Title: Were You Happy With the series casting?

I was just curious as to how others felt about the series casting. I thought Heather Menzies was fine as Jessica, but I wasn't a great fan of Gregory Harrison as Logan.
No offense to Mr. Harrison. I enjoyed him on Trapper John, MD, but wasn't thrilled with him as Logan.
Just my opinion.

Yes to your casting question - I thought all of the actors on the TV series were great, although it did take me awhile to get used to Gregory Harrison in the role of Logan, I must admit. Back when the show originally aired, I thought he was just way too stiff and serious. Thank God, William F. Nolan created the character REM to provide some much needed comic relief and I'm equally thankful that the show's director and producers chose the very talented and humorous Donald Moffat to play the android.
Gregory was very serious in the role of Logan and he really didn't start opening up to Jessica until the Haunted House episode "Night Visitors". It was in this episode that the two of them finally shared a memorable moment together :smooch: - a much needed romantic moment that was sadly missing in a majority of the other episodes.
Gregory's Logan took awhile with me, but after several episodes I had gotten used to his stoic Logan portrayal. What I always found funny was that Logan was way too smart to be taken in by the people they bumped into. No matter who they met, it was always Logan to say 'I just have a strange feeling about "so and so".' Logan was way too serious all the time. He needed to lighten up a bit for the TV show.
so back to your question --
Yes - I think the casting of the leads was fine. I think it may have been a directing and writing decision to make Logan so serious and stoic all the time. I just had always hoped for better emotional interactions between Logan and Jessica in the story lines, but sadly- there were hardly any written in the shows for Gregory and Heather to act upon. :dancing:
My favorite episodes with real Logan and Jessica interactions:
The Collectors
Night Visitors
btw MaryMary5, you'd better pick up an ankh quick! You're blinking....

Thanks Logan 5. I didn't get a chance to take Jessica's ankh, only her bracelet. ;)

I had a big crush on Heather Menzies "back then," & I thought she brought a lot of heart & energy & humor to Jessica. . .quite a different interpretation than Jenny Agutter's (which I found flawless), but -- it worked.
Kudos, too, to Randy Powell as Francis. He seemed quite plausible in every episode in which he appeared. You really believed that he believed in his mission.
Uh-oh -- now I'M blinking! Mary-Mary, can you show me the way to Sanctuary? :help:

I agree with heather - she was great - but I don't liked francis so much - he was far more plausible in the movie than in the TV series.
In the movie he was the betrait friend who even so he could see that all he was told was not true he simply don't want to believe this. But somehow you could see his inner conflict about this.
In the TV serie he know from the elders that all this was a lie but he swallowed all this without problems and still served them ...

It had been rumored by either the writers or the producers of the show (forget which), that Randy's Francis character (in later unwritten episodes) was going to turn good, and team up with Logan, Jessica and REM in later episodes - but because the show got cancelled, this was never to be.
It may have made for some interesting plot points and situations, rather than just having Francis keep tracking L and J all the time.
I did like Randy's portrayal of Francis, btw. And I agree, Heather was great on the show too!!

The serie ewas cancelled far to early anyway :( - some kind of development in Francis character would have been nice - so I would prefere a more complicated, somehow confused Francis then just a "turned good" one ;) ... at least I would be confused if I was him I guess ...

I personally loved the tv series casting, the tv actors made the characters their own. (I will admidt to seeing the show before the movie; sad but true) In particular I loved Gregory Harrison's Logan-5, there wasn't a S-F hero quite like him at the time. I took to him instantly. That's me.

I loved the whole cast, I thought they had far more chemistry than in the movie, this may sound bizzare but I always thought the tv show had a wizard of oz quality about it. Not just the obvious good on the run from evil, but I always saw jess as dorothy, wide eyed and sees the good in everyone, rem was so much like the scarecrow in all areas. I also thought the colours on the tv show seemed really bright just like in wizard of oz. My god I sound like such a geek!! Anyone know what I mean?

I agree with the Wizaed of Oz quality comment. In many of th episodes it does have that feel, also in the way it was filmed. I myself own the series and would like to see it release on DVD fully restored before it degrades beyond repair, and although the chemistry beween Gregory and Heather is excellent I think the performance of Jenny and Michael is absoluley perfect... :)
