Karl gets big acting break

September 24, 2004 23:23

A LOWESTOFT born actor is currently starring in a new Channel 4 comedy series which looks set to be a success.

Green Wing is set in a hospital, and Karl Theobald, now 35 and a former Denes High School pupil, plays Dr Martin Dear. It is his first big television break, those he has had minor roles, and appeared in television adverts.

His mother, Wendy Theobald, who lives at Holst Close in Lowestoft, said Green Wing was a situation comedy and the series was for nine programmes – this evening's at 9.30pm is the fourth.

He got the part through his agent and help from his girlfriend, and enjoyed filming it.

"It is his best break to date. His is one of the leading roles," she said. "He was always into drama, and it was what he wanted to do from the time he was 16. He spent two years at drama school in London, but it was tough to get through."

As a boy Karl used to attend the Hilary School of Dancing at Lowestoft, and appeared at shows with them at Sparrow's Nest and the Marina Theatre.

His television work has included being an extra in Chef, the Lenny Henry comedy show.

Green Wing has had some good reviews. Mrs Theobald said she was apprehensive when she saw the first one, but she said the second one was good, and she really enjoyed it. It is produced by the same team that produced Smack the Pony.

The series was filmed this year, and currently Karl is waiting for the phone to ring with more offers of work.

Aww bless!

Nope, I don't think he has yet, probably will in the future though, unless he goes back to writing that is. He's funny though, he does nervous, clumsy comedy quite well :)
