Title: Widescreen vs Pan & Scan

David4 - March 19, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
It was nice of MGM to put "Logans Run" in both formats on their DVD,but Widescreen is THE only way to appreciate that movie. Especially the exterior shots. So much is lost on Pan & Scan.
They had "Logans Run" on one of the Cinemax Channels a few weeks ago and it was in the Pan & Scan format. You would think Cinemax would understand that Widescreen is the only way to go.

Actually it was Warner Borthers who released the Dual Sided "Logan's Run" DVD disc with Pan and Scan on one side and Widescreen on the other.

The MGM DVD release only offered the Widescreen version.

And yes - for anyone who has never seen Logan's Run in WIDESCREEN format, they are truly missing almost half of the movie! In fact, just recently I went back to my old website and removed the old Pan and Scan VHS Logan's Run movie images I had on it since 1997, and updated them all with their WIDESCREEN DVD counterparts -

so I'm a little slow.... shhhhh

Yep,you're right. It was Warner Brothers. Not MGM. Alot of the pay movie channels are starting to show Widescreen, finally.
The exterior shots in Logans Run are awesome in Widescreen.
I put that double sided DVD of Logans Run in the player the other day so we could watch it and when the Pan & Scan version came on,I got up and said,"Oops, wrong side" and flipped it over.

Although a great fan of the magnificent LR, i still do not own a copy of the film on DVD, should i wait for a special edition version to come out which i understand may be soon.

Ernest Lazlo was nominated for an Academy Award for Logan's Run's Cinematography during the 1976 film season. His camera work for the film is outstanding!

And yes - at $5.99 for the LR DVD, I say go ahead and SPLURGE!! -- you do get both versions of the film (Pan and Scan AND Widescreen). You may not get P&S with the SE DVD - if they ever release it... (although I can't imagine anyone preferring P&S over WIDESCREEN anyway.........)

It's $6.99 online....

and although it just says 1.33:1 at this website, it does offer the film in Widescreen on the flip side (Anamorphic too!!!).

The current DVD of Logans Run is definately a must,Hudson. Logan5 is right in that they probably will only issue one version of the film on the Special Edition DVD coming out hopefully soon.
Gotta love the Logans Run Theatrical Trailer on that DVD! That and the Featurette from 1976 make the DVD a must-have.

I never knew I could flip it over and play a widescreen!
I watched the first 1/2 hour last night, and it makes it so much better. I can't wait till I see the rest of it.

There's so much missing from the view in Pan & Scan. Pan & Scan was created so widescreen films could be put on Tv and now that they're playing Widescreen on Tv they should consider Pan & Scan obsolite.

I finished watching the widescreen setting yesterday, and it is so much better.

Ice caverns were much more impressive.
actors not talking are in the scenes more
You could see that the knife Billy threw was a closer to hitting Logan and Jessica.
Many scenes (ice cave, the swim, love shop etc) were in better focus
You could see where Jessica's friends were hiding outside of catherdral
I could swear that some parts of the script changed. Is that possible?
anyway, thanks for getting me to take a look at the "other side" and see what I was missing.

There is no re-edit on either side of the disc. Both films are the same, except one is Widescreen and the other is Pan & Scan.

The special edtion laserdisc is still better than the two dvds that are out there.I think the print was better.Don't know why mgm never released all the laserdisc features on to the dvd.

David4 - March 23, 2006 05:50 PM (GMT)
Maybe when and if this Special Edition DVD comes out it will have all those Laserdisc Features on it,too. I'm curious to see if they found any of the missing footage at all.
