Title: The Saga Of Alan Statham

enzotherhino - July 15, 2006 12:57 PM (GMT)
I've always wondered who Cathy was that Alan went to Crete with so I thought I'd do something a bit different for my first fanfiction.

Just sitting here in this camper van wearing a nurse’s uniform I wonder where my life went wrong. I try to forget the past but now it seems I have no future.

I hated school where everyone laughed at me, especially Simon Mason, just because I wasn’t into Spiderman and the Beatles. Beethoven will always be highly superior to all that noise. My superior intellect intimidated them and they had to resort to crude measures just to make themselves feel important. But I showed them. I was accepted by Cambridge to study medicine – they obviously appreciated my unique abilities. It was there that I met my darling Cathy.

She was a year younger than me and studying Classics. We met at an exhibition of Greek pottery and I won her over with my knowledge of Panathenaic Vases. She was the most exquisite person I had ever met and when I was around her I was so relaxed, she brought out qualities I never knew I had. I had never been so happy. We were married in 1976. Only close friends and relatives but it was a beautiful wedding. My darling Cathy looked divine in her white satin dress and lilies in her hair, her golden hair flowing down her back. Our honeymoon was in Crete and we spent an idyllic two weeks visiting Knossos, the Samaria Gorge and Byzantine churches. I returned to studying and everything was made so much easier by her presence.

My ambition was originally to become a surgeon and I did my first year of residency in surgery however the long hours and unpredictable shifts made me change my mind. Cathy was pregnant and I wanted to spend as much time with her as possibly. I am still a bit jealous of surgeons though - I’m sure I would have been better than them if I hadn’t gone into Radiology. When Cathy was eight months pregnant she was hit by a bloody dangerous motorbike and went into a coma. She lost the baby and never woke up. A year later she died. My whole world fell apart and I became a nervous wreck. I carried on in Radiology because that was what she would have wanted and became a consultant for her.

I thought I would never be happy again but gradually over time the pain became less and Cathy became a happy memory rather than a sea of pain. Then five years ago Joanna started work in the hospital. She looks a bit like Cathy now I come to think of it. She was lonely like me and had had her heart broken in the past – I could tell. We started seeing each other after years of me admiring her from afar. I thought she was out of my league but then we both got drunk at a Christmas party and it all went from there. And now it might all be ruined because of that bloody dwarf. Even if we do get out of here alive they’ll send me to prison. It’ll be like being back at school again with everyone laughing. As if the rest of my life hadn’t happened.

But I have left my mark on this world – Mr Boyce wouldn’t have become a doctor if it wasn’t for me. He’s about the age that my baby would have been if it hadn’t died. I may not have had my own child but I am proud of what Mr Boyce has achieved. He’ll go on to be a fine doctor – I hope he doesn’t forget me.

That was great! Welcome to the ficcing, enzotherhino, your writing style is brilliant! :D

Yeah, it was lovely to read an inner side of Alan and hear about his past. Poor man, I do feel sorry for him sometimes. I love the way you explained some of the stuff like why he has contempt for Mac. And to think he'd be a father too. Wonder what sort of a dad he'd make.

Trés cool enzotherhino, but also trés sad. I wondered about Cathy too, and also when he says 'we had a golden retriever that did exactly that', of course he could just be talking about his childhood but I never saw it that way.
