Jazzily effective and even poetic. Logan's Run is fun!" -Vincent Canby, The New York Times

Long Island NY's Newsday had a fairly derogatory review of Logan in '76. To
this day I still remember the final sentence of the capsule (paragraph) review:
"It lacks just about everything necessary to be a good piece of science-fiction"!
<_< My mom had to define "lacks" for me (I was seven), but this wasn't enough
to deter me from seeing the film that summer! To be fair, the writer (Wayne
Robins) was Newsday's regular rock, not film critic, and I think he may have been
out of his element (although I came to later appreciate his music reviews).
I suppose the film's merits as sci-fi are debatable, but as entertainment it's still
my favorite. :D

I suppose Logans Run must be considered a Sci-Fi / Fantasy because it fits better in this catagory than any other... but its more a post appocalyptic vision of earth like many others films. Blade Runner, Solient Green, Metropolis etc...
Roger Ebert...
"Logan's Run" is a vast, silly extravaganza that delivers a certain amount of fun, once it stops taking itself seriously. That happens about an hour into the film, but even the first half isn't bad if you're a fan (as I am)..." he gave it 3 Stars... :)

I don't know how Logan's Run would be seen in 1976, but for me it continues being fascinating although it's certain that it has aged badly.

I think in general the critics liked the movie, and although some scenes look slightly dated, other scenes have held up really well. Like the Carosel Scene, this is some of the best special effects work ever done. It is as good or better than anything done today, and it is easy to see why it won an Academy award.

In special effects or scenery I believe that the best thing is the look of the desolate Washington DC. It's very real.

"...visual razzle-dazzle (that's) pyrotechnical enough for a dozen Fourth of Julys" - Charles Champlin of the LA Times

The Fall 1976 Issue of "Cinefantastique" really slammed "Logans Run",which I thought was undeserving. Some quotes;
"The Science Fiction Boom Begins With A Bomb".
"For a while ,it seems the film might work;the production values are good, the cast is attractive, and the melodrama competent, but when the film breaks in half, nothing can save it."
The amusing thing about that issue is that they not only put "Logans Run" on the full cover, but they dedicated 21 pages to it inside! Amazing!
I thought their criticism of the film was a bit over the top. They based their review mostly on compairing the book to the film, which is not a wise thing to do,considering how different they are.

Thanks Ron, Logan's Mego, Running Man, octopusmagnificens, George5, Logan5, Dave4 for those interesting quotes it's much appreciated. I'm gonna incorporate them all in my Movie Sounds website somewhere hopefully...if I get round to it... I think I might have to do a new page.
Cheers
