Title: Deleted Scenes
David4 - March 18, 2006 08:04 PM (GMT)
Are any of the deleted scenes from Logans Run still in existance or has MGM said that they are definately lost? The 30th Anniversary of "Logans Run" is coming this summer and I would think that MGM would want to cash in on that film by putting out a special edition for the Anniversary.
I know that at the "City of Domes" site they have a reconstructed version of the opening scene where Francis hunts and kills a Runner, but the start and the ending of that scene are missing.
At the same site, they used to have the audio from the uncut version of the movie insegments, but that, too,is no longer available.
I had heard somewhere that at Sci-Fi Conventions back in the late 70s and early 80s that there was footage from the cut Ice Sculpture scene of Jessica and Logan posing for the sculpture. If that's true, then someone somewhere has pieces of that footage.
The Cathedral Scene is a shame that they cut, too. Maybe with todays technology, they could edit in new special effects for the 'Muscle' sequence that was cut. I don't know if that footage even exists anymore.
It would be on the order of what George Lucas did to the Star Wars trilogy by adding new effects and re-inserting deleted footage.
Butdoes any of the cut footage still exist? And is MGM planning a re-release for the 30th Anniversary?
James 5 - March 18, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
As far as I've found out the cut footage such as the logan/jessica ice sculpture scene has been destroyed or lost forever - but we can live in hope. Their are some pictures from the cut scenes -http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dimension/5357/lost.htm and on the FSM soundtrack the score for the ice sculputure part is a track in itself.
It would be brilliant if MGM would do some collectors edition dvd or something along those lines but yet again we can only live in peace -- save from petitioning them or something :P I can't even get a region 2 (UK) dvd as it doesnt even EXIST for some odd reason :shake:

I know what you mean,James 5. With the approaching 30th Anniversary,we can only hope. Maybe MGM will come up with some of that lost footage for a special release. If the hype of the new movie would of already started in Hollywood,I think MGM would of started planning something for the original for this year as a result.
Logan5 - March 19, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
Hi David4. Welcome to the Circuit!
There was rumored to be a Two Disc Special Edition Logan's Run DVD released last year (2005), but no such release had even occured.
Also, I had heard other rumors back in 2004, that direcotr Michael Anderson MAY had done a NEW commentary for Logan's Run back then for a new Special Edition DVD. I haven't heard anything lately about this, but when I started seeing the current Logan's Run DVD in the bargain bins at Best Buy for $5.99, I thought a new DVD may be around the corner. But, alas - nothing has materialized as of yet
I'm beginning to think that if all of these rumors are true and since nothing has come to pass yet, then Warner Borthers may be holding out on this rumored SE DVD until the LR remake is done and release both the NEW SE DVD of the movie - and hopefully - the complete Logans Run TV Series DVD set.
Only time will tell I guess... :wallbash:
David4 - March 19, 2006 04:46 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the welcome,Logan5! I was very impressed by this site and had to join the circuit here. "Logans Run" is without a doubt my favorite movie of the 1970s. I hope, too, that this is THE year for Logans Run. With the new film on the horizon and the Tv Series hopefully getting it's DVD release,a DVD Special Edition of the original movie would be fitting. Deleted Scenes would be a great thing.
I was at a local "Media Play" and I saw "Logans Run" on DVD in their bargain bin for $5.99. There has to be a re-release in the near future.

:o All the cut footage including the Jessica nudie :censored: ice robot scene was seen in the Canadian Network Television version of the film shown the first time Sept '77 on CTV in Alberta. (maybe shown on CBC as well same version)
The uncut version was shown '77-'82 many times. I watched the film in '84 on ABC American station out of Spokane & seen the censored + edited for television american version so I thought, so I rented the VHS tape & the same thing: cut & hacked! I guess it was that way in the theatre in the U.S. version?! I never did have the pleasure of experiencing this masterpiece theatrically. I still wish I could've seen it presented in 70mm blow-up back in the day.
:wallbash:
The last time I got to enjoy the film in it's full uncut glory was in '82.
This uncut LR was shown about 7 times or so on Canadian TV & I tuned in everytime.
I had no VCR until late '83...
I'd thought I'd drop you guys a line on this while seeing about the possible remake. It might be possible to get the network tape or the backups from CTV (& /or CBC) if they still exsit. That old videotape lasts quite awhile, much higher grade than the crap that had been sold over the last 15 years.
It would be worth a shot for somebody to check into it if they have the time & dedication to try to find it even thought it may only be a Pan&Scan copy.
I remember many years ago director Richard Donner saying that most the unseen footage that he shot for the aborted version of Superman II was destroyed.
:dunno:
In 2006 it all turned up for the Director's Cut...
I'm past renewal.

I left a message to MGM on Amazon.com (kid's review instead of sign-up should take 24hrs. to be posted) about it in the DVD review.
I've read through the cut footage descriptions on the web & yes it was ALL in this Canadian broadcast version including my favorite part :censored: Oh Canada!
 Jenny Agutter, such beautiful angel in this film. Farrah was no match for her.
 I wish I was Box or Logan for that scene; it was unforgettable & my first rack seen on the tube (aside from the Love Shop stuff - much too fast & dark to focus in on).
:banned: Americans are scared of boobies on TV & especially back then, I'm sure glad we weren't!
Someone should take it up with MGM's DVD department & let them know if they really did lose or destroy any of this cut footage!
I'm going to watch LR right now. I hope these cuts turn up for the SE DVD this year!
Uncut - January 21, 2007 02:01 PM (GMT)
:excited: The Francis7 Opening Hunt Scene (I stopped recording with the brand new VCR off the American broadcast in '84 after I realized this scene wasn't happening/missing).
;) Arcade Talk
 some missing dialogue between Logan5 and Holly13 at New You #483 (this was another standout missing scene - the hallway/hairdresser type neon area are sitting down taking about Logan's new face).
:dunno: These include several more moments during the Love Shop scene
:angryfire: The Box Sculpture Scene (this was another really standout missing cut & many more gracious shots of Jenny embracing a lucky Mr. York).
:blahblah: There were quite a few small cuts as well throughout the film.
The CTV station broadcasting would've been CFRN to be more specific.
I hope this helps & good luck. :wave2:

 I watched my Logan's Run ws DVD again, geez I haven't watched it in years & eeeee- that print needs to be cleaned up very badly. I wish MGM could do a restored print - Hi-Def transfer with the deleted footage re-inserted.
I went through the scenes a little more carefully that were listed as cut here:
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dimension/5357/lost.htm :order: Yes, these are exactly it & nice to read such detail, very memory refreshing.
Plus, checked out Vikki's City of the Domes. I visited her site years ago once. Cool Lego's Run! I did drop her line about this uncut LR Can. TV ver. back then. I don't think she thought I was serious by her reply.
So many small cuts to the film & after reading through her characters listing I can recall most of the 'deleted' cast from the uncut version.
The New You had way more dialouge & the Love Shop extra footage is correct, the women's conversation in the Arcade + all in the Canadian TV version.
It was fun to revisit LR again & I guess we can only hope the 1976 film gets the proper treatment it deserves after 30 years + before we're all dead! I hope the remake is good because that would make the possibility of a SE DVD of the original film more likely.
:omg: As for the shortlived series; I would likely cringe if I saw it again as I haven't seen it since it originally went off air in the '70s.

Hi Uncut - Welcome aboard.
That's interesting about the Uncut version of LR being shown on Canadian TV. Someone up there has GOT to have a copy of it somewhere!! I'm just surprised that one has never surficed yet after all these years.
Vikki used to have the FULL AUDIO of the Uncut version of LR on her Website:
http://www.snowcrest.net/fox/logan/audio/index.htmlbut lately the links have been broken....
It was a joy to hear the full version of LR when those links were working. It would've been a LR Christmas if we also had the video :excited:
We've been trying to find a video copy for years but all we ever hear is that it's 'missing' and 'lost'.
I think that LR is loooooooooooong overdue for a new two disc SE DVD that includes these lost scenes and other goodies. If the internet fan base can take the time to recreate the Opening Francis Hunt Scene all by themselves (thanks nems12), I think Warner Bros can do even better!!!
If anyone hasn't seen it, check it out at:

I don't believe any of the cut footage is lost or destroyed & thanks for the welcome LoganFive. Without a doubt you are right about it being missing... & that's missing from the tray of our DVD players!
I know nothing came of this below, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth to this old flash from Vikki.
NEWS FLASH Lost movie footage found? This was sent to me in mid-March 02!
" I work in a dvd store in West Los Angeles right next to 20th Century Fox film Studios. So we get alot of actors and film producers that come in all the time. Anyway, the gentelman who put together the special edition of Logans Run for laserdisc came in and told me that just before they were done with the laserdisc they came upon this extra footage- Francis tracking down a runner at the beginning of the film and Jessica and Logan posing for box for an ice sculpture. But MGM told him it was to late to put it in the finished product. But that they would just wait until a new version was put out. But it was in the Laserdisc Newsletter and Widescreen Review that I actually saw it in print. Cant Wait."
3-23-02 Update No Further information. All the letters I wrote to DVD web sites and Widescreen Review have gone unanswered
These movie companies are so full of it & considering LR was MGM's most expensive film of that decade + 3 nominations by the Academy with 1 win. I just can't see them just stupidly throwing away any footage from this picture.
:wtf:
I understand that many of the top people from the film have said or believe that the cut footage is long gone. :dunno: I've heard that many times before about other films & this supposedly lost footage suddenly turns up when somebody sees a way to make some :rotf: bucks again. Just as MGM's completely lost footage from "Elvis:That's The Way It Is" did a while back for the re-cut & re-mixed redux SE version of the film on DVD. A remake would likely do it for the '76 film, even if the new version was not that successful.
Hopefully something soon motivates WB to remember :wallbash: where all this missing footage is exactly!
It would nice if the uncut Canadian TV (CTV air date range: 1977 - 1982) version of this unforgetable & essential 1976 classic would show up again while waiting, so it doesn't hurt to have a bulletin beacon for Canadian visitors. They could at least be informed to know to check their personal video tape collection again for this untampered with crystal jewel. You never know...
:surrender:

How great to hear that an uncut version was actually seen somewhere!
Does that mean that it might have been possible that I DID see these scenes when I first saw it in 1976, in Philadelphia? Or am I still delusional? LOl

Interesting, here's the info. from Vikki's site about the sneak preview:
The date is May 7th, 1976 and You Are There in San Diego CA for a special advance preview screening of the new motion picture form MGM called Logan's Run. OK, so you were not there, and you didn't get to see it, and shortly thereafter the studio hacked a ton of stuff out of the movie to make it shorter, and gain the film a PG rating. While the cut footage no longer exists (it vanished mysteriously along with the preview print)
If you did see what you believe; it's very likely that there were several sneak preview screenings for Logan's Run in many cities throughout the U.S.A. & Canada . It is not abnormal in anyway for this to happen either. I've personally seen sneak preview cuts, many times the film was slightly different, usually a little longer or in one rare case vastly different. This has occurred during the same point when the official rated cut had been released for the first time with many films throughout the late '70s - mid '80s that I've seen first hand. Why? I don't know the exact reason anytime this has happened, but it could be any number of reason listed:
#1 - The cinema had a sneak preview screening & when they received the official reel they did not bother to unpack it. Sheer laziness.
#2 - The cinema employees working the projector were keen of the fact that the sneak preview cut was longer, somewhat different & thought that would be the better of the two reels they had to show audiences.
#3 - The cinema employees did not realize that the sneak preview version was different at all & didn't feel the need to change the reel. The second one sent was viewed as a backup copy in case something happened to the one loaded on the projector.
#4 - The sneak preview cut was sent by mistake or due to supply issues by the distributor.
Here's my list of sneak preview version of films in the cinema I've seen during their first run theatrically. I've never seen this happen again with a film when it was re-released in the cinema much later & the official version was always used by that point. The only time I ever did actually see a sneak preview version when it was actually being sneak previewed was "SHORT CIRCUIT 2" & it wasn't any different than the official release.
All listed below were 70mm presentations. I believe all the films except ALIENS (only opening night) ran these sneak peek versions (could be called early prints as some of these films weren't previewed that I know of) for months as I would usually go see them again at these oddball cinemas.
#1 "THE BLACK HOLE" In December 1979 (Slightly longer, 1 scene of the footage released on DVD)
#2 "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" In May 1980 (Longer, alternate footage & never released)
#3 "OUTLAND" In May 1981 (Slightly longer, some alternate footage, longer footage seen on Canadian TV, the alternate footage was in the form of date/time wipes & never released)
#4 "STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN" In May 1982 (Slightly longer, alternate footage. Most of the footage seen on Canadian TV & partially released on SE DVD)
#5 "RETURN OF THE JEDI" In May 1983 (A tad longer, footage never released)
#6 "ALIENS" In July 1986 (Slightly longer, footage shown on Canadian TV & all footage including some not ever seen released on rare LE VHS & much later again on a SE DVD)
I noticed many other films being slightly cut down when they appeared on American television, videotape (VHS/Beta) or in the cinema compared to the Canadian TV versions I watched back in the day:
#1 LOGAN'S RUN (1976) - Canadian TV version longer compared to U.S. TV/tape (NA)
#2 SUPERMAN (1978) - Canadian TV version longer compared to tape (SE DVD)
#3 HALLOWEEN (1978) - Canadian TV version longer compared to tape (SE DVD)
#4 BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978) - U.S. TV episode versions of the film, longer compared to cinema/tape (DVD Series Box) also there were TELEFILM versions of the entire series shown on Canadian TV & many countries in Europe in 81/82 re-edited & alternate footage. (VHS Series Box PAL)
#5 BUCK ROGERS: IN THE 25th CENTURY (1979) - U.S. TV episode versions of the film, a bit different compared to tape (DVD Series Box)
#6 STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979) - Network U.S./Canadian TV version longer (SE DVD)
#7 SATURN 3 (1980) - Canadian TV version longer compared to tape/U.S. TV (DVD PAL R2)
#8 THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (1980) - Canadian TV version longer compared to tape (NA)
#9 DUNE (1984) - Canadian TV version longer compared to cinema/tape/U.S. TV (SE DVD)
This is not something that was extremely common, but it did happen quite often enough. I have heard or read many similar reports with some of the films I've listed & some that I didn't as well from many eyewitnesses over the years. I believe this type of thing never happens nowadays.
I call this phenomenon the movie mind :censored:
So simply put, it is not impossible you saw the uncut version of Logan's Run in 1976 theatrically in Philadelphia in my opinion. Of course, only you know whether or not this did in fact happen. That's unless you happen to know someone else that had the same experience as you at the same cinema during that timeframe that you can question their memory of the event if your really not sure if it was a delusion or not & no other evidence can be found.
:dunno:
You likely did see it.
:omg:
