Title: The Alphabet Song
littlered - August 23, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
In Alan's alphabet song in season 2, A stands, apparently, for "appendectomy". A doctor at Alan's level should know that in the UK, the operation is called an "appendicectomy" - "appendectomy" is the American term.
And yes, I am a huge nerd. :)

hehe perhaps appendicectomy would ruin the flow of the song ;)
Our culture is very much mixing with America anyway. I have to use American spellings when I write essays (I don't, because I think it's ludicrous)

Do you? Because of Word or because your teachers ask you to? I refuse to use the z's and stuff that Word suggests, I'm English, American is derived from English, but it is definitely not the same language.

very well-spotted!!!! but then again Statham might have deliberately song it like that because he pretends hes a hotshot know-all doctor and yet hes a bit unsure of himself - does that make sense or should i shut up?

Because we're told to. We get marked down if we use English spellings...and I'm doing an English degree. *gets mad* I just refuse.
kittyofdoom - August 23, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
That is stupid, we're English, not American. We invented the bloody language. American is a lazier version.
poo on a plate - August 23, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
Exactly - it's bloody insane! I don't see why we should change our language at all. They changed it, for god sake.
littlered - August 23, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
So where do they make you do this?
poo on a plate - August 23, 2006 03:14 PM (GMT)
Every Uni is doing it apparently. Bloody insania!
littlered - August 23, 2006 03:16 PM (GMT)
Every uni? But this is England! Where we have English spelling! The world has gone insane.
poo on a plate - August 23, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)
The world has indeed gone insane. Don't worry, there are rebels like me fighting the system!

Maybe he did his Internship in the USA :D
Little_Simba - August 25, 2006 02:34 AM (GMT)
Ooh, I didn't know there was a difference between us and the US on that one but well-spotted! It isn't like Alan to suddenly go all American on us! The world has really gone insane if he goes American on us!
That is absolutely f*cking madness (Yes, madness - not craziness :P :P ) about insisting on American spellings in universities, particularly as it's an English degree you're doing, POAP! This is English the subject, right? You don't just mean a degree that's being taken in England? LOL.
I don't want to have too much of a rant but the way British English is being completely overtaken by American English drives me round the f*cking bend. Why, why, f*cking why???? What's wrong with being British? It's like we, over here, are ashamed if it these days. The USA has given us some good things but its language habits isn't one of them.
:bangh :bangh :bangh :bangh :bangh :swearing :swearing :swearing :swearing :swearing OK, rant over.
poo on a plate - August 25, 2006 09:31 AM (GMT)
Yeah English as in the subject. It's just ludicrous, I refuse to spell things the American way, I don't care if I lose marks, this is my god damn country!
Little_Simba - August 25, 2006 09:41 PM (GMT)
Good for you, POAP. You go, girl. I'd be the same.
poo on a plate - August 25, 2006 09:49 PM (GMT)
Cheers. My tutor got a bit annoyed with me when I started swearing under my breath though!
Little_Simba - August 26, 2006 10:31 PM (GMT)
[under breath] Well, f*ck him/her. :P :P

OMG- I think thats awful that u have to use american spelling!! Im with you- I would never do it!! Ever! Its incorrect, simple as that! They should either be insisting on the correct ENGLISH spelling, or saying they dont mind either way!
