Title: Later That Night And Beyond
Description: Carrying on from S2, E8

Little_Simba - June 17, 2006 11:26 PM (GMT)
At the request of PigRescuer and Mac'sBestGirl, I'm posting my fan fic. I started writing this a few days ago and there's a fair bit so I'm not going to post it all at once but here's the first chunk to start you off.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own the Green Wing characters. This is a piece written solely for fun.

“I can’t believe they didn’t have any food on that sodding train,” Guy barked with a mouthful of chocolate gateau.
“Guy, you know they did. If you’d had a disguise, maybe you would have got served.” Caroline said before draining her wine glass again. “What did you do to get banned from the entire railway network’s buffet cars, anyway?”
Guy stopped chewing for a few seconds and Caroline thought she sensed a little discomfort in his mood.
“Nothing… much,” he blurted out defensively and continued chewing. “It wasn’t my fault she overreacted and called the cops and, anyway, that was months ago!”
Caroline decided it best not to probe as 1.she’s bound to have heard the sort of story and his side of it a hundred times before and 2.she realised she didn’t really care.
“Pass the wine, would you?” she asked.
“I’m not sure that’d be such a good idea,” Guy said slightly hesitantly, looking at the tipsy Caroline sitting opposite him. “We can take it up to the room with us and save it.”

Caroline was a little taken aback that Dr Secretan would have shown such concern. After all, why would he want her not to get drunk? She was sure he would have found it an advantage, rather than anything. She sat back in her chair and watched her new fiancé finish his enormous dessert. She felt very relaxed from the wine and, for the first time in ages, content. She couldn’t fully understand what it was about Guy. He’d obviously changed to a degree and yet there were so many aspects of him which remained as repelling as ever but, for some reason, they weren’t repelling her anymore.

Once Guy finished, he stood up, picked up his jacket from the back of his chair and offered a hand to Caroline. She took it, grabbed the wine bottle with her other hand and made her way to the door of the hotel restaurant with him. Hand in hand they looked the perfect couple. She was in a gorgeously suave dress and he, with a neatly tied tie and perfectly ironed shirt, looked very smart and sophisticated; it had to be said. A few people on nearby tables glanced in their direction as they passed them on their way to the door. Guy held the door open for his fiancée and she went through but, unfortunately, the step down from the restaurant to the hotel foyer completely slipped her mind and, instead of making the elegant exit that was expected, she went out with a topple and little squeal. Before her knees hit the ground, however, she felt herself being pulled straight back up with a helping hand on her elbow. She practically fell into Guy’s arms as he saved her from much bruising.

“You all right?”
“Er, yes, yes, sorry, I just, sort of, lost my balance,” Caroline answered him. “I’m not drunk! Not drunk, OK?”
“OK”
They stayed in the same position for a few moments, with Caroline safely enclosed in Guy’s arms, and stared into each other’s eyes for a little longer than they realised.
“Right,” Caroline said, standing herself up straight at last, “thank you, Dr Secretan.”
“Don’t mention it, Dr Todd.”
A thought suddenly struck Caroline. “No, no, no, no!” she said, “I’m going to be Dr Secretan too from now on.”
Guy smiled, “All right, Dr Secretan 2, now, I’m going to have to pop out quickly but I’ll see you in OUR room in a few minutes, OK? Room 209. You going to be all right getting there?”
“Well… yes, course but where are you going?”
Guy simply tapped the side of his nose and winked before pressing the button for the lift. The doors opened straight away and he started to lead her in.
“See you soon,” he whispered softly to her, his lips right up to her ear.
Caroline looked away to find the button for her floor but was instantly distracted by a pair of lips coming up to hers and just making contact. They felt like no other lips she’d ever known and she was instantly drawn into another world. Sliding her arms up his, her heartbeat rose and her tongue slipped into his mouth before she knew what it was doing. Guy took his left hand off her back to hold the doors as they tried to close on them until Caroline pulled away in something of a daze.
“Be quick,” she whispered as he stepped back and bumped into the group of people waiting to get into the lift. They both had an awful feeling those people had been waiting some considerable time.

When Caroline got to the room, she made for the window to properly take in the beautiful view. It was breathtaking! There were small, quaint-looking roads and side streets, green, green hills, a cliff top and a beautiful expanse of blue water. The sight coupled with the sound of seagulls and waves was enchanting. It was very calm with few people around but the serenity was somehow spoiled then by a noise that distracted Caroline and understandably so, in view of what it was. A large peace-shattering Ducati motorbike was being ridden past the hotel and there was no getting away from the thought it immediately placed in Caroline’s head.

Aw, sorry, everyone. I think Caroline and Mac probably should be together because they're probably better suited but ever since Guy changed and fell in love with Caro, I've been drawn to him. Secretan rules!

Glad you seemed to like what I posted so, as I doubt I'll get on here tomorrow, I thought I'd post the next instalment now in case anyone gets cross about the suspense. :P

She sat on the bed to ponder and couldn’t help herself taking a large number of swigs from the wine bottle that was conveniently close by. She wasn’t having second thoughts about that ‘yes’ she came out with to a certain anaesthetist at the train station; this evening had been the first time since she started her job at East Hampton hospital that she’d known herself be sure of something. So her dithering wasn’t about what to do but how to do it; how could she break the news to Mac? The minutes went by and, with no sign of Guy, she decided it was silly to put it off when she could get it over with. ‘Why would now be any worse a time than any other?’ she thought to herself.

She turned on her mobile and dialled Mac’s home number. She got the answer phone and hung up straight away because, well, how could she say what she had to say onto an answer phone? Caroline went straight onto dialling his mobile and could feel her heart beating faster and faster and her forehead sweating more and more with every ring, of which there were many. In the end, voicemail took over so she hung up again.

Seconds later, the door swung open and in walked ‘Dr Secretan 1’.
“How can you live in a place like this with people like those,” Guy ranted, pointing vaguely in the direction of the window, “and not understand what I’M saying? Jesus, you’d think I was from another planet the way they look at you when you speak normally!”
“Some of the Welsh just aren’t used to English accents, that’s all.”
“Well, when you usually get people going in saying ‘Ooh ar, I is liking a boxa orv plaaahstas, plez’…”
“What?” Caroline stopped him, bemused and confused by the record number of accents in one sentence (and none of them resembling a Welsh one).
Oblivious to Caroline’s interruption, however, Guy went on, “… how difficult can it be to understand ‘I’d like a packet of twelve ribbed, fluorescent condoms in a variety of flavours, please. Oh and your hair really suits you like that, even if it does make you look like an obese Margaret Thatcher.’?”
There was a pause and longer silence than Guy was expecting but Caroline eventually spoke.
“Is that what you went out for? I thought you would surely have brought some with you,” she said.
Guy threw his jacket across the room coolly and slumped down into the chair behind him. He looked at her for a moment and revealed, “I didn’t honestly think I’d use them.”

Caroline had another sip of the wine, hoping Guy would believe this was the first she’d had since she’d been in the room, and proceeded to fiddle awkwardly with her mobile ‘phone, looking back and forth between it and her intended, smiling just as awkwardly every time she caught his gaze. He, in turn, merely sat back and watched her.
“Have you… changed your mind?” he asked uncertainly.
Caroline immediately sprang up to put her mobile back in her bag, assuring him she hadn’t and meaning it but feeling she should be answering differently.

Guy took the bag from her and put it on the dressing table, then, taking her hand and kissing it, sat her down with him on the end of the bed. The inevitable kiss ensued; it was so tender, so warm and so gentle but growing in passion by the second. Caroline’s awareness of her surroundings vanished but she was just able to sense the hand that grabbed her boob… and the other one that grabbed the other. Before either hand could go any further, though, a familiar sound that was that bit too loud to go unnoticed started up, emanating from the dressing table.

“Leave it,” Guy ordered.
“But it might be someone.”
“It won’t be anyone.”
“That is just a tiny bit unlikely,” Caroline pointed out, starting to return to Earth.
Guy’s only response was to kiss her again and it had the precise effect he wanted, for Caroline wasn’t just happy to leave answering her ‘phone – she forgot it was even there! As the Nokia tone stopped, she got hold of his tie and undid it while he slowly slid his hand up her dress. Did he go a bit too far, though? When it reached a certain point, she jumped and backed away.

They didn’t make eye contact for a moment, as neither knew how to look at each other. Then, still without looking in his direction, Caroline went over to the dressing table and opened her bag. Guy watched her intently, feeling annoyance partly at her and partly at himself. Caroline’s ‘phone told her a voice message was waiting for her so she had an excuse to put things off for a minute.
“I’ve got a message so just, er, hang on or, er, do whatever, um, I’m just going to…”
While he waited, the only thing Guy could think of doing was carrying on what Caroline had started so he took his tie off and began unbuttoning his shirt.
“Who’s it from?” he enquired.

Actually, there was a bit more to my sentence there:

"Is it that obvious? *thinks* Oh, yeah, s'pose it is, innit? I love CaroMac but Guy does something to me these days...   "

...But not to worry because I couldn't write something without Mac too, now, could I? I am CarGuy mainly but I can't leave the strawberry blond one out completely.

Thanks SO much for all your lovely comments, everyone! :blush :hug I'm hoping to spend a lot of time on this forum tomorrow reading what I've yet to read but am a bit busy today so can't stay long just now. Looking forward to chatting to like-minded people more about the best programme on telly, though. B)

Oh and I'm a girl (well, woman), btw. Should really have said that in my introduction post, sorry.

Will post more fic in a min.

Here's the third instalment. I apologise to you CarMacs here but don't give up hope yet, is all I say.

Caroline listened as the message began. First there was nothing but silence; it didn’t last long but long enough. Then the caller begun their message and Caroline knew who it was before the first syllable had ended.
“Um…” Caroline had to answer Guy’s question. “It’s… Mac.”
“Oh, great,” was the sarcastic reply she got from him. “What does ginger bollocks want from you, then? ‘Cause whatever it is, he ain’t gonna get it.” A smarmy raise of the eyebrows finished off the message he conveyed and he undid his final shirt button.

How old Guy Secretan was that? Caroline realised maybe she had, after all, made yet another mistake that night. She couldn’t believe she’d trusted the bastard anaesthetist as far as she could throw him. All that love business he went on about was nothing but desperation for a f*ck and she knew it… or, at least she thought she did just then. And now Mac had rung her! Yes, Mac! That sudden decision she made at the station was wrong, oh so wrong! Well, it probably was… but the point was it was going to hurt Mac and that had to be the most important thing to avoid…

Not saying anything to Guy’s last comments, she listened to her beloved Mac’s voice and concentrated on what he had to say, although she’d missed the first bit as her head had been too caught up in the thoughts of her realisation. In the meantime, Guy occupied himself by hanging his jacket, shirt and tie on the hangers in the wardrobe. Not fully knowing she was actually unable to take her eyes of him, Caroline watched him as he did it and then he turned round and she saw his tattoo. It wasn’t the first time she’d seen it but it almost seemed like it as she’d forgotten about it. A cow was what it was – a Friesian cow – and he’d had it done for her. Admittedly, there was a little misunderstanding and it should really have been a flower but still, it was the thought that counted. How many people would actually have themselves tattooed with a cow unless it meant something seriously significant? ‘Aww,’ thought Caroline, ‘so sweet, so, so sweet.’

The message ended and Caroline brought the ‘phone down from her ear and stared at Guy. She stared and stared, her mind a battlefield of thoughts and emotions. Guy stared back, now starting to feel uncomfortable at being stared at. Caroline continued to stare, then closed her eyes, took a deep breath, opened them again, flung her mobile on the bed and jumped on Guy, showering him with kisses.
“I’m all yours,” she announced. “You’re the one I want and it’s OK because you’re the one I can have. Mac… well, oh, just never mind, kiss me like you did earlier!”
Guy was about to ask but thought he may as well obey that instruction first so, after a sixty second bit of passion and tongue-wrestling, he said “What do you mean? What did Mac say?”
“He’s OK with us – you and me; he said he wanted to tell me not to hold back for his sake.”
Guy didn’t know what to make of that – it didn’t seem right. Why would…? Why did…? Why should…? Just why? He reached for the mobile, knocking the now more than tipsy Caroline onto her back across the bed. He pressed 1 to listen to the message again…

“Hi… Hi, Caroline, it’s me. Me as in Mac. I just wanted to tell you to… forget about me, if you can. You and Guy – it’s cool, really it is. I know he and I have had our differences in the past but he’s not so bad deep down so I’m just ringing to say ‘follow your heart’ and go with what you want, Caroline. Life’s far, far too short to let other people get in the way. Go wild. I don’t and I won’t mind.”

Without saying a word, Guy turned off the mobile, put it on the dressing table and sat in the chair. He knew something was wrong; he knew Mac too well to not pick up on it, even if Caroline didn’t. He went completely silent, which is generally very much not Guy.

Nothing seemed to happen for five minutes so Caroline went over to him and sat at his feet.
“Guy,” she began, “it’s months and months since I last had sex… and I don’t want to wait any longer.”
She hesitated before doing it but decided to go for it; she knelt up and unzipped Guy’s trousers.
“Sorry, Caroline,” replied her thought-to-be lover, “I’m sorry but I think you might have to.”
He zipped himself straight back up and walked over to the window.

The confusion and frustration in Caroline’s head were about to reach boiling point and beyond. ‘What the f*ck?’ was ALL she could think. She stayed by the vacated chair and stared at Guy stare out of the window. Neither she nor he had ever known a silence quite like the one they were experiencing. In the end, Caroline knew she was going to have to ask.
“Have you… changed your mind?”
She got no response.

There was only one reason Caroline could think of to explain this and that was that now Mac had said he didn’t mind Guy’s getting it together with her, there was nothing for Guy to achieve over Mac. She saw it must all have been about that bloody rivalry between those two men and Guy can’t have ever actually have been interested in her. The reason he did it seemed to be solely to get one over on Dr McCartney. What a B-A-S-T-A-R-D!!!!

Caroline grabbed the nearest thing to her – a glass from the table – and threw it at Guy. Her aim wasn’t great due to the alcohol, however, so it only hit him on the bum but it still hurt enough to give her slight satisfaction.
“Ow! What was that for?!”
“You – no further explanation needed.”
Guy looked at her with one of those Guy looks.
“When I thought I could finally trust you and when I thought you’d finally changed, you reveal your true colours… your REALLY true colours,” she screamed to him.
“Yeah,” Guy agreed, a tiny hint of a proud smile creeping in.
Caroline stared speechlessly at him, then burst into tears.
