Title: any LR to visit while in Dallas?

Huxley - January 26, 2006 03:57 PM (GMT)
I'll be in Dallas next month for Con DFW 2006 on Feb. 24-26 and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions to visit former sets of Logan's Run. I would love to get some personal pictures for my own collection, but I'm quite unfamilliar with the area.

Some of this is covered in older message threads. Click on the links below.

Let's start with places that no longer exist. :(
The Loveshop interior
The Sandman Gym

Now let's take a look at places that still exist. :D
Logan's Apartment exterior & courtyard
Residence Pool & Outdoor Restaurant
The Water Gardens

I'll post info on the remaining locations as I get the time.

The “Zale Building” served as the exterior for Sandman Headquarters (a.k.a. DSHQ). The Zale Corporation which owned a national chain of jewelry stores, commissioned construction of the building in 1968 and it was completed in 1970. The building stands 18 stories high, and was sometimes referred to as the "Giant Jewel Box.” Zale Corporation occupied the building until 1984, when Zale moved its headquarters to their current location in Irving, Texas, just outside of Dallas.
The old address (when Zale occupied the building) was 3000 Diamond Park Drive, Dallas, TX 75247.

Today the property is owned and occupied by the Mobile Oil Corporation, and the address is now 3000 Pegasus Park, Dallas, TX 75247.

Note: Mobile Oil has constructed a fence around the perimeter of the property. Although you can view the building from afar (outside the fence), you will not be able to walk up the exterior steps (as Logan and Francis did) unless you make prior arrangements with Mobile Oil to escort you within the fence.

The lobby of a building in downtown Dallas served as the lobby for Sandman Headquarters. Conflicting information published at the time of the filming has lead to three possibilities. Fortunately all three buildings are next to one another. I believe that all three also share in a network of underground pedestrian walk-ways lined with shops that connect to each building’s lobby.
Someone, please visit all three and report back with your findings (I would love to narrow this down to the correct one).

Renaissance Tower (known in the ‘70s as the First International Building)

Elm Place (known in the ‘70s as the First National Bank Building)

Note: Dealey Plaza, the site of JFK’s assassination, is only 3 blocks away so you might want to walk over there while you are in the area. To find it, continue west on Elm St. It is just beyond the left hand edge of the map above.

Thanks for the great information. I guess there's one location that I would really like to visit, which I believe would be the location of the Great Hall, which is; the West Dallas Apparel Mart, or the Dallas World Trade Center; This is pretty unclear to me. From what I can gather, this location is not open to the public, but what I want to do is to re-confirm this, to make sure this is still the case. I'd appreciate it is anyone knows of the location, and current name and address of this site.

I'd also like to visit the Watergardens, but I'm not sure how far it is from Richardson.

Water Gardens
1502 Commerce St
Fort Worth, TX 76102

...which is 44 miles from Richardson, TX. Should take around an hour to get there. You can get directions from Google Maps.

I'll post info regarding the DMC Apparel Mart shortly.

nems12 - January 27, 2006 11:53 PM (GMT)
The Great Hall and West Atrium (known in the film as "Arcade") both reside within the Apparel Mart building. This building is part of the DMC (Dallas Market Center) campus. This is the same DMC campus that also contains the World Trade Center building. However, unlike the World Trade Center, no portion of the Apparel Mart is open to the public.

A couple years ago, the DMC stopped using the Apparel Mart for wholesale exhibition. Although the Great Hall is still occasionally rented out for large private gatherings, the remainder of the building is vacant. As of October 2005, the West Atrium was being readied for possible remodeling or demolition.

So how does a Logan fan get inside? Well, I can only suggest what worked for me: E-mail the DMC in advance of your trip. Be as professional and polite as possible. Explain your love for their building and how much it would mean to you to see it. Provide a range of days that you will be in the area and could accomidate their schedule. Explain a little bit about who you are and from where you are traveling. Explain that you are only asking for yourself to be admitted and that you will not take up more than one hour of their time.

If you are lucky enough to be granted access, please remember: Children are not allowed at the DMC. Also, the DMC is a place for wholesale business so dress "business casual." Remember the name of whomever escorts you around, and send them a "thank you" card or flowers after the fact. This will help ensure that the DMC remains receptive towards Logan fans in the future.

Good luck, and don't forget to post some pics here!

Well, I'll give it a shot. I've already contacted Mobil Oil about the exterior of DSHQ, so let's see if if I can go 2 for 2. (or 0 for 2)

Thanks, and wish me luck :)

Huxley - January 31, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
What's pretty cool is if you put the DSHQ address into Google maps you can see the top of this building and the raised ridges along the face of the front of it using the sattelite option.

I got a prelimenary response from Mobile; saying that they'll look into allowing me access to that site.

Huxley - February 6, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
Here is a portion of a response I got back from DMC:

"The West Atrium at the Apparel Mart is in the process of being
demolished, but the Apparel Mart will be intact through the first of
March. "

Yes, I have recieved permission to visit, but the question is, is this still worth visiting? Where other parts of the movie are shot in the Apparel Mart besides the West Atrium? What role did the Great Hall have in the movie? I'd appreciate it if you could clarify what may still be worth seeing at this site, and if so I will set up the tour.

Next is a follow-up with Mobile to see DSHQ, which is looking good too.

The Running Man - February 6, 2006 08:58 PM (GMT)
Huxley....If you are successful in your endeavor please take lots of pictures, especially since its going to be demolished...

Trust me. Within this message thread, I have covered every location in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. None are left out.

Don't miss a chance to visit the Great Hall. In my opinion, it is the "crown jewel" of Logan sites. You can see how it looked when I vistied in this message thread.

Click on the names below for more pics of the two Apparel Mart locations.

I recommend printing out pics (of various angles from the movie) for all locations (especially the West Atrium) and taking them with you. Maybe put together a folder or something. Being able to reference pics from the movie, while you are at the actual location really helps you quickly zone in on where and how they filmed. It also helps you recreate the motion picture camera's point of view, when taking your own modern pictures.

Huxley - February 8, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)
Thanks to Nems12 the date has been set. I'll take as many pictures as I can. I guess I'll have to pull my sandman uniform out of storage and have expansion panels put in, in time for the tour. (sic)

Huxley - February 10, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
2 for 2! I'll be visiting Deep Sleep Headquarters on the same day, which is 2 minutes from the Great Hall. Exxon very kindly has allowed me access to this building. As for the rest of the LR sites, I'd like to see them but my time in Dallas will be limited. I'll keep you updated.

nems12 - February 10, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
Huxley,
That's awsome about being 2 for 2.

Be aware that you can easily visit four locations within a two mile drive.

For example, if you start by visiting these two (they are only a couple blocks apart):
1. DMC World Trade Center (Residence Pool & Outdoor Restaurant)
2. DMC Apparel Mart (Great Hall & West Atrium)

Then it is only a mile down the road to:
3. Mobile Oil (DSHQ)

And then another mile to:
4. Park Stemmons (Logan's Apartment exterior & courtyard)

Here you can see all four buildings in the same picture:

Huxley -- you are going to have an awesome time! Please be sure to take plenty of pictures for the rest of us!!

Huxley - February 13, 2006 08:58 PM (GMT)
Thanks. I would like to spend more time on this project, but I really am just in Dallas for a convention. (although doing ANYTHING in Dallas during this time of year is better than staying in Toronto).

Little bit of scare last Friday night. I got an email from the contact I am supposed to meet at the West Apparel Mart, stating; "Sorry I missed you, I waited for an hour but I guess you had flight issues." I felt akward replying that I am not scheduled to arrive until the 24th, as stated in my earlier emails, because I didn't want to disenchant anyone that is doing me a favor. I was relieved of this reply however due to a CC from the West Apparel Property manager herself reminding the contact that he did not read the email properly. So, that visit is still on, Thank Voot.

I'm going to both locations on the Friday afternoon, just before I get the autograph of the Red balding extra that appeared in 3-4 scenes.

I'd wager that he's still there at the Mall, awaiting the 'go' on the remake and his chance to appear in every Mall scene again!!

Huxley - February 26, 2006 05:50 AM (GMT)
Well, I was at the Apparel Mart yesterday, but due to my flight being late I missed the DSHQ building, although I took a couple shots from the highway. Considering that the demolition starts next week, DMC was very accomadating; in fact a VP gave me the tour himself. Save for the great hall itself, the building is almost a shell, so much so it is no longer possible to reach the upper floors. Still a thrill though to actually be in the great hall! If I had more time here in Dallas I would view other sites but this CONDFW is a blast; it's a been a completely informal weekend at the Con between fans and authors like John Steakley, F. Paul Wilson, and Jany Wurts; I've even went to a steakhouse with Steakley and Wilson via limo!

I digress. Thanks for the info which allowed me to make this journey possible. It would be great if more LR fans could see the hall but DMC told me that no more tours are possible. RIP Great Hall, you'll exist forever in the movie and our imaginations....

Huxley,
You mean everything in the Apparel Mart is being torn down? I understood that the West Atrium was being torn down, but the Great Hall as well?

Yes, the Great Hall and the entire building will be torn down starting next week. Where the west atrium used to be is now a large excavation. DMC told me that they just couldn't rent out enough space anymore to justify the overhead. We had to enter the mart via a side entrance and during a 5-10 minute walk to the Hall we passed through entire areas that no longer had lighting; the guide had to use a flash light, causing an eerie but thrilling effect. Whole areas have been gutted throughout the entire 1.2 million square foot facility. The Hall itself is the only area still untouched, but this will change too. I'll post pics later.

When I was there last October, there was talk that the West Atrium might be torn down, so that doesn't suprise me. However, the Great Hall was still in use and everyone seemed to think that it would be around for some time to come. Now less than 5 months later it is on its' last leg. Wow, I'm in shock. :(

My only regret from my visit is that I was sooo excited to be there, I hardly took any pictures (and some are blurry). Here are the last pictures of the West Atrium. I'll leave it to Huxley to post the last pics of the Great Hall. :rip:

Click here for my West Atrium pics.
In picture #3, notice a spot of sunlight on the floor? That is the exact spot where the giant hand once stood.

Being a resident in the UK i will now never have a chance to see the Hall, i am a little bit gutted

I know how you feel Hudson -

My last trip to Dallas was in 1993 - and I only got to see Sandman HQ (from the road) and Dealy Plaza (Grassy Knoll)...

I was hoping to take another trip this year to see all this other stuff - but am amazed that the summer I plan to do it, it's all coming down... unreal.... :wallbash:

Frances 7 - April 22, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
Well at least you got to see it once Logan!

I was planning on taking the trip this fall but since the Great Hall was one of my main reasons to go I think my trip will be cancelled.
