Title: Series 2 Performance
Description: strictly the character

I have to say, Martin hasn't been as fun to watch as before. He was never fantastic, but the plot with him trying to break up with Karen was rather annoying, especially since he kept losing his nerve. Thoughts?

I liked him in the first series, he played the hapless doctor very well :)

I just kind of tend to ignore him now

used to be fairly funnie, but has lost his charm now.

He was very aww lusting after Caroline but now his relationship with Karen seems to have gone straight to his head!

Didn't enjoy the bits with him trying to break up with Karen - they were just annoying and they are still the bits I tend to fast forward through.

I did like his yoyo bits in Episode 8 though - very cool, even if not slightly right

that yoyo bit was so so SO funnie!

''Open the fridge, rearrange the kitchen..... stroke the beaver, smell the witch, count the ants.''

i think martin's character completely changed - in series 1 he was this slightly-insightful, sweet friend of caroline's who had a crush on her.

in this one, he seemed a bit thick to be honest!!! like in that scene where the train was coming... with the hula hoop factory etc.

IMO - May 22, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
No he was a bit thick in series one as well. e.g. "Hello mum I'm in Zurich"

azuresoul - May 22, 2006 04:40 PM (GMT)
yeah but not to that degree... they just seemed to be picking on small character traits this series and amplifying them... such as mac's fear of committing in case he gets hurt etc...

before he would have just made really sure the person liked him, not done something like he did in ep8

i think its cos i didnt watch series one but i actually like martin a little!! he plays the innocent, thick doctor who is extremely bad at breaking up with girls very well!!! nah to be perfectly honest, he was never my fave character!!

azuresoul - May 22, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)
nah hes not mine either really - but i suppose that everyone's fave characters are gonna be the "bigger" ones...

I love Martin, I really do, but he isn't what I'd call a stand alone character. He's funnier when he's around the other characters, and its his interaction with them that makes him funny.

Just read that back and I don't think its come out right... let's try again...

The other main characters can all be either on their own in a scene, or with other non-main characters/extras and still be hilarious (I'm thinking Guy's community service, Sue alone in her office, Statham and his car park exploits... etc) but a lot of Martin's humour depends on his interaction with the others (eg. Mac discovering him sticky-taped to toilet door - yes I know I've mentioned it before but its one of my fav moments! - or his conversations with Sue in her office).

The only stand-alone Martin moment that had me really chuckling was his dream/nightmare dance exam, which was fantastic!

An excellant point, and I think you've hit the nail on the head. I don't think Martin can be funny on his own, most of what makes him funny are his reactions to other characters.

He does do good ones; I especially love the look on hs face when Guy' trying to teach him how to chat up women in "Caroline's First Day". I'm amazed at how wide his mouth can open.

xjessx - August 27, 2006 07:04 PM (GMT)
haha i know its hilarious lol i dont even think i can open my mouth that wide although i have been told that i have the biggest mouth ever when i yawn soo

i also love when he's trying to get into Guy's flat.

and the bit i never noticed until the commentaries pointed it out (being to engaged in wacthing Mac run across teh screen and Guy run aorund in his dressing gown) when Martin's in the back of the ambulance and lifting up his botoxed legs. i always find that hilarious!

'No that w****r lives upstairs' or something to that effect! I had, indeed, forgotten that scene until you just mentioned it P. Rescuer! Probably cos the next one with Martin and Guy is brill - 'SHE'S MY SMOO TOO!'

IMO - August 28, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
Agrees he had some brilliant bits in Series 1, the botoxed legs must be the best.

But he had some pretty lame storylines in the second series, I can't stand the prostitute storyline and the proposal to Caroline was a joke. Although I did like the "lets have an open relationship" bit with Karen.

But he isn't my favorite character by a long shot :o

have you ever noticed his face in the scene where sue pops up out the table in the restaurant?its the whole mouth wide open again?is very funny!

Little_Simba - September 11, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
Martin is such an underrated character, imho. Sorry but he is one of my faves. :blush I think Karl's got tremendous comic talent and the character has tremendous comic potential. However, he was a little disappointing in series 2 but that was entirely the writers, as far as I can see. They didn't seem to know what to do with him in series 2 and I thought that was a great shame. There are some v. funny series 2 Martin moments but, on the whole, it was sad to the character not really going anywhere.

Yes, I did, I just thought it looked stupid, sorry. The first time, with Guy and he's teaching him 'see you in Zurich', it was funny, but that second time it just was silly.

oh well.each to their own i guess
