Title: Guilty Pleasures: Inspired by Running Man & Logan
MaryMary5 - October 10, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
What Sci-Fi /Horror flicks do you enjoy - even if you know they are REALLY bad?
Here are a few of mine:
1. Night of the Comet (that's not a surprise)
2. Killer Klowns from Outer Space ( Great for a laugh)
3. Pitch Black (Potential is there, just a little stilted)
4. IT (I'm just a Tim Curry fan)
5. Mission to Mars
6. Red Planet
Anyone else care to add any? :)
Logan5 - October 10, 2005 03:41 PM (GMT)
Cool topic MaryMary5
Here are just a few of my favorite SciFi/Horror 'Guilty Pleasures'
Phantasm II
Liquid Sky
Looker
John Carpenter's The Fog
Sssssssssss - w/ Heather Menzies
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Eraserhead
Creepshow
Saturn 3
The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone in 3D
StarChaser: The Legend of Orin in 3D
I agree that "It" was a great movie! Tim Curry was excellent as Pennywise!! Love those scary clown movies!!
MaryMary5 - October 11, 2005 11:47 AM (GMT)
How could I have forgotten The Rocky Horror Picture Show? LOL I also wanted to add a couple of others:
-Legend
-The Dark Crystal
-Spacehunter:Adventures in the Forbidden Zone in 3-D (I had forgotten about this one.)
-Jaws 4 ( I really just get a kick out of watching which ending they choose to show.Sometimes Mario Van Peebles is thought to be dead. Other times they show how he survived.)
You have to love the late 70's and the 80's for these priceless gems.
The Running Man - October 12, 2005 03:01 PM (GMT)
Ok..here are some movies that I like but don't generally disclose in Public...
1.....Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
2.....Alien vs. Preditor...I love it , I own it on DVD
3.....Clash of the Titans
4.....Terminator 3
5.....Invaders from Mars.
6.....Mission to Mars.
MaryMary5 - October 13, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
Don't worry Running Man. We won't tell the Sandmen on you. ;)
Francis 8 - October 19, 2005 05:11 AM (GMT)
I'd have to say that my gulity pleasures are....
1. Night Of The Comet
2. Mission To Mars
3. Saturn 3
4. Starship Invasions
5. Buck Rogers - In The 25th Century (movie and 1st Season only)
Logan5 - October 20, 2005 06:00 PM (GMT)
Add me to the list for "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century"! Can't believe I forgot that one. Don't even get me started on Erin Gray! ;)

Two more SciFi guilty pleasures that I forgot to mention earlier....
"Damnation Alley" - 1977 - with Jan-Michael Vincent and George Peppard
and
"Phantasm" - 1979 - with Angus Scrimm and Reggie Bannister
Although many people call "Phantasm" a horror movie, The Tall Man actually originates from another dimension and steals the bodies of the dead from graveyards around the country to re-animate them and send them back to his home planet to use as slaves! Wow.... What a plot!!!
Also, looking back, "Damnation Alley" isn't one of the greatest films ever made - but to a 12-year-old kid who first saw it on the big screen back in 1977, it was super cool!! Especially with that awesome vehicle they traveled around in, the LandMaster!!!

It's those fond childhood memories that keep me coming back to these 'guilty pleasures' of mine.

Well, if TV shows are eligible, then I have four words for you:
Lynda Carter, WONDER WOMAN.
Logan5, do you have a photo of HER you could post?
At 14, watching Lynda, I felt certain, uh. . .feelings. . .that I hadn't quite felt before. . . :censored:
nems12 - October 20, 2005 09:50 PM (GMT)
Paulx,
Be sure to check out this thread...
Logan/Wonder Woman connections
Logan5 - October 21, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
and besides those in nems12's referenced thread
here's one more of the radiant Lynda Carter --
Paulx - October 21, 2005 06:00 AM (GMT)
nems12 -- thanks for the thread. Wild stuff...I seem to remember seeing WW trapped in that tube (wished I was in there WITH her, as I recall). And that really DOES look like Jessica's torn dress at the Con! Wonder if it's the real one, or a lovingly crafted facsimile?
Logan5 -- bless you. Great shot. Now THERE'S some stars & stripes one can't help but, uh...salute. ;)
Francis 8 - October 22, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
Speaking of Damnation Alley, does anybody know what happened to the Landmaster after production was completed on the 20th Century Fox film?
I have heard some rumors that it was bought by some people, repaired, and updated. That had to have been the most awesome looking landcraft in Science Fiction film history.
Lynda Carter is definately a hottie!!! She is still beautiful to this day! Erin Gray is still lovely, too. I actually met Erin back in 1979, at a science fiction convention held here in Louisville, Kentucky. She was helping promote the 1st Season of Buck Rogers at that time. What can I say? She was a goddess who could give Aphrodite a run for her money! :D

I've been watching VH1's all-new The 80's in 3D this week and was surprised to see Erin Gray as one of the guests reliving the 80s!! She made a funny remark about how hot Juice Newton was - and then went on to say how she (Erin that is) is straight! I think it was the Year 1982 episode. Watch for it this week! They've been re-airing some episodes they already showed.
Did you all know she was one of Sports Illustrated first models?

Steve, I did NOT know that -
and if that is indeed Erin Gray in the photo you posted -- Wow!! Do you know when that photo was taken of her - 1975- 1978? She'd have been around 26 or so, I guess. :wiggly:
Sorry for prolonging the off topic discussion... As moderator, I really should be watching out for this sort of thing. :lol2:

That is her, but even further back Logan.
1969! In that photo, she's 19 years old!
Picture taken by Ernst Hass in Puerto Rico, 1969. It appeared in the Jan 13, 1969 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
Paulx - October 28, 2005 06:34 AM (GMT)
Nice photo, Steve. Any OTHERS from that spread? I don't suppose there's one of the lovely Ms. Gray, uh. . .facing AWAY? (If you get my drift.)
(Same question to Logan5 vis-a-vis Wonder Woman.)
But, back to guilty-pleasure movies. One of the worst films ever released was also one of my absolute favorites back when I was too young to realize just how God-awful it was: DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN (Independent International, 1971). This was Lon Chaney Jr.'s last film. Lord knows, he deserved better. :(
Francis 8 - October 28, 2005 04:48 PM (GMT)
Erin Gray was 19 when that photo was shot? Wow! She is still hottie after all these years. I don't why she had to dye her hair blond for the 1st Season of Buck Rogers. She looks a lot better as a brunette. But, that's my opinion.
Anyway, on the subject of Guilty Pleasures, I will admit that I did enjoy the film Red Planet. That was mostly because of Terence Stamp, an actor whose work I've respected and followed since both Superman - The Movie and Superman II. I just wish that he(SPOILER ALERT) did not get killed off halfway into the picture. I would of rathered had him survive and hook up with the ever beautiful Carrie-Anne Moss in the end, than Val Kilmer or any of the other male leads. :guns:
The Running Man - October 30, 2005 12:29 AM (GMT)
Sorry...but I have to sound off ...even though we are way off topic...LOL..I did'nt think Buck Rogers would get this much conversation...perhaps we can move these comments to a new thread called OLD ACTORS / ACTRESSES THEN AND NOW..I'd just like to say these are fantastic pictures of Erin Grey and Linda Carter...I was so in luv with Erin when I was a kid watching the show.... :offtopic:
Logan5 - October 31, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
I think we all had crushes on Erin! Those SciFi casting directors certainly knew what was needed to keep their male target audiences coming back to the theaters!!
To this day, I've always remembered and enjoyed how the film "Buck Rogers" opens - during it's opening credits.
Move over James Bond -- :bump: -- here come the Buck Rogers' opening credits' girls!!
:offtopic:
"Westworld" is another great SciFi Guilty Pleasure of mine. Although not much in the way of beautiful babes, the story was terrific enough that I could over look that small mistake. See, you could still make a great SciFi film without bringing out the beautiful half-naked women... :lol2:
Also, another Michael Creighton film "Looker" is another one of my personal favorite guilty pleasures. Beautiful models get zapped with the super cool LOOKER gun (IMHO, the second best custom-made gun prop ever created for a movie - right up there next to the Logan's Run DS Blaster!) and end up temporarily SUSPENDED in time!!
the awesome looking LOOKER gun When they awaken, they are in such a dazed state that they end up accidently killing themselves! :eek2: It's soon discovered that these dead 'perfect' models are now appearing in new TV commercials and secretly emit subliminal 'Buy Me' messages to the unsuspecting viewer. The film features Albert Finney as the framed plastic surgeon who turns into instant private investigator and James Coburn as the evil television advertising mogul who uses these 'dead' computerized supermodels for his own mind-numbing commercials. Pass the popcorn!!!
Francis 8 - November 5, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
I definately remember that wonderful beginning of Buck Rogers. Those women were really hot and sexy! To quote what Wayne and Garth used to say, they were total babes!
Another underated classic from Michael Crichton that was really cool was the 1984 science fiction thriller, "Runaway" with Tom Selleck, Kirstie Alley, Cynthia Rhodes, and Gene Simmons. Another awesome looking weapon was the gun that Gene Simmons used in the film. The silver-metal one that shot heat-seeking microshells at various people. I'm surprised that no one has made a model of that to sell at science fiction conventions. I would rate that weapon as number 3 on the best weapons used in science fiction cinema. With the Logan's Run Sandman blaster as a definate number One, and the Looker gun at number 2. I would also rate Rick Deckard's gun from Blade Runner as a number 4, and RoboCop's machine pistol at a number 5. :guns:
The Running Man - November 5, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
Although I do like the Logans Run Gun the best I'm also kind of partial to the origial Star Wars Storn Trooper Blaster.

And heres another shot of it, I love the side mounted magazine.

You could deffinatly get ride of a lot of Rebel scum equiped with one of these...
Ron - November 5, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
i agree with your choices francis 8,but don't forget the blaster that the warriors used in the original battlestar galactica.what if there was a "rifle"version of the sandman blaster from the movie, can you imagine the power!

While reading your above post Ron, you made me think of another guilty pleasure of mine.....
"The Warriors" - 1979 starring Michael Beck
Best line (and should've made the AFI Top 100 Movie Lines of all time):
"Warriors, come out to plaaaaaaaaaayyyaaaaaa!!!!" :wiggly:
MaryMary5 - December 16, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
I had to add one more to my list - Maximum Overdrive.
Please don't throw tomatoes. I know it is not Oscar material, but you've got to love the Clown truck. LOL
The Running Man - December 16, 2005 10:46 PM (GMT)
WoW...Maximum Overdrive I have'nt seen that one in years. It stared Emilio Estevez, if I'm not mistaken...I wonder what ever happen to him...He used to be a huge star, he seems to have dissappeared, along with his brother Charlie. I never thought Charlie was much of an actor but Emilio was pretty good, I though... :) .
The Running Man - December 16, 2005 10:56 PM (GMT)
Argghhh....OMG !!! My Palm Crytal just turnned BLACK...That means I'd better be off Running or I'm DEAD. :o

Hey Logan -- Looker is on INHD2 this week! The movie hasn't been released on DVD yet, so this High Definition presentation should be awesome!
Looker - this Tues
Jan 10 at 10:00pm in Hi Def!!
Also, don't think it's been mentioned before here, but Looker features Ashley Cox as one of the models (Candy). For those of you who don't know - Ashley Cox is the young girl at the end of Logan's Run who goes up to the Old Man and touches his face as the city blows up in the background.
Ashley plays the Timid Girl in Logan's Run, as well as Candy in Looker! She was also featured in a Playboy spread back in the 70s! Three cheers for Ashley
Logan5 - January 10, 2006 09:04 PM (GMT)
Awesome Steve!
I will definately check it out tonight!
Thanks for the heads up!
Logan5 - March 2, 2006 01:41 PM (GMT)
Forgot about another Guilty Pleasure of mine - I just happened to catch it again a few nights ago on INHD2 and was pleasantly surprised at their High Definition presentation of this classic animated movie........
Heavy Metal (1981)
This was one of the first 'R' rated animated movies I had ever seen (another I enjoy watching over and over again is Ralph Bakshi's 'American Pop' - not SciFi, but guilty pleasure none the less).
But it was 'Heavy Metal' that started me on the road to Mature cartoons! The HiDef presentation of 'Heavy Metal' was terrific! I have the Heavy Metal laserdisc, and was always upset that during that Taarna bit at the end while she's taking her naked swim, the entire picture shakes back and forth throughout the entire scene. :angryfire: Thankfully, the version on INHD2 didn't shake at all. The colors were vibrant and clear (I even recognized many other 'shades' of color in this presentation I hadn't before)!!
What surprised me most about this Hi-Def 'Heavy Metal' experience was that a couple very quick shots (one in 'Den' and another in 'Taarna') were very out of focus. I wonder if this was a iflming blunder and was made all the more noticable due to the Hi-Def format.
So, I'm adding both "Heavy Metal" and "American Pop" to my list of Guilty Pleasures - as I had forgotten to mention them earlier. Both these films, interestingly enough, came out in 1981.
Heavy Metal - 1981

American Pop - 1981

Some of my guilty pleasures are
- 1. Phantom of the paradise
- 2. Flesh Gordon
- 3. Outland-one of connerys best films
- 4. Battle Beyond the Stars
- 5. Fantastic Planet
- 6. The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzi
- 7. Donnie Darko
- 8. Lexx
- 9. Just Imagine
- 10.Anything based on a H.G.Wells novel
Logan5 - March 3, 2006 09:20 PM (GMT)
"Paradise" was a great movie (I'm a big Brian De Palma fan)
"No one is to ever sing my music except for Felix!"
The Running Man - March 7, 2006 05:12 PM (GMT)
Donnie Darko is an excellent movie, very under rated. I think if they had changed the name of the film and marketed it better it would have been more of a commercial successful. As it is I believe it is a true hidden gem... :)

I just remembered another movie ZARDOZ
Logan5 - May 2, 2006 05:51 PM (GMT)

I guess that sort of falls in the Horror genre..... ;)

How could we forget.....
StephS - August 10, 2006 04:49 PM (GMT)
Ok, I'm new here, but I have a few guilty pleasures of my own. Here they are:
1. Battlefield Earth (so sue me, I like Travolta)
2. Moon 44 (I had the honor of meeting Dean Devlin at Starfest here in Denver when he was promoting Eight-Legged Freaks, so I brought this movie with me to get it autographed since Dean was one of the actors who appeared in it. When I gave it to him to sign, his reaction was "They actually put this on DVD?! Oh, man...")
3. Starship Troopers
4. Alien 3 (The movie sucked wind, but I'm a completist when it comes to franchises like Alien)
5. Alien Resurrection (see above)
6. AvP (see above, plus it also had Colin Salmon, and he's a hottie)
7. Sky High (superhero fluff, and nowhere near a contender for the Golden Globes, but cute)
8. Star Trek Generations (I still want to kick Brannon Braga's rear end for killing off Capt. Kirk in this one)
9. I Was A Teenage Werewolf
10. Mommie Dearest (campy, but fun)
