Return" is a very quick read (it takes place after the events of "Search") and one can have it finished in less than an hour, I suspect. But IMO, it does compliment Nolan's overall Logan universe very nicely in that Logan's world is still coming to grips with the changes that have occured since the Thinker's demise - and that the world remains extremely dangerous with viscous gangs and evil 'leaders' still roaming about.

"Return" was first released in 2000 during the last reprinting of all of WFN's Logan novels through Virtual Publishing Company, and was done so to more-or-less add 'something new' for those longtime diehard Logans Run fans who haven't heard from Logan in close to 20 years!!

There has been talk that a new Nolan Logan novel may be in the works, timed with the release of the Warner Borthers remake. When we find out more, we'll be sure to post it both here and on our website.
