This Saturday 17 Feb at 2.30 pm.

In California, just after the Second World War, an elderly Englishman who once made a living as a Hollywood scriptwriter has taken in a younger version of the same species, who is also struggling to make his way in the new world. He once thought he was a poet, but now earns a living in a pet cemetery.

Preoccupied with dead things, he meets a young female embalmer and suddenly everything begins to go right. Evelyn Waugh's short satirical novel, sub-titled An Anglo-American Tragedy, about the funeral business in Los Angeles, the British expatriate community in Hollywood and the film industry, is adapted here by Joanthan Holloway.

Julian plays the part of Dennis Barlow.

It also says in the Radio Times:-

A fantastic bite of satire from Evelyn Waugh that takes the mick out of the American way of death, English ex-pats abroad, and Hollywood. The "loved one" is a euphemism in funeral-speak for a dead person, and also refers to Aimee, the delicious cosmetician who works at Whispering Glades funeral parlour, run by the gloriously misnamed Mr Joyboy (played with reptilian brio by Mark Gatiss). English poet Barlow (JRT) meets the naive Aimee while arranging the funeral of a fellow expat. What follows is an ugly tug-of-war over the girl by Barlow and Mr Joyboy. It's brilliantly played, immensely cynical and black-humoured, and utterly wonderful.

I only got to listen to the first few minutes, but I might go on the website to hear it properly. On Saturday morning, my dad felt the need to tell me about this play (it's nice that my parents understand the obsession) and I had to tell him that I'd known for quite a while.
